Why should Belichick get a pass?

I do like informative banter. Because I am not privy to all the info and facts that BB has speaking over headsets with multiple coaches. Years of professional wisdom. My answer would be What would I be giving him a pass on?

He has surpassed any thought in my mind to question him. The dominance we have had in the past 14 years makes me admire from afar. I take the attitude of I know he is not perfect, but who the hell is.

He always takes the approach of what is best for the team. Some of those choices have turned out popular some not so. In the end we just keep on dominating the league. When the league set it up 20 years ago that it was impossible for a dynasty to ever happen again.

Possible Answer to question 4. With Vollmer hurt and inexperienced receivers. The deep ball would only get Brady killed. The short pass could get picked with a lack of a perfectly run route or a undercut knowing the short slants were coming. Obviously there was a lot of distrust of the Offense by decisions at end of half and game. I was fearful of a Tackle just taking off the waiver wire from another team was protecting Brady's blindside. Just my opinion

Do you think BB says to himself: "I'm not going to get on Brady in the next film session for throwing that pick, because he has four rings"? Of course not, as Brady himself has said any number of times. That's one of the best things about the Patriots--they don't dwell in the past, or what someone did years ago. Bill is the best coach in the league, but he still doesn't get a pass.

Dear Mr. 20-Post Guy:

The key to enjoying patsfans is to be able to agree or disagree with other posters, without being disagreeable or obnoxious. The title of this thread is "Why Should Belichick Get a Pass?" Naturally, there will be some who think he should, and some who think he shouldn't. If you're going to get upset at people who offer different opinions, you should probably find another forum.

Let me be clear, I consider Belichick to be the best coach in the game by a long margin just like everyone else, however, some of his decision making make no sense to me. One of the primary reasons why I like Belichick is because he thinks analytically (myself being a mathematician).

He looks at all possible outcomes and selects the best possible one for the team at that moment. However, there are some decisions that he makes which to me makes no sense at all. I believe there are better options available at those situation.

  1. What was the point of wasting a timeout at the end of regulation time, when the clock was already stopped.
  2. Why did he go for a blocked punt formation and not keep a punt returner? It's hard to block a punt when the blockers already know it. With a good return and a timeout we could have atleast tried a 50 yard FG with the best kicker in the game.
  3. Why did he chose to kick the ball in OT? His answer is "It's best for the team". WTF does that mean? It clearly isn't. The Pats couldn't stop the Jets for most of the game and he suddenly realized he could stop them? You get the ball and try to score. The defense then knows what it needs to do.
  4. Why was there no urgency at the end of the half when we had over a minute left? I understand that we were banged up, but with this banged up team we wouldn't have scored at the start of the 2nd half either. What's the point of playing if you are not confident in your team. Just take out Brady, Gronk and all the starters and put in the 2nd stringers.

I find it irritating that Bill never (or atleast I've never heard him say) says "I made a mistake with that call". It's always "What's best for the team", when clearly it's not the case in some situations. I'm no coach and I'm criticizing a 6 time SB champion coach, but just because he has won 6 superbowls doesn't mean that every decision he makes is the right one.

\end rant

STAHP.

He is the greatest head coach of all time and is smarter than you and I could ever hope to be when it comes to football.

I will leave it to him to decide what is bests for his team.

I think this Mike Reiss article helps in this regard.

Contrast in media reaction from Patriots' OT losses is striking

I'm bumping this thread again. For today's game, the confusion is strong here.

Were we playing for #1 seed or for health?

If we were playing for #1 seed with that playcalling, then God help us for the playoffs. If we were playing for health, then why was Brady, Gronk and all the starters in the game. Looked like we are more banged up after this game than we were before it. Brady was limping, Chung looked like took a shot.

WTF is going on with this team and coaching staff.

I marvel at Brady. He has become the GOAT quarterback with little help from coaching staff getting him weapons or a good O-line. The one year they got him Moss, he tore up the league.

Loyko on twitter:

Text from someone close to the team: "We only had 37-38 players who were full-go today" #Patriots

Dont think there is any question that health was key today.

I have said it multiple times, you dont throw games. Try to play it close, see if opponent makes any mistakes and maybe you can get away with something.

We have played with essentially vanilla defensive schemes in the last two games. Similarly, how many seam routes for Gronk have you seen in the last few weeks?

We are playing conservatively on both sides trying to expose players to minimal danger.

Why do we play starters? Because football players play football. Minimize risk and see if you can still get away with something if the opponent stinks it up.

Disagree all you want but what happened in the last two games are not coaching mistakes but clearly the marching orders and general philosophy.

Don't you haters feel stupid now?!? Hey.....I called it!? (Not that I'm happy watching this team take the harder road to the big dance)...... Could see the writing on the wall on this one

QUOTE="stcjones, post: 4491980, member: 1944"]Pats almost always struggle in Miami.....ALL the pressure is now on the Pats.....Miami will be playing THEIR Super Bowl .....I can see this blunderous decision by BB coming back to bite this team. We shall see...[/QUOTE]

Knowing the clown car of an OL he was going to use, Bill should not have played Brady at all.

A much more mobile QB would've been needed to have any shot of merely competing, never mind winning. Bill should've started Garoppolo.

He's human and like ALL THE REST OF US is prone to making errors in judgement. He should get a pass because he's lead this team to four SB wins (should be six), nine AFCCG's and countless double-digit win seasons. He has also made plenty of decisions, like not calling a T.O. in last year's SB when I was screaming at the TV to take a T.O., and that worked out. Look, you're going to win some and lose some. I agree that the past few weeks have been very un-Patriots, but I'm not going to condemn a man who, when the chips are all in, he wins more than he loses. There is no other coach I trust to coach up this banged up team in these playoffs than BB. I like our chances with him at the helm.

ummm........BB can't get a pass.......he's not playing

I'd say six rings give him a little bit of a pass.
