I don't think the league commonly issues responses to such things, does it?

MAYBEWhy should the NFL comment? It's a legal hit. It probably shouldn't be, but that's a separate issue, and everyone knew the Broncos go after knees as a practice anyway. Given that it's legal, there's really nothing requiring intervention from the league here.
If the Pats want that behavior policed, they're going to have to do it themselves by warning the Broncos that for every cheap shot they take, they'll deliver two. If the Broncos know that targeting knees is going to turn into a war of attrition, leaving the winner too crippled to compete in the Super Bowl, maybe that'll stop them.

I really like him and one big reason why is that, unlike some of his colleagues around here, he isn't afraid to be fair and reasonable when it comes to the local team. There are a lot of them who are deathly afraid of being branded a "homer" so they don't take on the likes of Felger, Borges and Shank. I don't think Howe's intimidated by any of them. Speaking of Felger, I'm looking at him right now on Comcast. That beard and glittering silver front tooth really enhance his appearance.Nope. I generally like Howe, I think he's good at his job and is a good guy, but he seems to just be trying to manufacture a controversy here. I kinda got the sense he was doing the same last week by beating the "Gronk won't be anywhere near 100%" alarmist drum, but who really knows. All I can say is I haven't been super impressed with him these past couple weeks, which is a bummer because I usually like his work.
This is really a non-story. Tacklers quite often go for the knees, Brady mentioned it in the presser yesterday. When the running back gets a head of steam going, the tackler often launches himself like a missile right at the knees of the runner, forcing the runner to protect himself by lifting his feet off the ground, loses balance and falls to the ground. I think it's legal as long as they are approaching from the front.
Gronk has to learn to protect himself, which I noticed he has learned to do a little better this year, getting his upper body low when they come at him low, but he still needs to have more awareness around the approaching tackler and protecting himself by avoiding the big hit, even if it means sacrificing some yards and going down to avoid the impact.
