This league is absolutely despicable and nothing they do surprise me anymore. I say "they" because its 32 owners whom I'm referring to, including the Krafts. Whether its trying shaft cheerleaders in to minimum wage pay, railroading this generations greatest player with phony, trumped up charges, or abandoning whole fan bases in pursuit of more money, these people will stop at nothing to grab an extra dollar.

I love my team but I hate the league and everything it does and represents.

If they bought it for a million they could put in on a DVD and it would more than pay for itself just from Packers fans buying. Honestly I'm surprised the Packers themselves wouldn't just buy it and sell it themselves although I'm sure that's due to some collective bargaining agreement between the NFL. I'm not sure if Kraft keeps all the 3 games to glory money or if that gets cut 32 ways.

Maybe he could sell it to Al Jazeera.

Allegedly, somebody bought a real Vince Lombardi jacket at Goodwill and it was authenticated and they offered it to the NFL for some sum of money to put in the hall of fame and they said they only take donations and won't buy it.

The incredibly stupid part of it is they would more than make up for that million dollars. Hell I think he's giving them a great deal at only a million. NOW that's arrogance. Not drop kicking a kickoff....

Have to side on the NFL this time. Who the **** does that guy think he is? He didn't pay to produce it! Does he own the NFL films? Does he own the TV station that broadcast the game? If he were a true Packer fan or Chefs fan he would just donate it. **** him.

IMO 1 million is way too low. He gave them a gift.

I'd be bringing that thing straight to Sotheby's. I guarantee he'd get more than $1M for it.

Think about how much money is around the NFL? All the players? Brady and Manning and worth >$100M. That's not even considering the owners. Staubach is worth a few hundred million and that was a game from his era. He was probably watching that dreaming of playing in the NFL when he was in college. You have to imagine at least one of these guys would pony up a few million for a piece of NFL history. Even if it was only for personal use, the exclusivity is worth more than 6 figures.

They can't legally sell it to anyone and put themselves at risk if they do. All they can do is wait till the NFL decides they want it enough to pay enough for the copy. The NFL should come up and consider it a reward vs a purchase.

Maybe the NFL has a policy on this? If they gave money to every hoarder who had some memorabilia stash away they would set a bad precedent. Just speculating here.

The NFL can't afford it. They're too busy spending their money on lawyers and made up scandals.

not every memorabilia hoarder has the only known existing copy of the very first super bowl. sometimes you have to use your judgment and make exceptions. something the NFL isn't very good at doing (using their judgment).

This is really interesting. If you own something that has enormous commercial potential but you don't have the right to exploit that potential, what do you own?

From the NFL's perspective, there's a legitimate principle involved in not allowing someone to extort you for access to something you already own all rights to. And yet, it's not purely a matter of principle, because they were willing to pay five figures for it. (As the old joke goes, "now we're just negotiating over the price.") Same questionable stance from the other guy's perspective: he'd rather take his ball and go home than let the world see this piece of history without making him rich.

I'm not ready to call the league jerks for not being willing to pay whatever ransom the guy demanded. (I'll call them jerks for many other reasons, over course.) From the provenance, it's far from clear he even has the legal right to have it in his possession.

Are you sure? I'm sure they can't sell it for re-broadcast, but as a private sale for personal use only?

"I can't speak to any negotiations that have or haven't happened, but I can say that there is no known copy of the original broadcast, CBS or NBC, that is complete with all the plays."

As for the Paley Center tape, Riethmiller wrote, "it's missing a huge chunk of the third quarter from everything I've read."

The broadcast is missing part of the game, Simon confirms, yet it's still a key part of television history.

Yeah, that SEVERELY devalues the tape. Guy is asking too much. Clown.

I'm pretty sure that selling something for a million dollars qualifies as "commercial use." :)

Think of it this way: could you record this weekend's game and sell DVDs of it on EBay as long as the buyers promise not to broadcast it?

what if you don't sell DVDs of your recording, but only sell the original (and attest that you didn't make any copies to keep for yourself)?

I really don't think that changes anything. I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that there's no exception saying you can sell something you don't have the rights to as long as you only sell it once.
