OT: Manziel demoted from starter to 3rd string QB

And there goes any reason to watch that Monday night game.

But, unless he was snorting coke, I don't see this as a big deal.

As others have said, it's not just about a weekend of partying. Context is everything. Here's a news story from just one week ago:

BEREA, Ohio -- Johnny Manziel, named the Browns' full-time starter Tuesday, promised coach Mike Pettine that he'll be a model citizen -- beginning with the bye this week.

"I let him know that I'm not going to do anything that's going to be a distraction to this team or be an embarrassment to the organization,'' he said. "I'm going to get a chance to go and relax like everybody else in this locker room is. I don't think they're going to have to worry about me this week."

For most 22-year-olds, that's not an issue. But Manziel spent 10 weeks in an addiction treatment center in the offseason, and those incidents are red flags for the organization. That's why Pettine sat down and addressed it with Manziel Tuesday morning after handing him the reins.

"He's done some things to affect that trust, clearly,'' said Pettine. "And it's something that we talk about. He understands it and he knows that with these expectations there comes great responsibility. That's something that he knows he has to live up to."
New starter Johnny Manziel: 'I'm not going to do anything to be an embarrassment to this organization'

He made his employers a bunch of promises, and immediately, publicly broke them all. There HAD to be consequences.

He's about one more mistake from being "Johnny out of Football". I wonder if any team will even take a flier on him next year.

Match made in heaven.

Oooooh. Bad bad boy. How we have fallen as a society. Didn't Wells pitch a perfect game hammered? Michael Irvin was into powder, no? How about the guy who pitched a game on LSD? I can list many many more.

Manziel in the right system can play. That whole team is dysfunctional.
Larry Bird was allegedly a coke head.

If the latest report is true, this was apparently even worse than what was originally put out to the public:

As if Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel hadn’t already given the team more than enough reasons to never trust him again, here’s another. According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, Manziel lied to the Browns about the circumstances surrounding the photos that surfaced following his bye-week excursion to Texas.

Per Glazer, Manziel not only told the team that the photos weren’t taken over the weekend but also recruited others to vouch for the falsehood.

Report: Manziel lied to Browns about recent photos

So he had a fall guy and it still did not work? He needs a better fall guy. His so called friends let him down big time. Why the need for recording **** these days? If you are doing stuff that can get you into trouble, why all the opportunity for it to get out on film in the first place?
Don't drink or don't get rapping while holding a giant bottle. Which Rookie symposium did he attend?

The difference about now and whatever athletes did or didn't do years ago is the fact there aren't any photos proving it. Whether we like it or not, unfortunately we're in a different decade where everyone has a cell phone. It's simple, if you play well and you're not hurting anyone other than yourself, most guys get a break. If you're not playing well and you're involved in domestic violence incidents, being sent to rehab, etc., the leash is obviously much shorter.

Surprised he's getting so many people defending him. You have to equate this to Gronk - Gronk acted like an idiot early in his career but played well and was just a goofball and didn't hurt anyone and did a reasonably good job of not creating a negative image for himself. I doubt anyone here believes that Manziel is really a good guy and a good player getting a raw deal...or at least I hope no one really feels that way...?

In the beginning I thought that the Browns overreacted. But if he decided to try to lie to them. Then I move over the the Browns camp on this one. How freaking stupid can he be? Doesn't he understand that things like this comes out, and that his lie will crumble in hours, if not minutes when a team with all the contacts they can get looks into it?

Johnny Manziel benched for LYING to coaches about drinking video and getting friends to help convince team in cover-up

Johnny Manziel LIED about to coaches about partying video

On Tuesday Pettine said he had seen the video and spoken to Manziel, who spent 70 days during the offseason in a rehab facility specializing in treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, Cleveland.com reported.

'Disappointing — very,' Pettine said following practice.

'I can't stand here and say it's not — whatever word we want to use — disappointing, frustrating.

'When the behavior repeats, it's certainly a cause for concern.'

Would he still be on the roster if was with the Pats and got caught lying to the team about breaking his promises to not be an embarrassment?

I can understand the Browns being caught between a rock and a hard place with a first round pick, cap hit and dead money if they cut him, but would the Patriots weigh those considerations against principle differently?

I think they would. And I think that difference is the bedrock of accountability that makes this franchise successful far beyond those that compromise accountability over cap hits and draft pick embarrassments. What do you think?

EDIT: realized that there is a word for that difference: INTEGRITY

Gronk also worked hard when it was time to work. The reports are that Manziel didn't. Which is the kiss of death for a QB.

Breaking News: Browns announce the hiring of Chris Carter to mentor Manziel in how to find the right "fall guy"....

"Because all you guys aren't going to do the right stuff," Carter said. "I need to teach to you how to get around all of this stuff too. If you have a crew, one of them fools need to know that they're going to jail. I know a lot of you aren't going to drink, I know a lot of you aren't going to use drugs, but still get yourself a fall guy."

Players with Manziel's attitude typically fall away, after a few years. Then they want to get serious- to earn some money -and they don't get back in. He's living it up, now, but that's just a flash in the pan...and he hasn't flashed much. However, the Browns flashed a lot of cash.

after his rookie contract is up...he will be flashing money signs while washing windows....at the nearest intersection....

He'll never wash windows. He's a trustifarian. That's the major problem, I think. People talk about players with a sense of entitlement - and this kid was born on 3rd base thinking he hit a triple.

Manziel does not need to work! When you hear the speeches of most HOFer's you get the impression that they were mostly driven to succeed because of their family financial situation. They enjoyed the game, but they also took football as the best chance they had in bringing their family from poverty. So the grind was on, it was just not the alarm clock that woke them up. Others were driven by critics, and a few by the desire to be the bestever-Manning.
Manziel... just a kid who could run around the field until he finds an open receiver. He just wants to have fun. He is not interested in becoming anything other than having a good time.
I am not sure what still drive the outlier which is Gronk. Could be a simple case of nurtured competitiveness.

I guess there are an advantage for being lightweight for a QB. If he did not go in the air there, he could have broken some bones in his neck.
