Projecting the 2016 Compensatory Draft Picks - Over the Cap

Projected 3,5,6,7.

I think this was the best case scenario, Vince was toggling back and forth between a 5 & 6 parts of the year. This makes up a LITTLE for the Grand Theft. I know we'd have had these still but it makes me feel better to think that way.

I forgot the we got a 3rd for Talib last spring thought it was for Revis. That take some of the sting of losing that First Rounder and we can Trade comp picks now.

So, we'll have:

a second round pick
two third round picks
a fourth round pick
a fifth round pick (traded ours for Keshawn)
two sixth round picks (oops... THREE... thanks, BelichickFan :D )
three seventh round picks

That's not bad... the mad scientist can always do something with those late rounders...

Can't trade these ones though. It starts in 2017.

We got the Texans #6 in the Martin trade so we'll have three 6ths.

The 7ths actually intrigue me this year. One more Darryl Roberts type would be pretty excellent.

It's actually two 6th rounders. You are forgetting John Bostic. However, we do get three 7ths. We get the Texans pick for Mallett.

I'm half expecting the NFL to abolish the comp pick system as the Patriots have mastered it and 80% of the league acts like it doesn't exist.

You beat me to this statement...yes! yes! yes! We are lazy, it's too much to juggle, hurts the brain, let's just abolish it...

The best year was the year they went out and signed a bunch of free agents, but only ones waived by their old teams (who don't count against the team signing them). :)

The referenced 7th could move up to a 6th :

For the Patriots fans: Akeem Ayers is very close to the 6th/7th round bubble. The compensatory pick for him could go either way.

Goodall: "No, no, no. What about the other 5 or so teams (20%) that have used comp picks? We can't hurt them. Let's just give them the Patriots' picks. All of them."

Quite honestly, I don't think I can come up with an intellectual justification of why the comp system exists. What good to the league does it promote? If you developed a guy you got good play for him. If when his contract runs out another team decides to pay him more, why do you get a bonus for letting him go? It seems to create an incentive for us to say goodbye to all but the best homegrown players rather than to try to retain them. Is it trying to incentivize teams developing talent? I would think that the good teams would do that anyway.

But it exists, it benefits the Patriots greatly, and so I hope it stays forever, or at least until Belichick calls it quits.

It rewards teams that develop talent. The league always need players to move around for parity, but teams that seem to always lose players for salary cap issues should have some mechanism in place to continue developing talent.

It's better for the league, and gives more reasons for teams to continually be developing personnel

CBS Sports has a way too early mock draft up today. Like a fool, I scrolled through it, looking at the projections until I got to the Patriots pick (they were at #31, for some reason) which read "selection forfeited."

Based on everything we know about the decision to take away that #1 pick, it should read "selection stolen."

No, it was forfeited by the owner.
