OT: Calvin Johnson considering retirement

I think the assumption is that if he were to come here, it would be a reasonable deal for both sides.

1 year, $6-7 mill contract would be reasonable IMO

Reasonable is assumed since we're talking about the Pats, here, but what message are you sending to a guy like Edelman if you pay Megatron that much, even if it is a one year deal?

Edelman busted his ass for a lot less since he resigned with us.

Calvin honestly is just a little overrated. He is a very good WR but limited in some ways. However he would fit perfectly for the aspects the Patriots offense is missing.

It depends on his contract. I would take him here but not for the price he would probably want. I'd pay him 9-10M but he will probably want more like 14-15M.

Johnson might have Barry Sanders disease, sick of losing!

Could you imagine an offense with him, Edelman, Gronk, and Lewis?

Who do you double?

If he wants to win, then the Pats would make the most sense, as most all my f the other perennial contenders already have a big time WR.

Sending him a message that he's about to become even more dangerous in the offense.

He's a human being like the rest of us. Seeing them bring in someone else at big bucks when he's been busting his ass for this team is something that can engender bitterness, especially for a guy like Edelman whose contract is a mega bargain. I think it's a big part of why they don't tend to bring in big names like Revis.

Ten or more? No way.

Who are those 10?

Dez Bryant, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, DeAndre Hopkins, Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry, Demaryius Thomas, AJ Green.

I think those eight are clearly better. Then you have some guys with question marks (age, injuries) or proven it for long enough but are right in there with CJ based on where he is now. Allen Robinson, Jordy Nelson, Larry Fitzgerald, Brandon Marshall, Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski if you want to count his receiving/TD production only and not even factor in blocking.

Before you laugh at this, just remember, this is the Calvin Johnson of 2015, not the Calvin Johnson from two years ago. I've watched quite a few portions of Lions games this year on Sunday Ticket and was focusing on CJ because he was on my fantasy team. The guy just is no longer the same player. He is double teamed just like all the other players listed here, so if you think teams are putting in gameplans solely to neutralize him at this point in his career, you are mistaking this with what used to happen.

One thing I've noticed, too, is that the Lions are absolute masters of garbage yardage. With the game being close, they are so often shutdown, but Stafford gets so many yards when they are way behind and give 3-4 drives in prevent defense mode. Yes, you could say that about any team, but my eyes tell me that CJ is even less effective than his numbers indicate because he is so often shut down when defenses are in their normal mode.

Think it is more likely that he ends up in Carolina if he just wants to sign with a contender.

They come off hot a 15-1 season with their douchebag QB most probably being MVP.

Not after he sees them get bounced in the post-season

Doubt that the post season outcome will change the appeal of joining the Panthers a lot.

If he retires and then changes his mind the Lions still get him back, right?

Yes, I'm doing that annoying thing where I'm daydreaming about getting an awesome but aging vet on our team. Megatron is a legit awesome dude, imo.

I thought you're suppose to take the day off from patsfan? ;)

What's the appeal of the Panthers? They've had 1 good season, arguably thanks due to a cupcake schedule, and have a QB who can't even hit 60% of his passes on the year.

What have they done to earn the appeal of a contender over teams like Green Bay, Seattle, Denver, hell even Baltimore, and of course, New England?

Would never think it possible that megatron would come here although the Mega & Minitron dynamic is fun. But I quite like the idea of Megatron, Matt Forte and Steven Jackson being on this offense for one year together. Ooh, and Joe Thomas too. SB 45 here we come :)

IMHO he doesnt really fit into Seattle's offense, also not sure with how Graham performed thatbthey would be ready to again invest into another big name offensive piece. Denver has no QB that the would be able to use him well enough. Baltimore is not a contender.

Carolina has a young strong team, a recent MVP QB (I assume), great weather and enough consistent weapons so he wouldn't have to fight through double coverage all the time.

All those things are attractive. Also in addition he'd get more money there.

I personally agree with you that the Panthers are overrated and I dont think they will go far.

I call BS. The Lions dont want to pay and Mega wants to keep his dignity.

He'll retire and he'll listen to a team worth listening to.

My understanding is that he is a good route-runner and very intelligent.
But if he ritires don't the lions own his rights if he decides to come back?

That was yesterday. And day in that context meant the afternoon.

Boo-Hoo, Calvin.

No one forced him to sign with Detroit after his rookie contract was up.

Reason #694381 why the NFL should implement a draft lottery. Barring random acts of Integrity* good teams would have a shot at elite talent and elite talent would be squandered far less often. Imagine Johnson going to an actual NFL franchise? Bah gawd.
