OT: Cam Newton & the race card

Perhaps not all, but I am sure there are quite a few who simply can't stand him primarily due to his race.

It may have been best to specify SOME then. The way he said it, it sounds like he thinks all of his haters are racists.

I'm looking forward to the day the league comes down on Newton for something, Jerry Richardson is standing there vouching for his player while Kraft is standing there with a noose, laughing

I love celebrations personally but I do rate them and dislike some, not that I want them to stop.
Rodgers Championship belt celebration was the lamest thing I've ever seen.

I'm a little put off by the superman antics in the end zone, but that doesn't really bother me that much--kind of like the belt thing by Rodgers. What bothers me is the first-down celebration. C'mon man, it's just a first down--happens about 20 times per game.

Cam Newton is the most exciting player right now in the NFL both on the field and off of it IMO. I will be rooting for the Panthers as I want Cam to win a SuperBowl. I love watching him play, I absolutely love the celebrations and I love the confidence and swag with which he plays. It's just so much fun to watch him play, plus seeing all the traditionalists who love the "humble & classy" superstar get upset will just make it that much sweeter if he does win. (As an aside the word "classy" should be banned from all sports discussions but that's a topic for another day). The "No Fun League" has tried to stop players from having personalities so I love that Cam has come out and shown all that swag all while being the best player in the league this season.
Swag is fine. It's the "I can do anything I want, and if you don't like it, tuff 5h!t" attitude. Such as being on the field running around waving that stupud towel when one of his defense make an int. Or wearing a hat and towel on his head during the Nation Anthem to name a few. I don't hate the guy. But I don't like the way he acts. Nobody cared when he was getting criticized when he wasn't winning. Now it's a big deal. If he wants to act like that, he's gotta deal with the criticics. It's just too much. If he doesn't like it, stop em'. ;). But just stop with the race crap. He looks like the racist here.

The one thing I definitely hate about the entire debate is that it's not a useful or substantial debate on any level - it's media-driven, they want quotes, they want stories, they want outrage across middle America! But it's boring. I'm a 35 year old white guy. There's lots of black football players and black people I don't like. There's even more white football players and white people I don't like. This whole thing was easy to see coming as soon as the Panthers made it to the Super Bowl - let's rehash the black QB debate, let's talk about why Cam is how he is and what it means, and what are the children supposed to do? First Tom Brady stole their hearts and deflated their balls and now they have to watch this fun-loving black guy play?

.....but I'm still disappointed that it already seems so pervasive. Talk about how he plays. Talk about his team. Talk about their scheme. Not this. That's all I have to say about that.

The days of whining about on the field celebrations and self promotion went out with the living wage. Everyone does it, deal with it.

Let's see. The first people to complain about Cam Newton's over the top celebration were Wesley Woodyard and Avery Williamson of the Titans.
Then came Brandon Marshall of the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets.
And NFL Hall of Famer Richard Dent voiced his displeasure too.
Those darn racists.

Everyone doesn't like it. Learn to deal with the complaints.

If it were Brady v Newton many would go Newton.
So it is Manning v Newton and many want the forehead ...
Such a load of crap talking on this issue.
So in other news I did not know Russell Wilson was white.
Newton is a jackass IMO ...I guess that makes me a klan idiot.

Personally I'm not a fan of Newton but it has nothing to do with race. Russell Wilson is a quarterback I really like. Wilson although a different type of QB reminds me of Brady. A guy who when he is celebratory it's usually showing his teammates appreciation or trying to fire them and crowd up.

For the most part I don't like guys with signature dances or celebrations. It makes me think of the Gastineau's and Merriman's of the world. Self-absorbed dinks. That said there is an element of liking it from your own players. Gronk's spikes are great and when he did the British Guard in London that was pretty awesome. I don't like Rodger's championship belt thing he does but I do like the Lambeau leap or when players jump into the first row in general. I'm sure people in cities with rivalries to the Pats think Gronk's celebrations are brash and dinkish.

The thing about Newton is he has about 4 different ones and then there's all the selfies on the sideline. He just fits into that TO, Hollywood Henderson type who's always trying to self promote and cares more about his image than anything else. I will grant his teammates do seem to like him which couldn't be said for many of the others I brought up.

But at the end of the day this has nothing to do with race and him pulling that card just helps add to racial tensions. If Edelman said people hate me because I'm a white wide receiver like Newton did with the black quarterback comments he would get scorned like there was no tomorrow.

If not for playing against Denver it would be really easy to root against the Panthers with Newton.
people bring up Edelman being a white wide receiver all the time and to think that at least some of the criticism of Newton doesnt come from him being black is naive. Black Qb's always seem to get called too showy and for some reason unless they never speak they get called self promoting, bad teamates and bad for the sport.
Wilson,
RGIII,
Kapernick,
meanwhile Rodgers called out his teammates back in december and people either praised him or didnt care.
Im sure you will find some reason to say that all of this is dumb and those criticisms are all justified but come on do you think Gronk would get lauded as the lovable goofball for all the stuff he does if he was black?

the funny thing, and also obnoxious, is that I've been hearing about cam nonstop + it's p much 99% simply about his race, rather than his football playing, and the irony is that it's usually initiated by, or involving a bunch of people who are supposedly above defining people by their skin color or 'race', whatever that means.

most of these same people caping for 'some black guy', which is how they view him, would be goofing on him all day erryday if he acted the same + was white.
I've been watching people hate on the GOAT for probably, like, 8 yrs now, and it's usually just us pats fans sticking up for him -- of course, most of those haters have legit reasons, like his wife is hotter than my wife, or he supposedly had some dude sneak off into a bathroom to let 1/3rd of a psi out of all the balls, etc.
I don't see all that many people caping for brady outside new england, and he's the GOAT -- but dare speak a word of criticism about cam the person and it must be racism....

I like the humble competitor who acts as such and don't like the guy who acts like an ass. Gastineau as white as bread. Race has zero to do with this.

Your comparison between Newton, whose worst crime is apparently a 2 second dance after scoring a touchdown and smiling a lot on the field, and Gastineau, who was a maniacal steroid freak and convicted wife-beater, speaks volumes.

I love Cam Newton and I love the white tears over Cam Newton even more.

yeah, this reminds me of another thing I should've mentioned --- there are absolutely a bunch of people who don't like cam 'cuz he's black, and for every one of those people there's another who like cam just 'cuz he's black.
