Gronk being singled out by the league on OPI

What makes this even more infuriating is the fact Gronk - arguably the toughest cover in the league - needs to commit OPI more often than anyone else in the entire NFL in order to get open, according to refs.

He's the NFL equivalent of Shaq in his prime.

Not a good analogy. Shaq lowered his shoulder and drove defenders backwards on a routine basis, which is not the way basketball is generally supposed to be played.

Didn't something similar slow down Ben Coates?

I said this two weeks ago: when gronk is split wide or in the slot, there is no historical comparison to Gronk. Every receiver does what he does, no other receiver can move a linebacker back 3 yrds with his arm tucked in.

It's Shaq, it's Chara, it's a penalty for being bigger and badder than everyone else.

No, it's Shaq. Hockey isn't as popular as basketball.

Note to future players thinking about playing in the NFL: If you are too good, the league will target you to make it fair for other teams.

No need for future players. The way the league office runs the league, the bad officiating and the concussion issues there won't be any interest in the NFL.

Gifford's name being associated with brain injury and being well known will force parents and schools to reconsider their kids playing football. Young kids can't handle head injuries. The new movie coming out will bring more attention to brain injuries. Football medical insurance will go sky high. High schools will eliminate football from their sports programs, etc.

The OPI tonight was so ridiculous that even Collinsworth couldn't defend the call.
Which is not to say he didn't try.
God i hate having to listen to him.

Except he did. I looked right at my dad and said this clown can't bring him self to say it was a bad call.

Paraphrasing here but he said something like "eh, I don't know, that could go either way"

I'm not gonna pat the dude on the back just because he leaned towards it being a bad call.

That call changed the game more than the mugged punt, because right there and then you knew the pats were playing the broncos and refs the rest of the way.

We got a pathetic call on our last regular time drive for defensive pass interference and literally 5 minutes later a no call on a blatant holding on second down. I don't believe there was a fix but I do believe the refs are the crazy kids no one wants to play online games with cause they are unpredictable in their actions. I'm so disgusted.
That is no paraphrase. That's exactly what Collingsworth ended up saying. The guy is a Hater. He did much the same thing on that BS Holding call in the end zone.. At one point Collingsworth said there was "a little holding" on the play.

To be fair I have seen a couple of good push-offs by Gronk this season that were called for OPI, but not this one. I didn't see anything resembling a real push-off here. Simply a bad call.

I've seen more than a few times this season in various games where the refs are interfering in the game by calling really ticky-tack OPI and DPI.

The NFL lets defenders mug him all the way down field. If they are going to allow that, then allow him to play rough to.

Yep. I'd actually be fine with the emphasis on OPI if it was a) called consistently on all TEs and b) TEs would also benefit from the very same strict interpretation when LBs or CBs are illegaly touching them on their routes. But here I go again using the word "consistent" in the same sentence as "referee". Stupid me.

This is one time when the Felgers of the world can't say Pats fans are just being sensitive or conspiracy theorists. It is pretty obvious that something came down from the league office. This just became an issue this season when Gronk has been playing the same way for six years now? C'mon. Tapes couldn't do it. Deflated footballs couldn't do it. Stolen draft picks couldn't do it. Hell, even mounting injuries couldn't do it. So now let's take their best weapon and arguably the most valuable player to his team in the NFL out of it by calling him for the most BS penalty there is. Certainly the league office, that Brady and a federal judge made a fool of off the field, was not going to allow Brady to continue to shame them on the field. Did you see those numbers he was putting up? LOL

Consistency really is the problem. It seems like the Refs have said "He's so freaking big and fast, that you can't really cover him normaly, so go ahead and play physical". And that would be OK if that was allowed with all TEs, and if Gronk could play that way against the people in coverage. There needs to be consistency in what's allowed and what's not. Right now they are just making it up as they go.
