Sports Illustrated: Gronk wouldn't be Gronk if he didn't play for Patriots

The logic here is unassailable. Gronk is a superior physical talent whose play is enhanced by virtue of the fact that he plays with the GOAT QB and is coached by the GOAT coach who has consistently put him in schemes to maximize his talent. It's all good ...

That what the Patriots do best, play to the strengths of the players and accentuate their abilities. If that is the "system" I am all for it..

How many times have we seen a player excel in our "system" only to flounder in another system, Patrick Chung comes to mind...

The era of Tight Ends is because of Gronk or arguably Belichick's TE friendly schemes. And did Belichick devise those schemes and Gronk fell into it or did Belichick devise the scheme to fit his players? As for the Brady effect, it exists. For the most recent example, look at how Brandon LaFell is OK now that he is a Patriot. However it was bigger in like 2006 and stuff. Brady is older now. Just look at his stats with and without Gronk. Heck, Belichick addressed this.

While I don't pay for it, saw Field Yates rank Gronk in BSPN Insider as the #1 catching AND blocking TE in the league and possibly GoAT.

No arguement

Well, if Gronk had played for Rex Ryan, people would probably think he was an OT.

Anyone subscribing to BSPN insider(yeah I'm sure ONE person here does, right?) want to give us the rest of the list?

Well then Jerry Rice wouldn't be who he was if he didn't go to the 49ers and play with Montana and then Young.

The end of the article said just that.

FWIW all teams have a system otherwise why have a coaching staff at all.

That being said it is my observation that BB's system is perhaps the most fluid system in the NFL. The BB system is not dictated by scheme but rather by Personal. Which means the players who make the team out of training camp will dictate the plays and schemes on both sides of the ball from week to week.

The only other team who comes close to this is the Cardinals with Bruce Arians. I have not watched the Cardinals enough to know if Arians applies this concept in week to week contests like the Pats or only in setting the overall strategy of the team each year.

At the NFL level every player has a lot of talent along with strengths and weaknesses. Most teams attempt to find players who will fit their scheme. BB looks at the players strengths and weaknesses and attempts to fit the players strengths to a scheme he can employ that will maximize the players success.

This approach is why even though the NE Coach and Gm have never changed during Brady's tenure here the team and its schemes have changed on both sides of the ball dramatically over the years.

This is why most players who have left NE have not seen a lot of success elsewhere. BB doesn't use a set team scheme in which individual players must fit rather BB schemes individual players strengths weaving them together with other individual team members to create a total team whose sum is greater than the individual parts that make it up.

In essence what BB does creates a force multiplier by weaving each team members individuals strengths into the whole.

Sadly this is, i believe a unique skill that BB alone possess, which when BB steps away from the game will never be duplicated again.

BB is truly a Giant among his NFL peers.

If he played on a team like CLE with no QB...he wouldn't have as many yards and TDs. If he played with even a decent QB..he would still be a stud

And that is the reason for their continued success, not psi or any other thing someone wants to dream up. And to add to it he tailors the game plan to that weeks opponent, not shoving a scheme down the other teams throat every week.

Not impressed with the circular logic. Yeah, Gronk wouldn't be Gronk... but he is.

You could say Brady wouldn't be Brady with any other team. Belichick wouldn't be Belichick with any other team. All of it is true and pointless.

They are, and it is part of what they are and how History will remember them.

We don't live with alternate universes, where Belichick coached the Jets and flopped under crappy ownership, or Brady was drafted by the Niners, played three years as a backup on a team that never made the playoffs, then went into selling Health Insurance

Here you go...
1. Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots: If this list were based simply on receiving abilities, Gronk would be at the top. If it were based simply on blocking abilities, Gronk also would top it. It is not hyperbole to suggest that Gronk could go down as the most dominant tight end the NFL has ever seen. He's far too big for defensive backs to consistently hold up against in coverage and too athletic for linebackers to consistently slow down. Gronkowski is perhaps the best offensive player in football among non-quarterbacks.

I can't tell if you're trolling me or if you misunderstood what I was asking for. I'm asking for the 2nd to 10th Tight end on the list.

Eifert, Olsen, Kelce, Jordan Reed, Julius Thomas, Graham, Delanie Walker, Barnidge, and Charles Clay

That was until the pats figured out the right way to use him this time around.

So basically Gronk is a good player because he plays with the GOAT, is in a system that maximises his skill-set, coaches are using Tight Ends more and more because of their versatility and he's just darn good? Mind blown.

Yea BB took most of the blame on misusing Patrick during his 1st stint with the team.

I didnt read the article that way. I took it to claim that Gronk would be an All-Pro and HoF somewhere else but in NE- because they have TB12,BB, the system and is in a passing era, he is GRONK.

It was a B+ article but more importantly I don't think it meant any disrespect or intended to discredit Gronk or the Pats in any way.
