OT - Arian Foster Expected to Be Released

This is a buyer's market and Lewis will be back healthy next year.

Among potential free agents, you have Matt Forte, Arian Foster, Chris Ivory, Doug Martin, Lamar Miller, Alfred Morris, James Starks, Ronnie Hillman, Stevan Ridley, LeGarrette Blount, and Bilal Powell. Marshawn Lynch will also probably be released, and may or may not retire.

Miller, Ivory, or Foster would be great as replacements for Blount. Miller's been severely misused in Miami but has performed well when they actually utilized him. I like James Starks a lot too, I think he's severely underrated and always performs well, though he's nearing 30 and will likely be a part-time player for the rest of his career and would probably be superfluous with Lewis and White on the roster.

Tons of quality RBs to be had.. the market will be saturated, so deals will definitely be had with that group..

Lynch would cost way too much, but I'd love him in a Dillon type roll on a 2 year deal
Forte would cost way too much
Foster will still probably get decent money from someone, hes outstanding when healthy

Ivory, Martin, Miller and Starks would all be nice additions that wouldn't cost a whole lot.. i guess the big question is do they think they can get similar talent from a mid round pick in the draft at a fraction of the price

If you're African-American, why would you name your son "Arian"?

Ivory gets hurt too much so no. Lynch would be okay and I think last years SB was his final straw in Seattle. Starks isn't much of an upgrade and Martin is most likely staying in Tampa. Foster is a ? mark.

I honestly don't know who is the best but I'd lean towards Lynch.

I'd rather bring back Ridley (26 and knows the system) and pair him with DL and White.
I loved ridley when he was here but he did not look very good in his limited playing time in Jersey

Still said the same way, though. I mean if my name was "Charley Mannson" you'd still say it the same way, right?
Yes

I assume the parents are clueless

I think Matte Forte would love Thu opportunity to play in New England and win rings may work. He still has plenty left and he would be the a great option.

has he indicated that he wants to take less money in order to win a ring?

Forte would be perfect for this offense.

Why not both? As usual, we're in a position of luxury as it pertains to the draft, and it's damn well time they took another RB anyway.

That shouldn't stop them from pursuing any one of these reasonably priced additions in FA just the same, especially when you consider the thought that they simply don't view Bolden as anything more than a ST player.

We can't run Lewis into the ground next season, and who knows if he could handle it anyway? That would allow the rookie to have a year in the system, which is what often happens, with something of an adequate backup to spell Lewis' carries.

do we all realize that Dion Lewis was averaging 5 yards a carry before he went down? do you remember how electric and explosive he was? he looked like the best back in a Patriots uniform since Corey Dillon for the first 6 weeks of the season. (i still get angry when i think about it, he would have made the patriots completely unstoppable).

im just praying that the acl doesnt change how he runs, because he was looking like someone whose role in the offense was going to explode, and id much rather have a healthy dion lewis than an aging arian foster.

I think the desire is to have another capable option to not only spell Lewis and take 40 percent of the carries, but also to have in terms of improved depth should Lewis get hurt again; after all he's torn ligaments in his leg, fractured his fibula, and shredded his knee. He's not exactly proven to be durable, and they'll likely need/want to manage him due to his history and small frame.

I highly doubt it would be anything like a Matt Forte or Arian Foster, but adding a middle tiered option and a draft pick would be a great step to avoiding another RB issue like this season. We need an improvement in depth and Lewis just isn't the kind of guy who's going to be a bell cow RB.

Thanks for listing some names. I would love miller or ivory but id think they'll both get big contracts. I'm most interested in Powell and Starks as underrated pickups. Powell is younger I believe and he's played on a poor offense. Can catch as well.

Ridley was solid but Blount was better except Blount is close to 30 and has a bad hip. Ridley should be a year removed from the ACL injury and can run up the middle. White and Lewis can do the rest. I don't mind him in the rotation.

Legarrette Blount never ran for 1263 yds and 12 TD in a season like Ridley did. I don't buy that Blount was ever "better".

Forte would be perfect for this offense.

Yup - and Belichick loves him.
The issue is how much is left in the tank and could the price be right.
I don't think Forte would balk at not having enough snaps -- I think he would probably relish not being pounded as much in the line as he was with the Bears and their terrible offensive line, and would love to be the reliable passing back for a team that has legitimate chances for a championship.

Paying big $ for an RB is almost never a recipe for success so BB never does it. I'd be shocked if we picked up a big name FA RB even though Forte would be a great fit.

"According to Spotrac, Forte is expected to be worth roughly a $7.4 million average annual salary in his next contract." (Matt Forte and Marshawn Lynch may be fighting for a contract)

I would like to amend my previous comment about Forte being an option "if the price is right."
Anything north of $5M (or $3M!) per year for a 30-year-old running back is simply not in Belichick's vocabulary (nor should it be).
Well that contract analysis from Sportrac is certainly skewed from the Murray and Peterson contracts...I don't think they're the comps for Forte (or Lynch) at this point. Peterson is a the only "franchise" RB in the league and Murray was a big reach and overpay by Chipper. The Gore contract is probably more in line with what Forte would see offered, especially in a pretty saturated FA RB market.

Of course you can never rule out a team overpaying to make a splash, offering more b/c they suck, or a guy just wanting to live in Florida or something. You're right it would never be north of $5M, I just don't think it'll have to be.

Legarrette Blount never ran for 1263 yds and 12 TD in a season like Ridley did. I don't buy that Blount was ever "better".
At the end of the 2013 season, when Josh McDaniels turned the offense into more of a power running offense, Blount was destroying everything. In a three game span he had 613 all purpose yards and 8 touchdowns. In three games. Not to mention that LeGarrette didn't have that whole "fumble at the absolutely worst possible time" trait like Ridley had.
