Should Pats extend Brady?

I am not sure how it could be any more cap friendly than it already is.

If they are re-doing it, it will add years but probably won't move the dollars down significantly.

I think at this point Tom values "not losing" above a few million, so I wouldn't put it past him to go even further with that. It's not like the organization is millions under the cap every year.

The ultimate FU to the league would be for Brady to play for the veteran minimum, free up 10M in cap space, go & sign the best free agents possible, and tell Goodell to F himself...of course, the players' union might have a big problem with Brady doing that....lets be honest, I think the guy could "afford" to play for free if he wanted to...

The union is an issue even if he wanted to play for free. But that being said I think his age at his position probably gives them a little bit of wiggle room to reduce his compensation over time (which they've already kind of done with the last deal...it was only $3M new money spread over 3 years if I recall) without anyone really being to raise an issue over it.

It would be interesting if this "extension", if it is going to happen, is announced as his "I'm going to retire a Patriot" contract!

Team never at any one point in the season had the OL they wanted to go with. Which was Solder-Kline-Stork-Wendell-Vollmer. People forget 3/5 of the OL that won the SB was gone after Week 4 this year. Connolly retired Wendell had some type of injury, Solder went out injured. And then you had Stork missing 7-8 games.

as for the 2nd one. no just no, the team doesn't need a deep threat, waste of money. It needs a guy that can have a season like LaFell did in '14, that's all.
Their O-line was ok last year but not great by any means. Yeah, they were good enough to give Brady a consistant 2 seconds to throw the ball but that's it. Connolly got by with his experience more than talent as did Wendell. They got abused by Bennett in the Super Bowl until he got tired in the 4th quarter. This team needs better protection overall. They also need better run blocking. The Pats need to at least be a legitimate threat to run in every game. There were Far too many games this year in which they entirely gave up on the run because they knew they could not get anything on the ground.

They also do need an outside threat. Top defenses can stack the middle and ignore whoever is outside. At least the 2014 version of Lafell

Hmm... Extend Brady and reduce his cap #'s even more to lock up Hightower and Collins (and maybe Butler)? Plus extra dough for a couple big signings, perhaps?

If they do, they'll probably want to draft a QB this year or next year since Jimmy G won't be sticking around. Do they trade him on the last year of his deal or do they just let him ride out the contract and then take the comp pick after he signs elsewhere? You've gotta think BOB would send us a second or third for him. I wonder if BB would re-sign Hoyer if that happened.

Does it really make sense to give a contract extension to a 38 year old QB?

Brady will be 39 next year. Id like to play this as safe as possible. You never know when the drop off year is coming and how big it will be when it happens.

If it looks like the last extension and adds very little new money but improve cap flexibility, then I don't see why not. His cap and bonus numbers have been/are pretty middle of the pack and I don't think either side is looking for an extension that would handcuff the team in any severe way going forward even if he did drop off in some major way. I mean if he sucks, he'll retire - his words, and I think he'll know when he sucks.

Not saying he should or would play for the minimum but WTF are the union to dictate how much someone wants to get paid? What are they gonna do?

The best an in the league should play for the minimal??

Yeah I am sure it is worth it to Tom to say "f. U. "... Keep twenty million...

SMH..

Everything is about revenge.. Martyr..

I certainly don't know the union by-laws in any substantial way but generally speaking it would be bad form for a player/member to set a precedent that could impede future earnings by other players/members (who may also want to win badly, but are not necessarily backed by the type of generational wealth Brady has accrued, even ignoring who his wife is). That said there aren't a lot of "comps" for the pay rate of 39 year old QBs in a league where expected salary often does decrease with pay, so maybe he can do whatever he wants.

I just want Brady to get #5 so badly. Winning number 4 was merely finally getting what was already owed. It was just making amends for the past. Now it's abut the future. Number 5 would be the capstone to the career of the Greatest of All Time, the final affirmation of his dominance. If he can get number 5 I will be content with literally anything that happens for the rest of the franchise's history. That's why I want us to extend Brady and go with him for as long as possible.

Brady is a member and supporter of the union, who happen to be footing the bill for his court case.
They cannot force him to do anything, but they can point out to him that doing something like this could give the league more leverage against players.

He said he has like 10 years left so I'm thinking at least like 8 year extension amirite?

Actually I think it is now 7-8 years. Said it in the same email back in '14 when he said Manning had 2 years which given what Manning said to BB, Brady pretty much called it before anyone did, definitely before Manning started to decline in '14.

I hear ya there, they have been supportive of him so I imagine he would want to return the favor. Good point.
