Damn, what is it with cancer in 2016? Wish him the best!
Dan Haggerty AKA "Grizzly Adams" passed away this morning from cancer. He was 74.

Wish him and his family well. I had a good friend that passed last year after being diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer. He lived 3 months. He never smoked or used any tobacco products. Prior to the diagnosis, he was very active. we went running everyday up til about 2 years ago.
Based on what Deus posted earlier in the thread Mort has a 30-50% chance of beating it.

There better not be one negative comment in this entire thread.

You've got absolutely nothing to say about what others say.

And acting like the Morality Police doesn't change that.

This Thread is about Mortensen, not you.

Compensate elsewhere, please.

Throat cancer can also be due to reflux and that is very prevalent in the U.S. Our neighbor was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer three years ago and didn't smoke either. He is miraculously cancer free and doing well so we can hope Mort has a similar recovery.

I feel bad for the guy.
The negative effects of his false information and possible dishonest reporting will persist well beyond his life or most of the lives of his family. It would be nice if he set the record straight while he is still able.
Good luck, Mr. Mortensen.

I echo the comments of posters here that wish him the very best and strength it will take to beat this god awful disease.

Hoping for the best but unfortunately at Stage 4 the survival rate is only about 25%

Overall, the 5 year survival for T4 laryngeal cancers may be much lower, at about 25 in 100 people

I hope he recovers. Hated what he did with deflategate but this is sad news

Well it's the classic bad thing happening to a bad person dilemma. I'll save my sympathy for the good people who have bad things happening to them. Lord knows there's more than enough of that and I only have so much "sympathy capital."

25% isn't great, but it's not hopeless. It's basically winning two coin flips in a row. Wishing him the best.

When I read of a high profile guy like this being diagnosed with an advanced stage cancer or any illness, I wonder what kind of medical care he was receiving over the years.

For all of you out there, if you have acid reflux (and, if you have it, you know you have it) and are downing Tums or some other OTC antacid like it's going out of style, get your sorry butts to a good GI doctor, get an endoscopy and take it from there.

Believe me, I know from my own experience. I had an endoscopy about 15 years ago, which my doctor asked me to get on what he called a "hunch," after I told him I had acid reflux and was taking a lot of Tums. The test showed early signs of damage (but nothing even close to malignant yet). He put me on medication, the damage was reversed in about a year and I get an endoscopy every three years just to be sure.

Do it!

I opened this thread expecting the worst, but got the best. I like most of us will never forgive him for his part in the Brady smear. But I wish him well in his fight against cancer. I want him at 100% when he goes to testify and be deposed in Brady's defamation suit (I hope).

BTW- At least to this part of the thread, we have proven to be a pretty classy group of fans. Happy to be one of you
IMO, anyone whose seen the sheer brutality of what cancer can do would never wish such a thing on anyone. On kind of a weird tangential note, the common internet terminology of drinking and tastings someone's tears confounds me. Most anyone whose actually tasted someone's tears was probably consoling another through some tragic or excruciating experience. There are few things I can think of that are more intimate and less appropriate to the intended meaning.

Even though I hated his comments on deflate gate I'm praying for him to get well soon.

Very evil deal...my dad had the same...didnt make it, very tough to fight and if it goes to surgery the outcome isnt good at all. I dont wish this on anyone, hope he does well. After watching what happened to my Dad, a strong man, I worry about this happening to me.

I dont know where the numbers are coming from but when my dad was at 4 we were clearly told the chances are very slim, once surgery occurred to replace the esophagus the chances get even slimmer. I know it didnt work for us.

Patients with stage IV esophageal cancer have metastatic cancer that has spread to distant sites.

How is cancer of the esophagus staged?

Very well said and for those of us that have experienced this through the sad tears of friends or family, the saying really annoys me. It is often said by people who have no compassion, which is terrible as it is one of the strongest human traits...it is often passed off as a joke but in the end it says the most about the content of the posters character...

That's sad news. Stage 4 is an ominous diagnosis. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. :( My hope is that he finds a way to beat the odds.

There are different types of reflux-Some with atypical symptoms like mine. Just had an endoscopy-Thankfully, no damage here. Totally agree with what you said.
