Schlereth: I would be shocked if Denver wins

The "playoffs" weren't close last year, the Ravens and Seahawks games were. The Colts game was a blowout. Every game has to be analyzed differently.

Any given Sunday, etc., but I think you're deluded if you're not confident going into this game.
Remember, you said the Patriots will ANNIHILATE Denver. I am hopeful but think the Patriots are underdogs as things stack up in this scenario. I guess that makes me at least partially "deluded." o_O

Look how close the playoffs were last year when Brady had all those weapons. Take three of them away this year. And an away game. And in Denver. And add in the clear animus of the NFL management against the Patriots organization. And the defense was even better last year too.

Oh, and I don't believe Edelman is 100% either.

Anyone who is confident going into this game is deluded.

Explain how any fan of the Pats can't be confident going into this game at the prospects of the team winning? It appears you do not feel they can win, right?

Stink is a hypocrite. I'm tired of the "Pats are the masters of pick plays"... especially coming from an ex-Bronco. Pats don't do it much compared to many teams, and the Broncos do it more than any other.

Yeah, I picked up on that too. Given THEIR schemes, it was pretty hypocritical.

Only thing more would be to claim the Pats cut block alot or cheat the salary cap.

There's lots of ways the Patriots could lose.

- A few key calls go against them.
- The OL gets obliterated by Denver's DL.
- The Pats can't stop the run and Denver runs all over them.
- The Pats commit totally to stopping the run and Manning hits a few big plays.
- Edelman's foot gets re-injured and he has to leave the game.
- A bad fumble, a tipped INT, a muffed punt....a bad turnover or two somewhere along the way.
- Pats drive a ton but can't punch it in and settle for FGs, and Denver gets a few TDs.
- Gronk gets taken out at the knees by Ward or one of their low-tackling DBs.
- The Pats' D gets tired from being on the field so much + lack of oxygen.

I mean, it's very, very possible that Denver wins on Sunday. They're at home. Crazy crowd. They're pretty good.

ivanvamp.... everything you list is sort of a "duh, of course" type of list of things that can go wrong and the Pats lose. I do not think anyone here is saying the Pats can't lose.

Well, I think you're wrong...as I'm sure you hope you are!

I typically wouldn't use the word "deluded" but thought it was sort of absurd for the other poster to use it for those who are confident here.

I'd rather they be picking against us... they're probably just riding Brady real hard so that they can immortalize Manning if he "does the impossible".. im sure they would all squirt in their pants if they got to talk about Manning winning SB 50

Plus when everyone picks against us, its easier for them to find bulletin board material

There's just something about facing that same team a second time, particularly after they beat you the first time, in football. And it usually works to the team that lost the first one's advantage.

The NEP were missing a lot of players, after riding a wave of appearing invincibility.

And this time, it's all on the line.

BB might not of had a blueprint for beating KC, but I believe he has one now...and the players to enact it. :D

The Pats would have to have an Eagles game like fiasco to lose. But at Denver is the place where I can see it. I think we win though. I want a three TD lead in the 4th.
I know that Eagles game is so far back in the rear view mirror but I still cant believe what a debacle that was.

That was one of the top 5 worst games in that stadium

curious what the top 4 would be
1. 2010 Jets Playoffs.. because of what was at stake and losing to them in that situation
2. 2009 Ravens Playoffs -awful
3. 2012 Ravens Playoffs -terrible mostly because Super Bowl right there
4.?

Yea those 3. Depends on what you want to define "worst" or "debacle" or a "fiasco" but some of the ones from memory....

2002 GB.....they wore those blue on blue uniforms and were lifeless. Patrick Pass fumbled when he pulled his hamstring. Pathetic

2005..Chargers. They got killed. That was the Brady, "you worry about your own team" rant to Schotsie. LOL

2006 Jets at home.U-G-L-Y loss to the rat. They lost to the Colts and DEN at home that year too. Brutal.

There may be others but those sucked eggs.

Hard to beat the Pats twice in a season. Manning will really have to turn back the clock to win this one. He's got the meds in Ashley's name to get himself to peak form. I wouldn't be shocked if Peyton throws for at least 250 and a couple scores.

Peyton doesn't need to be perfect because his team has great balance in other areas. Brady on the other hand needs to be close to perfect I think to win. He needs to play like he did against KC or even better. I have little faith in our pass rush or secondary to help Brady in this one---outside of a miracle play by Butler, when has the D ever come up big in 10 years to win a championship? I can't think of too many

I wouod be shocked if manning threw for a couple scores considering he has only thrown 1 td in denver ALL season.

Brady has thrown more tds in denver...

If Denver scores a TD early, we get stopped on the ensuing drive, and then they score again, I'll get worried. I think we can come back from multiple scores down, but that would throw us off our game, and allow them to start establishing the running game and make it a race against the clock.

the games "we're supposed to win" in the playoffs have always been the ones we lose. there are lots of good reasons why denver can win: they're at home, they have a strong defense, all week they're being told they have no shot. it's going to be tight, watch.

The Patriots have been favored in lots of playoff games that they've won. This is a far better situation than the January 2014 AFCC in Denver. The Patriots go in stronger and sharper. I agree with you that it will be tight. I don't see a blowout unless turnovers lead to early scores for one team or the other.

Schlereth is right about a couple of things. First, KC's defense is on a par with Denver's and Manning throws ducks.

That duck looks healthy and ready to fly to me. I would have gone with a wounded duck.
