My offseason plan for the 2016 New England Patriots

In 2015 his cash intake went from $4 million to $1.75m with a chance to earn $750K back.
Proposing that cash intake go from $5,437,500 to $2,937,500 with a chance to earn $750K.
Pay cut is only $250,000 more than it was in 2015 while increasing cash intake from 2015.

Not so sure he'll look at that as a very good thing...

I don't really understand why you and others feel Hightower is worth more money than Jamie Collins. Collins is better than Hightower, and has a much higher ceiling.

I explained why earlier in the thread. I have flipped back and forth over who will get the better contract. One time I created the same deals for both. Like I said before I can understand the argument for Collins.

FYI -Why would the Patriots cut a player when it causes very little cap savings? Protect themselves from the possibility of the player who is probably not in their long-term plans from getting injured in offseason workout sessions, OTAs or training camp? Precedent-

Cameron Gordon LB 2015-05-18 Waived
Devin Gardner QB/WR 2015-05-18 Waived
Chimdi Chekwa CB 2015-05-18 Waived
Kyle Arrington CB 2015-05-11 Waived
Michael Buchanan DE 2015-05-07 Waived
Deontae Skinner LB 2015-05-05 Waived
Tyler Ott LS 2015-05-05 Waived
Alfonzo Dennard CB 2015-05-05 Waived

Doubt that he would. But once he agreed to a paycut in 2015 he had to think that being asked to take a paycut again in 2016 was likely. After all, if he agreed that he was not worth 4m in 2015 why would he think that he is worth more in 2016?

My mistake, I did not read every post in the thread. Thank you for the explanation.

Yes, Hightower's contract would be higher than Collins for the same number of years. That is because the patriots now have the rights to Collins for $1M for 2016.
I still do not think that is true, I think Collins is a significantly better player than Hightower. Collins was a 2nd team all pro this past season. Look at the stats, look at the tape, Hightower is a good player but Collins is one of the best and well-rounded LBs in the NFL.

Keep in mind in the past 2 seasons Collins has 205 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 9 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 3 interceptions, 9 pass defends, and 12 run stuffs.

OK, you don't think that Brown is worth $1.2M per year. You're entitled to that decision. That money is appropriate for our #4 or #5 CB. Depending on health, Brown could start or be the #5. That's well worth $1.2M plus incentives.
I think there are plenty of other options on the market to fill that position with more upside and less health concerns than Brown.

What do we think of our chances of keeping Butler for 2017? Are our chances that much better than Collins? Are we really ready to simply take a 1st for Butler next year? If not, I would think that we need to consider an extension.

Also, if we do extend Butler, we should probably be looking to acquire a vet FA, given that Ryan is also in his contract year.

Ah I see I didn't realize it was structured to go back up to 4m in 2016. Is that right?

If he plays in all 16 games, Amendola will receive $5.5 million. He has incentives that start off with 90 catches so I am doubting that he will earn them.

None were high picks though.

Because he had missed so much time his first two seasons, last season he was banged up but was able to play through most of it and showed how valuable he was. If the Patriots go too low he will get a better deal elsewhere and Brady can ill afford to lose valuable weapons.

jason mccourty will arrive.

Then again, Arrington's dead money (3.25 million) far exceeds Dobson's ($218,340).

No doubt about that. Belichick had really seem all he needs to see from Arrington he was exceptionally blunt when discussing him after his release and called him really streaky. I don't think he could stand the inconsistency.

For a perennial AFC Championship caliber roster, the Pats are in pretty good shape with the cap.
Compare them to the rest of the AFC East?
See this article, which lists the top five teams in the NFL facing 2016 salary cap challenges.
Sneak peek: Miami, Buffalo, and NJ Jets all make the list.

Suh - worth every penny of that $28.6mm cap hit. Miami listed at $163mm, with Olivier Vernon a free agent.

Lmao at the Jets cap issues. They had 50 million in space going into last off season and need to find relief a year later. Some things never change and the Jets incompetence is one of them.

3 of the to five teams listed as in trouble with the cap are in the AFCE, too funny.
