Hi,
I was at the game yesterday (only my second road trip anywhere), so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. My brother and I went in our full Pats gear. I wasn't sure if we were just 'asking for trouble', but I wanted to be proud and root for my team.
I know that there is video circulating about Jets fans sucker punching and kicking Pats fans (which yes is despicable), but I wanted to circulate a differing story.
I sat in section 336 yesterday, and was actually surprised by how many Patriots fans went to the game. In fact, my section seemed to be more Patriots than Jets. There were even Patriot chants coming from my section throughout the game.
Of course, however, there were still plenty of Jets fans around, including the ones sitting around me. I will say that their behavior was better than expected. Sure, there was some good-natured back and forth throughout the game, but even they acknowledged that beating the Pats would be like beating a team that is just limping into the playoffs with all of their injuries. All in all there was good interaction, nothing was thrown in either direction, and there was some good conversation to be had. In fact, one of the Jets fans was telling me about how he went to the AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh in the early 2000's, just he and his dad. He said they went into the bathroom, were not causing any trouble, and 13 STeelers fans wouldn't let them out of the bathroom for like 20 minutes. (I'm not sure why they would want to do that considering that these fans would be missing the game too)...but then we got into our mutual dislike for Steeler fans.
The fans went on to say that they naturally hate us, but he respects Brady and Belichick b/c their is no way to just ignore their accomplishments. He said he hates the team in the same way that Boston fans hate the Yankees. it just comes with the territory when you win.
With yesterday essentially being a playoff game for the Jets I was absolutely shocked seeing all the Pats jerseys that I did.
So maybe some of the passionate, well educated football fans I met yesterday were part of the minority, but I'll say that I had a pleasant experience with them.
