They Patriots remained steady and they did it without a $16 million cornerback salary on their books. How? We asked NFL Nation Patriots reporter Mike Reiss to provide insight:

"Revis helped transform their defense in 2014, and was everything they could have hoped for and more. So while they’ve transitioned nicely in 2015, that doesn’t diminish what Revis accomplished here. As for how the Patriots have maintained their defensive success without Revis, the answer is clear-cut and can be summed up in two words: Malcolm. Butler.

"The Patriots inserted the Super Bowl hero into Revis’ role at left cornerback from the first day of training camp and he’s been there since. Butler has arguably been the Patriots’ most consistent and reliable defender this season, as he played 1,082 of 1,095 defensive snaps on the season. The only times he came off the field were in games that were decided late in the fourth quarter, or in the goal-line package.

Jets won battle for Darrelle Revis, but did Patriots win the war?

(yes, this is an ESPN link, but I quoted the best part already so you don't have to sully yourself. Of course, I did have to click it to read it... but fortunately I live two blocks from St. Thomas church... so I'll go to confession later)

The Pats were right I think. Revis was good again this year and a borderline probowler but he lost just a little tiny bit as opposed to last year. You were hoping he would gain being 1 more year removed from his injury. Maybe he will bounce back more next year.

However as of this year the contract was bad. He is probably getting paid 4-5M more than his play dictates he should. That is the kind of money you pay if you expect him to play like Josh Normon (Panthers) played this year. Basically a shut down CB. He was not like that for the most part. Still top 10 but probably not top 5.

Please warn us that the link is a BSPN link. I try to avoid clicking on anything ASSPN related.

They needed to add that they used that additional cap space to beef up the front 7. That has helped out the secondary as well. But Butler and the rest of the secondary have really delivered this year.

If only we could get 3 Malcom Butlers at his current price :D.

Even when the Jets tamper and win, they still end up losing. It serves the AFCE nicely and while they had a heck of a season, I wonder (how much) the long term impact of having all that money locked up in a good player will hurt them (as Revis potentially declines in ability)

Butler's emergence allowed the Pats to put a cap-hit torpedo into the Jets hull by letting Woody get the best of them in TamperGate.

The best part of that was the fact that the Pats bowed out of the bidding a day earlier. Meanwhile, Mevis being true to form, went on "negotiating" with the Jets for mo money, and got it. He will be the most overpaid player in the NFL next year.

Revis is making the kind of money they pay for playmakers who make plays and win games. I don't follow the Jets more than the usual divisional rivalry stuff but apparently in both games against the Bills he didn't make the plays he should have.

Meh. If the price was something the Pats could swallow Revis would have been back. It wasn't so he left.

Turns out that their plan "B" (as in Butler) worked out great. Hes gonna be even better next year and Revis will continue to decline.

Interesting to look back 10 months or so and read reactions to the Revis departure...

A lot of this going on:

To be fair, anyone who said that MB would start at LCB and be somewhere in the ballpark of a #1 CB would've been called out for his or her pie-in-the-sky homerism. Things worked out pretty well, but it was hard to see how that'd be the case on the day Revis got paid to jump back.

This just in:

NFL to Award Comp Pick to Jets for Signing Darelle Revis

New York (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced today that rather than award the New England Patriots a 3rd-round draft pick as compensation for losing free agent cornerback Darelle Revis, he would instead award the pick to the New York Jets.

"In light of the fact that the Patriots defense was actually better in 2015 than in 2014, it would set a bad precedent to provide any additional compensation to them. On the other hand, the Jets have handicapped themselves by giving $39 million in guaranteed money to a player who is in decline and may not be able to help them win in the future. As a result, we think it is only fair that the compensatory pick be awarded to the Jets, rather than the Patriots. In addition, the Patriots have been warned that in the future, any transactions between the two teams must be "fair and equitable" for both sides. I have appointed Mike Kensil to review each of these transactions in the future to ensure that Patriots do not take unfair advantage of the New York Jets' ownership, front office, or coaching staff. This move is necessary to ensure competitive balance within the league."

Well, for those who did project Malcolm as a bona fide starter certainly pulled it out if their butt but with BB, Patricia, Boyer and the rest of the FO team had empirical data to use and were spot-on in their assessment and projection of Malcolm's ability and potential for growth and production.

I enjoyed going back and re-reading some of those comments. It was a lot more fun knowing that we're in the AFCCG once again. It's also nice to know that if we had overpaid for Mevis back then we might not have had the depth to overcome the loss of so many players this year. It worked out well for us.

Revis getting his ass handed to him by Sammy Watkins in the last game was very eye opening. Watkins is in his division and he'll have to face 2x every year. Revis is only going to keep trending down from here while guys like Watkins trends up. Not going to be pretty next year for Revis and Jets will be in last place. No way Fitz does any better than he did this year which in reality isn't that much to crow about.

This situation could not have played out better for patriot fans with Butler ascending and Revis declining.
Revis played solid for us and there was a question if he would be a top 5 corner again, he answered it this past season and it was a no.
