Patriots 'part ways' with OL coach Dave DeGuglielmo

I mean, again, let's not get too revisionist here. He did a really good job last year. This year the line regressed, under very difficult circumstances. But I (would like to) think there are more reasons for his canning than just performance alone, certainly yesterday.

How much of last years performance was carry over from Dantes influence? Was the OL more or less on autopilot like when Jerry Jones fired Jimmy Johnson and put Barry Switzer in his place and still won a SB?

This season had players in the OL that have likely never met Dante.

Decent job in first year but the Patriots haven't been able to run consistently for 2 years (other than Dion Lewis' brilliance. Even when opposing D's have gone lighter in the box to counter the passing threat, the effectiveness was satisfactory.
That would make sense. Otherwise I feel like a bad game or two isn't enough to get a guy canned. Line actually looked great early in the season.

I could never spell his last name anyway.

I couldn't spell it or even say it for that matter. Hoping the new hire is a Smith or a Jones....

I can not remember the last time the Patriots fired a coach during the Belichick era.
That's true but a little misleading as the vast majority of our coaches come through the system so once they become position coaches (or coordinators), Belichick has had them to evaluate for years.

Good point. Never looked at it in that light.

The situation wasn't an easy one for Googs this year. Solder's injury, Stork was out for a while, Vollmer for a few games, no Conolly/Wendell who started for us last year. Lots of young kids.

Still he failed to right the ship or shore it up enough. It got worse as the season went along. I'm glad to hear that we are moving on.

OL looked fine when the unit was healthy and I sure as hell am not going to blame Gug for being saddled with Cannon. It'll be interesting to see who they replace him with.
This O-line has really only looked fine when Brady has been able to get rid of the ball in two seconds since Gugs got here.

Rex did fire him in 2013.

Not sure why Scar retired when he did. You'd think he would have ridden out Brady's career as they both owe so much to each other.

Guuugs by all accounts appeared to be "Too Nice a Guy". He appeared to stay loyal to guys that should have been beaten out by the more deserving player. Case in point the fact that after coming back from injury, Guugs stayed loyal to Stork when it was clear as day that Andrews was the better player. There was also not a lot of OLine shuffling done during the start and progression of the struggles. That has to come from the OLine Coach who seemed to be a little too nice and a little to loyal.

I know there are techniques and such but the bottom line is it doesn't take much brains to be an offensive lineman

It's not like there's a whole lot of plays these guys have to remember or routes to run. All they have to do is block the guy in front of them. Either they're good at it or they are not.

Players like cannon are not and no amount of coaching will ever change that.
Well we know you won't be the next coach, its a lot more complicated than that, they're plays, TE's chip a guy who takes him, who's got the blitzing LB etc,,

This is a bit disconcerting, and perhaps there is something behind the scenes we are not privy to. I can not remember the last time the Patriots fired a coach during the Belichick era.
Joel Collier 2008
Corwin Brown 2010
Are 2 I know parted way with

.

That's why I wonder if seeing Dave D on his own with raw talent to shape exposed him from last seasons success when Solder, Wendell and Conolly were all trained by Dante Scar.

Belichick had higher expectations and perhaps Googs just was not the coach who BB thought he was. True story, I worked with Googs's first cousin last year and a part of this year and I don't have crazy insider info but Ive heard enough to know that Googs wasnt really buying into 'Patriot Way'
