Evil disease. Get well soon.

I know that he's persona non grata around here, but he has stage 4 throat cancer.

He'll be stepping down from his work to deal with it.

"More than a week ago, I was diagnosed with a Stage IV throat cancer," Mortensen said in a statement Friday. "My focus shifted significantly to gathering information about the specifics of this cancer. The initial diagnosis was confirmed Friday and there is another test remaining that will determine the best possible treatment plan that will commence in the very immediate future.

"Consequently, with the support and encouragement from ESPN president John Skipper and many others at ESPN, I am temporarily stepping away from my normal NFL coverage duties to better engage this opportunity to fight the good fight that is projected to affect almost 1.7 million Americans with new cases in 2016.

ESPN's Mortensen on hiatus for cancer treatment

Here's hoping for a recovery. I feel for him and his family.

I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy. Hope he recovers. That said, I expect a LOT of tasteless replies to this bad boy.

stage 4 means it has spread beyond the throat...not good

I don't wish that on anybody. Best wishes to him and his family. Hope he recovers.

Reactions: eom
Heard people who watch ESPN say he's seemed off while on camera since last year. Makes sense. **** cancer. Wish him the best.

The treatment for this is not pleasant and I don't think the survival rates are very good even with treatment.
Even though it's a matter of the public record that he was primarily responsible for starting and exacerbating the Patriots Deflategate problems, I do believe that it's bad karma to say mean spirited things about the misfortune of another, so I'll just wish him and his family well.

Good luck, Mort. Kick this thing's ass then we can resume disliking you.

Terrible news. My personal feelings regarding him don't matter when dealing with something like. Hope he recovers .

Damn, what is it with cancer in 2016? Wish him the best!

Best wishes to Mort

There better not be one negative comment in this entire thread.

There has not been. And that's as it should be.

Prayers to Mort.

Someday humanity will conquer all strains of this horrible disease. It cannot come soon enough.

Just heard it, horrible. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, God Bless him & his.
