Maybe he hit him in his shoulder but I thought Burfict caught Brown square in the melon. I'm going to go rewatch that hit.

Burfict is getting a punishment for a cumulative problems throughout his career. The guy is the dirtiest player in the league and that is saying a lot with Suh in the same league. That said, he will appeal and get it knocked down.

Plus both teams were warned before the game.

Why? I agree with it.

OBJ got just one game for one of the most obvious targeted shots in NFL history, despite there being absolutely no question whether or not there was either malice or intent.

Meriweather, a mutliple time offender, got two games. Burfict would be a fool not to appeal. And the guy who clicked <disagree> on my earlier post in this thread should know that.

Am I the only one who thinks 3 means something more than just the number of games they think is fair?

He hit him with his shoulder, on his shoulder, which forced Brown's head back, after he had already dropped his head. Brown soccer-flopped the rest.

Burfict deserves a small fine for hitting a defenseless receiver, that's it. He didn't target his head. He didn't lead with his head.

Look at the youtube video and slow it down to .25 speed. It was most definitely a shot to the head. Without a doubt.

Let's not pretend like Burfict walked out of the delivery room at the hospital and then threw this hit and got a suspension. He is dirty as hell, and has been his entire career. He's been filmed twisting ankles on the ground multiple times (in the same game even!), tapping guys in the groin, late knees, late hits, etc.

Deadspin has some of his greatest hits, twists and taps here:

Agreed. Anyone who feels this is unwarranted is a fool. Brad Marchand got 3 games because he was a multiple repeat offender. That's fine with me.

That hit on Brown was IMO no worse than Browners hit against SD last season. Browner didn't get suspended but he isn't the psycho that Burfict is.

I think based on his history, it is fair. The guy was fined $50k just two weeks ago for a cheap shot he took against a Ravens' player. A week later he is taking what could be considered a cheap shot at Antonio Brown.

Ok. That I can understand. I understand the the NFL needs to be consistent.

The funny thing is I think Meriweather is just a reckless player. I think Burfict wants to hurt people. And I think the League may agree with me.

It's sad that the NHL has a better discipline system then the NFL, because Bettman's a complete moron. If he can come up with/accept the NHL system* (not perfect, Marchand should have gotten fewer than 3 games, for example, but it's vastly superior to the NFL's essentially non-existent version), why the hell can't Goodell and company come up with a reasonable facsimile?

Oh, yeah... Roger Goodell's a power mad crusader.

*And I hate that the NHL has taking most of the policing out of the hands of the players.

He will now, though, that he knows the league won't give him the benefit of the doubt. Might as well.

I think he was referring to the 3 points that were a direct result of the penalties by Burfict and then Jones - the NFL rubbing it in

It's absolutely a possibility that a guy like that will figure "If I'm going to do the time anyway..."

What happens in the game has no bearing on punishments. The 3 points were a penalty that Burfict and Jones inflicted on their own team. The suspension is individual punishment for Burfict. Two different things.

Yep. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. At that point, he's not going to be careful next time. If you're going to get fined for something like this, might as well make it worth it next time and dish out maximum punishment.

Burfict used his shoulder, but to Brown's head. It wasn't shoulder to shoulder contact. In fact, Burfict never even got all that close to hitting Brown's shoulder. It was a total head shot.

NHL works because Bettman isn't involved in the player safety decision unless it is appealed. And every player safety suspension they release a video showing the hit, the reason for the suspension and if the player is a repeat offender. They don't hide behind a press release.

That is what the NFL needs to do, have a player safety department and only time Goodell or Vincent are involved is if the player appeals.

He had more than enough opportunity to simply keep himself up and away from Brown, but instead delivered a sneaky little shot with his shoulder. Seems it had the desired effect on Brown. Burfict is definitely one of the dirtiest players in the league and a textbook example of a guy playing out of control regularly. No problem with the three games.

That's the main issue with the NFL right now. No consistency in punishment which is clear evidence of bias for and against certain teams.
