If Goodhell is such a marketing genius, how could he screw up the Pro Bowl so bad?

Easy answer to the original question:

The Pro Bowl is inherently hard to market because it's a pointless game played at half speed with nothing on the line.

Yes ... the concept is fine they should eliminate the game itself and just consider the election an achievement. All the all star games have sucked since cable / satellite TV / the internet.

I'm talking about marketing the game of NFL football, it's players and the league, not marketing one meaningless game.

Fans might enjoy a little pitch and catch and other exhibitions where they get to see players with their helmets off.

Look at fantasy football, for an example. You could take an exciting defensive battle with great offensive line play and somebody's take out of all that is that Joe Baloneyskins caught five balls and helped your fantasy team win that week.

It wasn't important to the game, but someone was entertained by those five catches.

Im in complete favor of a skills competition. Who is the fastest, strongest etc. Which kicker can get the most 60 yard kicks.

Add a little touch football [or approximation] with the best qbs throwing every play? A lot better promotion for the league than forcing some teams to fly to London, play on thursdays and whatever abomination they come up with, during the season.

Curious use of the word "genius". Would never have thought to apply it in this case.

Okay, I've got a theory on how it got screwed up. Stay with me here, because this is going to be pretty complicated. What happenned was:

Goodell is actually an idiot

How about something combining other popular TV viewing concepts?

Call it "Pro Bowl Survivor" where the AFC and NFC are two tribes.

Drop the players off on a Gilligan's island type locale where the first team that figures out how to get rescued wins, while they have random contests where a losing player gets voted out of the competition.

Hilarity ensues!

Pro bowl ufc fighting, first contest is between the odds on favorite defensive mvp and the corruptioner, 10 second count before the fight is stopped for a knock out, since brain injuries are so funny and mild...

The All Star Game should be like "The Longest Yard:" instead of guards against cons it would be NFL Headquarters against the All Stars. To be fair we would let the Jets play for the NFL HQ team. And yes Goodell, Vincent, Gardi, Blandino, Pash, Kensil HAVE TO PLAY. The Paul, Weiss attorneys would dress up as cheerleaders for the NFL side.

I would definately watch that game.

Don't forget the snap count minimums for the jets fans lucky enough to play with the pros! What I'd give to see suh out wide in coverage to "jam Rog."

I just like watching the skills competition from NBA and NHL. Does the NFL* have a pro bowl skills competition> I remember the week before the pro bowl they would show players doing skills comnpetitions from probowls a few years back on NFL* Network. Did they stop that or do they not air that?

To me, it never mattered who won, so skills competition, touch football emphasizing passing every play, whatever. showcase the stars, nobody gets hurt, market the The product around the world.
