Somehow THIS Doesn't Cheer Me Up Any

Here's a video where Watson talks about the play.

I don't think any single angle gives definitive proof, but when you look at the multiple angles, it had to have been a touchback. When you see where the ball comes out of his hand and the direction it travelled, it went through the endzone.

This play bothered me right up until Malcolm Butler's interception.

Here's a quote from Watson about the play (not in that video).

MIT professors have reportedly proved that Champ Bailey's fumble against the Patriots in the AFC playoffs was a touchback.
"I've talked to guys who have talked to physics professors at Harvard and MIT and they've done studies on the play -- about the projection of the ball and everything -- and said there is no way it couldn't have gone through the end zone," Watson said about the play. "But if I was in the same spot, I would have made the same call."

Why are you so sad?

yeah...sad??? I'm STILL pissed off!

NFL—the multi-billion dollar company that preaches about integrity of the game and getting things right—somehow can't afford pylon or goal line cameras. It's truly laughable.

Perhaps BB should tell everyone how he thinks it is a bad and stupid idea, and the NFL will then install them..

Have you been SLEEPING all week long?
Look at you cherry picking the comments. :p The part you quoted was a Belichickism and suppose to be a non-commital comment.

The part that suppose to cheer you up is we'll get to watch some Patriot football soon.

I have always loved Watson and am glad he is still playing. For me, without question, that is the best defensive play by an offensive player in NFL history! Watching that replay still gives me chills!

The irony is just how awful that play was for the Pats! Probably one of Brady's worst ever!

In no order the 5 worse losses in franchise history.
Loss in SB 42
Loss in SB 46
loss to Colts AFCCG
Oakland game Ben Dreith
Loss to Denver 2005 playoffs

The Denver game cost them the opportunity to continue to chase winning 3 SB's in a row which no team has ever done.

What made that 2005 Denver playoff loss worse and uglier was the fight on the sidelines between McGinest and Izzo.

It was such an uncharacteristic moment. Seeing that worsened the sick feeling in my stomach.

The good news is we are on our way again!! ;)

Was that the same game, Deb, or are you thinking of the 2006 AFCCG loss at Indy?

In that game, Ellis Hobbs was incorrectly penalized for face guarding on a good play. As we know, the NFL issued a formal apology a few days after the game.

It's possible that it occurred in both.
My bad. I was thinking of ANOTHER bad PI call, one on Asante Samuel, that came on a 40 yard pass into the EZ and put the ball on the one yard line, but it wasn't the face guarding call which you are right, came in Indy. Incredible how much NFL officials screw things up. We remember the plays going against the Pats, however, other teams aren't immune..

On this video, if you pause it on the replay (not the first view) just as Watson hits him (at around 1:11, just as Bailey is starting to fall OB, but while he is still in the field of play), the ball is clearly over the pylon, has broken the plane of the goal line and is in the end zone's "air space."

I remember that play as though it were yesterday.

You don't even have to do projections and trajectories. Just pausing the video shows that the ball has broken the plane of the goal line while Bailey is still in bounds.

That was one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen. It would have been truly epic had that been a touchback.

It was a touchback but it wasn't called that way. I bet Kraft fought tooth and nail to get cameras installed since, right along with Belichick.

I have to put the playoff loss to the Jets in the top five somewhere, just because it's the Jets.

The Pats had the talent and the team to make a run at winning three SB's in a row. Denver was always a tough place for them to play in those days, as it is today. That game cost them a chance to do something no team has ever done. That play cost them that game.

"Sad" isn't the right word and "Mad" sounds obsessive. "Pissed off" is probably about right.

Maybe because, unlike you, many of us were Pats fans back then and it still stings?

Hell, I'm still pissed off at Ben Dreith.
you know what f.u.c.k off. Ive been a pats fan since I was 7 and questioning my commitment to a team because i'm not crying over a call from the 05 championship game just makes you an a.s.s.hat.

Wow, that's salty.
Rough day at juvy, kid? :p
