My recollection of Butler is that he got lost on 2nd/3rd moves a couple times (which is not new) and otherwise was just chasing a lot due to Smith running and keeping broken plays going. I didn't think he was bad at all, just not great.

Speaking of Smith just watching Nink and those guys chase him all day, I was exhausted. Smith can ball, underrated as all hell.

8. Andy Reid has to be the worst clock management coach EVER. BTW the Eagles SB and this game I don't think I've ever seen two worse scoring drives. They burnt almost 6 minutes and killed their chances.
.
I don't remember whether it was in Patriot Reign or elsewhere, the story is that the Pats were up 24-14 late in SB 39 and the Eagles went into their relaxed 6 minute drive and Belichick called up to the coaches to verify that the score was correct (Pats up by 10) because he couldn't believe the Eagles were so nonchalant and not rushing when they were down two scores... and they were playing as if they only needed one score to tie/lead.. Andy being Andy....
Being in Philly I got to see plenty of it. This is the guy who has a laundry list of time management errors...

Logan Ryan is who he is. He will get beat sometimes. But considering (1) O happy rules (2) CB2 (3) his improvement over last season (4) he will almost always guard the #1 option with help, I'm not sure how much more we can expect.

Chung has been nothing less than excellent. Cassel for him : brilliant. His play since his return to the team... key player.

Alex Smith man...I've always liked the guy, and thought SF made a mistake...

but wow, that guy might really be a top 10 QB in this game right now, im really not sure if i could name 10 others I thought would be better

seems like he has always been leashed due to perseptions, but next year KC just needs to let him air it out when needed...he obviously can

I was thoroughly impressed with the Pats strategy against him though. How many balls did he just simply chuck out of bounds for wasted downs? 5? 8?

For as well is he played in spurts yesterday, of equal measure he adopted Reid's inability to rally a team with urgency and took zero risks. Some of those throws, down two scores, you have to take a chance and throw not coverage - not Smith - just huck it out of bounds.

It was absolute deja vu last night. They were huddling up as the clock -- and the game -- slipped away. Huddling! And it's not like they had a rookie QB who couldn't be expected to make any calls.

Does Reid even have a hurry-up offense in his playbook?

I disagree the pats need to establish the run..last year's SB is all the proof we need. If Brady can keep getting the ball off in 2 seconds, all they need to do is "sprinkle" in some runs.

Is it Reid or Smith's fault. It really was mind boggling how inept their 2 minute drill was.

I still prefer to play Pittsburgh even with their high power offense. We match up well with them.

Brother, That's one of the main reasons I stay off this site, and especially any in-game threads, after the game starts. I'd like to think that it was simply a case of alcohol-fueled spewing, but I could easily be convinced that it's the result of anti-Patriot trolls showing up to hassle all the regular fans.

I love this site, but the mods really need to do something about all those freakin' game-day trolls and weeping Nancy boys that only show up on game day.

I'm no longer a Mod, but if you think the Mods (who are volunteers and fans of the New England Patriots) are going to miss the game so that lean over a keyboard and police the idiots in the gameday thread then......................;)

A better method would be for Ian to create a separate selective Gameday Forum based on reputation (Ian can set that standard), which I believe he did a few years ago, but no one ever goes there. I think it's worth another try.

"...weeping Nancy boys?!?" You talkin' to me?

I participate in the game day thread every now and again. I can't even get a little peeved at the trolls. So what. When I am watching the game, I save my anger for those 3rd and 13 conversions against defenses designed to stop the QB run. ;) I don't have time to waste on trolls. Let them play at the shallow end of the pool. We know who we are and who they are, lets be generous enough to share our greatness, and just ignore them We will all feel better about it in the end

Andy's presser last night was epic double talk.

The questions he was faced with regarding the time management he answered with delusional mumbo jumbo.

Andy.....dude.......everyone saw it. There is no way to "spin that" any other way than what we all saw.

If I were a Chiefs fan, I'd be even more pissed by his obliqueness last night.

By the end of the 2nd drive of the game I was a lot less worried about this game than I was before it started. Outside of the Maclin injury KC had everything going for it for this game. They had an 11 game win streak, playing a team with a lot of questions with injuries, who had lost 4 of its last 6 games, no running attack, and has looked horrible the last month and a half of the season. One team hot as a fire cracker, the other cold as ice. Even on the road you had to like their chances. You didn't have to be a hater to pick KC this week.

Well lets get started, and because we won lets start with all the negative stuff in honor of all the game day thread crazies. ;)

3. The running game or lack of it. Now I know that we didn't run the ball and it was mostly by design. It is just that some time over the next 2 games, we are going to need more of a running game than we've show the last 2 months, including last night. and when we DO finally make the run game part of the offense it will need to be more than just marching out there with 2 TE's and run the ball straight up the middle. I have a good feeling about Stephan Jackson.

8. Man, Malcom Brown is having a VERY good rookie year that is going mostly unnoticed. He is making far more of an impact as a rookie than Wilfolk and Warren did, in fact only Richard Seymour had a more important rookie year. Yet he rarely gets any mention from the media, or us for that matter.\

9. Patrick Chung is the freakin man. I remember hearing before the game that the Pats were holding TE's to the 2nd lowest yards per game of any team in the league ( I think ironically KC was #1) Well Travis Kelce came into the game off a 146 yd game vs Houston, and was held to just 26 yd on 6 catches. Baby Gronk was made to keep his diapers on, and Chung was a big part of it. The guy has been huge all year. He should have gotten more all pro talk. I guess he's still paying for the bad year with Philly and his last year with the Pats in his first go around. Whatever he and the Pats are doing this time around is working because he's been very good for the last 2 seasons.

Some general observations

10. Alex Smith's stats will seen as pretty average, and there will be more talk about the fact, "you can never win with Alex Smith". But the fact is that the ONLY reason KC was as close as they were was because of Smith. Some of his escapes, runs and throws in this game were remarkable. Its not like a lot of those 3rd down conversions were to wide open guys. A lot of those throw had to be perfect to be completed. He was clutch all game. I'm not sure you'd call him "elite", but the fact is there are about 20-25 teams in the league that would be better off having Alex Smith as their QB.

11. By and large I thought the refs did a good job of staying out of the way in this game. My biggest fear was that after they missed the PI in the end zone, they'd call a mickey mouse PI against us. They didn't. The call against Ryan was overt PI and had to be called. These guys did a much better job controlling the game without a ton of flags. Much better than the Packer/Az crew.

12. Denver or Pittsburgh? Well, I know it would be nice to be home, but I think the easiest road back to the Superbowl is through Peyton Manning. I watched our pass rush frustrated by the need to keep Smith in the pocket and not necessarily on his back. That won't be a factor against Manning. They would FINALLY get a chance to tee off and go after someone they KNOW will be there, when the get there. The Denver Defense is very good, but now I'm convinced that this offense is good enough to move the ball even against them. They didn't have much of a problem with it without Edelman in the last meeting until Gronk went down and the officials decided to play a role in deciding the game....and the muffed punt.

I just think they'd be an easier fit that Pittsburgh with a healthier Rothlessburger, and ABrown back playing along with the rest of their receiving corps. I know that playing at home would help. I know that the Steeler defense isn't nearly as good as the Denver D. But a great QB can always keep their team in a game and Pittsburgh is the only team with a great QB

13. That being said, it is much easier to run this kind of fast paced spread passing offense when you are at home and communications aren't an issue. They proved in Buffalo that that it CAN be done, but it is a lot harder.

14. Those who might be worried the league might suspend DA for his hit, shouldn't. If they suspended him, they'd have to also suspend Larry Fitzgerald for doing essentially the same thing in the Packer game, and we KNOW that isn't going to happen

15. How spoiled are we? How unreasonable have our expectations become? Well I couldn't help think about this when Devin McCourty came to the podium in the post game show. This is Devin's 6th straight time in the playoffs. It's his 5th straight AFCCG, including 2 superbowl appearances. Meanwhile his twin brother has been in the league a year longer and has never played in a single playoff game. That is why McCourty made a special point to point out how HARD it is to get to this point, and why they don't take it for granted...and shouldn't.

A nice post, once again.

RE#8: Malcolm Brown. I heartedly concur.

RE: #9: Chung's play.
I think this is an example of BB and Patricia's good coaching. BB likes to play Right and Left safeties and not Strong or Weak. He auditioned several trying to find Safeties that could do both and seemingly failed.

Chung and Wilson are capable Strong Safeties and are at a loss when trying to play FS. Meanwhile McCourty is too small to play SS, but he and Harmon are fine FS.

BB seldom asks players to do the things that they are incapable of doing. That is why he can find late round draftees or UDFAs who do one thing well, and succeed with them, just asking them to do the things they are accomplished with doing. He just abandoned his preferred idea for Left and Right Safeties; and is now asking them to play FS and SS, which they are more adept at doing.

RE #3: The Running Game.
We don't have one and with the lack of talent currently at the position, won't have one this season. BB will try to run somewhat with Jackson and White, but they are a far cry from Blount and Lewis. None of whom reminds me of Adrian Peterson.

The rookie Offensive line along with injuries to the Tackle position, doesn't help, and they won't achieve the consistency needed this season either. Any other team would be fatally done, but Brady is a master of the short passing game which is in many respects the equivalent of the running game.

Great post as usual Ken. I always look forward to your after game comments.

I must admit, this game had me worried but all the tension and anxiety left during the first drive. Our offense was back. I wasn't worried about the defense and thought they would have a good game. I must say that once we started losing our starting LB's the anxiety level kicked up a notch or two.

Having Volmer back was huge in solidifying the OL and Edelman made everything click like usual.

The broadcast team was bad, I can't believe that's the best the network has.

I thought our game was much better officiated then the Arizona vs Green Bay game. I liked the lets just let them play and not call a bunch of ticky tacky penalties. There was alot of players appealing for penalties last night and the officials just ignored the majority of them.

Alex Smith is a darn good QB but either he is not smart enough to run a hurry-up offense or Reid is just that bad at clock management.

As much as I enjoyed the game, I found the GB vs Ari more entertaining. I'm glad that as a fan I didn't have to endure what GB and Ari fans had to endure.

Gronk was a beast. He had a slight limp and they limited how much they used him but still one of the best players on the field even though he was clearly not at his best.

Funny. While the game was a caught tipped pass away from being tied, I never felt like the Pats weren't in control. I was watching with my wife so I never looked-in at the gameday thread, but I'm surprised that people found that much to complain about.

How about we get PFK on the list of Patsfans article writers?

I know i'd read regularly.

If we were tight for space we could always get Bob George to do the right thing. ;)

Trying to convince myself that neither Alex Smith nor Donovan McNabb was capable of forgoing a huddle for even a handful of plays. Trying...trying...

7. The drive after the Patriots held KC on downs and NE went 3 and out I simply wanted to slap McDaniels. You hit JE for 6 setting up 2nd and 4. Why not run the ball at least once their to run some clock? WTF? They made it so much harder on themselves than it had to be.

I agree. While I defended some of the gameplans and ideas of the last few games that situation left me scratching my head. Either throw high probability passes (screens, blah) or call a run play at that point of a game. Time is more valuable than a FG or another TD.

My god were they lucky on the ricochet catch by DA. That had pick 6 tie game written all over it. The Pats live and die with plays like that but I still would have liked a draw or swing pass to White.

Another bingo. A lot of people here are glossing over those 2-3 situations where we could have turned the ball (and maybe game) over. Game of inches..
