Ian,

It isn't about the loss, it's how they lost. I'm not a HoF coach and even I know you play up on the receivers to start the game. It's a no brainer. They weren't going up against Aaron Rodgers here. Even I know you put Chung on the best TE the opponent has. Instead, I have to watch them play 15 yards off the receivers and completion after completion. To a guy who hadn't thrown a TD in months. Only when they had 2 TDs they started playing D the "right way". Why is that? Wouldn't the first TD drive snap you out of it?

Offensively it was an embarrassment. They did nothing to solve/mitigate the rush. That is something any decent football team would do. It felt to me like they just flat out didn't want to win. I've never seen a Pats team perform that bad in a game of this magnitude. Bradys demeanor which was sullen and no energy from the start of the game was troublesome. This was the worst loss, even worse than the SB losses because of HOW they lost.

People feel it's easy to fix, and this isn't easy to fix. There is something wrong with how it all went down, something that's deeper than just bad plays. No one will ever find out the truth and that is disturbing as well.

Finally you can't change out your entire offensive line. They can't run block. They are going to learn how to run block in 8 months? Doubtful. I don't have faith in them paying for a big receiver, let alone draft one. I think people feel that it will all be fixed next year. You can't count ofn people who constantly year in and year out get injured and expect to beat the tough teams they have on the schedule. They went 3-5 to end the season, not exactly a wagon. All of those teams I listed have good Ds, and will now do the same thing Denver did until the Pats can stop it. Which they can't without massive offensive upgrades. The league has adapted.

The D will be phenomenal. Swag Roberts will be exciting to watch across from Butler. If by some miracle they get a proven grade A outside receiver, a grade A to B+ running back and shore up their line then I might feel better. Until that happens, people are just whistling past the graveyard.
Friend, there is much distorted thinking and uninformed conjecture in this post, from your assessment of Brady's "demeanor" to your notion they could flip a switch somehow to "solve/mitigate the rush" to their allegedly not wanting to win. You appear dismissive of context for this game, including the Patriots' dire injury situation and playing IN Denver vs. a very capable opponent. The truth is that the Patriots did what they could with what they had -- an exhausted, physically beat-up, undermanned squad that got by for several weeks on sheer grit and determination. Being in a position to tie the Broncos at the end was a remarkable testament to the Pats' mental toughness, which is something we all should celebrate. They'll be good again next year and will make whatever changes are needed to ensure that. Have some faith and chill.

Did you see Brady on the bench looking at the ground and Josh talking to him? He kept saying I know, I know. Kept repeating it after Josh would say something. So yes I'm spot on.

Edit: I believe the players wanted to win. The defensive gameplan early and the offensive gameplan is another thing.

Why does it seem that year after year we are in the top 10 in starter games lost to injury? And not only that, it seems like it's 'Key' players where we are in the top 5 for games lost to injury. I was thinking about this today, is this a fluke? Or do we need a new Strength and Conditioning coach with a new off season workout program?

Brady often sits on the bench looking at the ground collecting himself during games, win or lose. That's something you see all the time. Without knowing exactly what their conversation involved, you can't conclude anything from it. Brady was getting beaten to a pulp and still managed 310 yards toward keeping the Patriots alive 'til the final seconds. He performed with the heart of a champion in the face of huge adversity.

The ending of the year was them just being too banged up. "It is what it is", although I'm among those who feel they could have gone after Miami in that game, but I do understand what he was trying to accomplish. The bad news is it revealed what we already knew, they didn't have the personnel to run the ball or to push anyone around..

So, I hear you, but the biggest issue in the end was the lack of talent on the interior part of the offensive line, which was their Achilles that got them yesterday. It killed them in the running game and prevented them from being able to run effectively, and it killed them Sunday when Brady couldn't step up with all the outside pressure coming. When teams can get interior pressure and you can't get any type of push, it's a bad combination, especially when you've got pressure also coming from the outside. They have potential replacements on the roster and will certainly address it even further during the offseason. But that's an area that they can at least address and save for a couple of injuries that I feel affected that, yesterday could have played out differently.

I'm not denying that yesterday was frustrating, because it obviously was extremely frustrating and the fact that they blew a 21-7 4th quarter lead in Week 12 is still irritating given the fact this game could have at least been in Foxboro had they slammed the door on them when they had the chance that night. Instead, it was a sign of things to come and playing in Denver is just a bad place to be in January during the postseason

I remember some posters saying literally the exact same things as Viper after 2013 when we got beat by Denver and then they got destroyed by Seattle.

"Oh we have so many problems and its gonna take years to fix them all"

"Oh we are just not in the same class as the best NFC teams"

"Oh look at our schedule for next season, we are playing the NFC North and the AFC West next season, you can easily pencil in 4 loses right there. And then add at least 2 or 3 from a rapidly improving division. We might be on the outside looking in at the end of the day."

"Oh Bill never gets top talent in FA"

Seriously, they're the exact same talking points. How did all that work out?

They made massive changes. Lafell, Revis, Browner. The emergence of Hightower in '14.

I'm not yet smart on the FA linemen, but from what I've seen from some posters here Forte would be perfect and I tend to agree. So to do what they did in '14 they need to sign Alshon Jeffrey, Forte and a lineman or 2. Maybe a solid TE unless Derby is good to go. That would be the offensive equivalency of pumping up the D last year.

We shall see if they do that.

Obviously you may have seen the news, Bill clearly saw a problem:
