I'm sorry -- and this undoubtedly will offend the PC crowd -- but a woman coaching men in a men's professional sport that women never have played and likely never will play seems odd and unnecessary. Contrary to what Hollywood tries to tell us, the sexes are not automatically interchangeable in every human endeavor. Even my wife, who is as progressive as it gets, sees the NFL's token female referee for the cynical PR/marketing stunt it actually is. But if Wrecks believes a female coach will help his failing cause and bring attention to the Bills, then hop aboard the clown car lady!LaCanfora: "Very cool and overdue - Bills hire 1st full-time female NFL coach, Announce Kathryn Smith as Quality Control-Special Teams coach"
Im all for equality, but I draw the line with Football. Sorry, I just see this as a slippery slope. Soon we will se women kickers and punters.
FWIW I have always suspected strong flexible women would be better kickers than men but I would like this to remain a mens league.
If Rex hired her, we know she needs to toe the line.
Jokes aside, no reason women can't coach in the NFL.
Assuming she can actually coach I have zero issue with this. How many former players coach? Vrabel is one of the few that comes to mind. Mike singletary was one of the best LB's to ever play and bombed hilariously as a head coach. Yeah Bellichick played center in college but that was at a tiny division III school and he was never any good. Still the greatest coach that ever was. Playing and coaching are two VERY different skill sets and the only current patriot I could see having the chips to make the jump is Brady. So the fact that a woman has never played means squat if she understands concepts and can teach them.
Normally I really like your posts joker in that crazy old uncle you love anyway sort of way. Ok so the titans have a lot of people who played not one of those names I recognized. Being a star in the NFL does not mean you will be great at coaching. They are different skill sets and not everyone is cut out to do it. Do I think Kathryn Smith is destined to be the next great HC? Course not she has a major uphill battle to fight. Do I think most women are capable of coaching in the NFL hell no due to that uphill battle. All I was saying is the few woman who can should not be denied the opportunity because of their genitalia. In my mind it's like saying can women be marines? Most? Probably not but I bet there are 1000 or so that could and if they want to I say have at itOK,Mr. "We Are The World"...I wasn't going to reply to this ridiculous bunch of lies because I have no interest in arguing PC bullshyt but...let's take what YOU say and just pull an arbitrary NFL team out of thin air that no one even knows much about or cares about...NEVER MIND THE ONES WE DO THAT DESTROY YOUR PREMISE. Here's the staff of the Tenn Titans..

The NFL is overflowing with former players in the coaching ranks. Your post is ludicrous. Yes Mike Singletary was a bust. Tom Landry a bust? Bart Starr? **** Butkus?...aaahhh, why bother, you have your PC agenda to promote...go ahead, give a list of qualified women coaches you know about that can teach NFL linebackers, defensive backs and lineman "the proper techniques" from their wealth of experience..
I want the person best qualified at teaching my linebacker to be in the right position with the best technique to get that RB on the ground by any means necessary. Man woman it alien I could give a crap. At the end of the day the only thing I care about is my team winningThat is EXACTLY what I'm talking about..I KNEW you'd straw man this. Woman CAN do whatever they want just like men. Women can be marines, jet fighter pilots, UFC knockout artists, boxers, golfers...the entire spectrum.
Do I think, or just about any man these days, think that Rhonda Rousey could teach millions of men how to defend themselves? Of course. I'd sign up for that.
Read this about the FIRST woman to sign on to coach in the NFL.She made it all the way to the end of this preseason.
Jen Welter on what it means to be the NFL's first female coach | The MMQB with Peter King
Nice story...so what happened? I'll tell you what...at the end of the day who do YOU want coaching YOUR linebackers how to rip Tom Brady's head off...Joey Porter or Jen Welter? Seriously, you actually THINK you could sell this to an NFL fanbase?
Like I said, it's a nice "Billie Jean King breaks the tennis sex barrier!" story but at the end of the day what owners want is WINS and fannies in the seats. Empirical evidence shows this takes MEN teaching MEN how to play the game of football on the highest level. Ask women who love the NFL game, a number that has grown exponentially, if they want Jen Welter teaching THEIR team's defenders how to properly hit and tackle Adrian Petersen in the open field...from her wealth of experience.
I'm happy and I won't deny it, that Rex Ryan has made this move. It's going to generate clicks and ramp up interest by the media in the Buffalo area. It will sure help keep him and his massive ego in the news, if nothing else. The bottom line is he better do a better job coaching or the towel girl may just take his job in the end.
