Great topic
Of NE's homegrown studs......Collins, Hightower, Jones, Butler......how do you think NE would rank these based on importance to the defense? My ranking:

1) Butler (RFA)....#1 CB's are rare and expensive
2) Collins....coverage skills elevate him above Hightower.....rare commodity.
3) Hightower......indispensable run stopper
4) Jones ....lowest value because BB has proven he can find gems on open market

Who gets paid first? For this, we need to determine which player values being a Patriot most....which should mean a bit of a home team discount. Get one to bite....more may follow. Just guessing, I say Hightower takes a home team discount, NE pays market value for Collins, Jones hits the market, and Butler....???....the RFA status is restrictive...but all it takes is one team that needs a #1 CB, wants to set NE back.... both

I'm sure he doesn't think about that stuff until like, the day before their contract ends.

He probably calls their agents and asks for an extension on the payment date.

Bill has been thinking about these resignings since before he even signed these guys to begin with

Exactly. Depending on the player, there are levels of rigor that the team follows leading up to resigning players. Its all based on performance, market, salary, roster projections, etc.

It's also most likely who else is a free agent from other teams that year, who they are looking at in drafts etc. Its a huge puzzle and glad we have a master to do it.

from that list i really only see ~10 names that he would even be interesting in re-signing, and a few of those 10 names it will be really easy to resign

that being said, I'd expect the extensions to start coming this offseason, into next season, and then some wont happen until a little before contract expires, and some will prob happen after contract expires

From the top half of list....the long goners....Lafell and Chandler.....I personally would eradicate Cannon....and lowball Ninkovitch (sorry old man)

You definitely re-sign: Butler, Hightower, Collins, Sheard
You try to re-sign, if you can swing it: Jones, Ryan, Harmon, Branch

You don't sweat the rest. I mean, sure, you'd like Slater and Bolden, but at what price?

BB has consistently shown that he likes ST contributors much more than fans do

It has been said with great reverence that BB has a plan for the guy who takes care of the Field Turf.. sure the behind the scenes brain trust has a plan, back up plan and a back up plan to the back up plan in place.

Absolutely. They start with a projection or working plan and bake in a plan B or plan C.

As others have said as it pertains to Malcolm, their plan A is ( I assume)to stick with him, project that he will continue to improve on a ProBowl/All-Pro trajectory and offer him an extension that is financially reasonable. If that operating plan goes astray (and it easily could), their plan B is to draft a player (cost) and backfill the role.

I would add Logan Ryan to make it a top 5. If we let Chandler Jones walk, Sheard becomes
an important extension.

He's not on the list because he's a FA this year but I'd add Akiem Hicks. The interior DL has been a developing strength this year. He's a nice mix of someone who can stop the run but can also get penetration.

I wish they had fought to get their draft picks back. It sucks. They still have that money to sign a free agent but still.

I wonder how much Lewis's injury right after signing the extension weighs on the players in terms of giving them an incentive to sign earlier and take the guaranteed money. Resigning earlier might be lower than market value later on versus risking a major injury that could and would decrease their market value. Food for thought...

The very first re-signing is not on your list, Nate Ebner.
