OT: Cam Newton & the race card

Hopefully we don't get any social warriors commenting on this! I find them so nauseating! :D

Cam is an incredible and gifted QB. Personally, I'm not a fan of his excessive celebrations mainly because he appears to love attention. I think it's very self-centered

A large component of the cam newton hate is that he is viewed as an arrogant black man who doesn't know his place, it also doesnt the help that he plays(and is dominating)the crown jewel white position in team sports of Quarterback. And we all know the history of black Qbs in the NFL and the negative stereotypes that come with it
I don't see him as a "black" arrogant man at all. That's the problem, Cam and yourself are assuming people think that. Where has anyone ever said anything even close to that? I think he's just arrogant. Brady is hated more than any QB. What his excuse?

Rooting for Carolina is really a 'pick your poison' situation for me. They are the lesser of two evils (mainly BECAUSE of Newton). But I just can't root for Manning under any circumstances, and so I'm forced to root for CAR. Otherwise, I agree, I find his celebratory BS obnoxious. And the ripping Packers/Seahawks flags pisses me off to no end.... imagine if Brady pulled **** like that....
Agree with the above
I'd add I'm not bothered about watching the game because of its total lack of humility on both sides.

He's annoying because he is annoying, not b/c he is black. Commentators buying that line of bull are either stupid or need ratings/clicks. He is really good at the game, though.

I want to root for Carolina, because I live here. But he makes it very hard. So does Norman. The arrogance is off the charts annoying. Nothing like the Patriots. More like the 1970s Raiders. The crap they pulled with Beckham was despicable.

I want both teams to lose.

What are you basing this on? People hated Mark Gastineau's idiotic celebrations, people hated Manziel's "money" celebration. How is that possible?

OTOH, I don't see anyone hating on Russel Wilson, who I find infinitely more likable than Cam. It might have something to do with how they conduct themselves, not their skin color.

Cam Newton is the most exciting player right now in the NFL both on the field and off of it IMO. I will be rooting for the Panthers as I want Cam to win a SuperBowl. I love watching him play, I absolutely love the celebrations and I love the confidence and swag with which he plays. It's just so much fun to watch him play, plus seeing all the traditionalists who love the "humble & classy" superstar get upset will just make it that much sweeter if he does win. (As an aside the word "classy" should be banned from all sports discussions but that's a topic for another day). The "No Fun League" has tried to stop players from having personalities so I love that Cam has come out and shown all that swag all while being the best player in the league this season.

Cam is a confused man. Some people dont like him not because he's black, its because of his antics.
If they're bothered by his antics, they need to get a life. Gronk has often done more than his spike. Cases in point are his pelvic dance and his Buckingham Palace Guard dance in the London game. It's all harmless. Who cares? It's like those who get offended when the Pats allegedly run up the score. Don't like it? Then, stop 'em. Non-issue, at least to me.

FWIW, I wouldn't mind seeing Kuechly, Olsen, and Allen get a ring. Got zero problems with these three guys.

The Superman gesture is obnoxious.... it screams "I'm the best ever, and this team is nothing without me".

Name one QB people don't hate. I can't think of any.

Cam is an enormously gifted athlete who has become an outstanding QB. He celebrates after he makes great plays. Good for him.

Sorry - I just don't see the problem here.

In the press conferences I've seen, he comes across as trying too hard to look and sound mature, while often really just misusing big words in superfluous sentences. Then I see how he acts on the field, with his sulky body language and pouty effort last year when they were losing and all I can think of is how fake this guy is.

And iirc, garbage time Supermans (when they were losing) was the tipping point to Cam hating for me.

I dislike Newton because I think he is smug, fake, and got paid to go to Auburn and got off without penalty.
I dislike Russel Wilson because his repeated references to religion (because God only likes the SeaHawks)
I dislike Mike Vick because I value life (both human and animal).
You know who I dislike the most?
Peyton Manning.

Does that make me a racist?

Overheard:
"I don't hate all black people. Some of my best friends are black"
"I don't just dislike arrogant black people: I also dislike plenty of arrogant white people."

Not overheard:
"Some of my best friends are arrogant black people."

Coincidence? Nope. Freaking racist.

Personally I'm not a fan of Newton but it has nothing to do with race. Russell Wilson is a quarterback I really like. Wilson although a different type of QB reminds me of Brady. A guy who when he is celebratory it's usually showing his teammates appreciation or trying to fire them and crowd up.

For the most part I don't like guys with signature dances or celebrations. It makes me think of the Gastineau's and Merriman's of the world. Self-absorbed dinks. That said there is an element of liking it from your own players. Gronk's spikes are great and when he did the British Guard in London that was pretty awesome. I don't like Rodger's championship belt thing he does but I do like the Lambeau leap or when players jump into the first row in general. I'm sure people in cities with rivalries to the Pats think Gronk's celebrations are brash and dinkish.

The thing about Newton is he has about 4 different ones and then there's all the selfies on the sideline. He just fits into that TO, Hollywood Henderson type who's always trying to self promote and cares more about his image than anything else. I will grant his teammates do seem to like him which couldn't be said for many of the others I brought up.

But at the end of the day this has nothing to do with race and him pulling that card just helps add to racial tensions. If Edelman said people hate me because I'm a white wide receiver like Newton did with the black quarterback comments he would get scorned like there was no tomorrow.

If not for playing against Denver it would be really easy to root against the Panthers with Newton.

tl;dr: You like the black guy that acts like a white guy but not the black guy that acts like a black guy
