How Good Do You Think Carolina Is?

Who do you think wins it though? To me unless Green Bay really figures things out I see it being between them and Arizona. Don't see Seattle going on a run as a wildcard. (If they even make it)

I didn't see the Giants going into Green Bay and beating Favre in sub zero temps and then beating the only 18-0 team to ever grace the planet either....but it did.

Yep, Arizona and Carolina are the teams to beat in the NFC. I give the nod to Arizona, they are scary good but that beatdown of the Cowboys by the Panthers was pretty eye-opening.

You can credit half of Carolina's point last night to one player - Tony Romo.... The game would not have been such a blowout had Romo not do his 'Romo Classics' routine of throwing picks and getting injured.

I think Cam Newton should be suspended for four games for being generally aware that it is more probable than not that the Panthers are 10-1. If you paid him enough, Ted Wells could write a report that proves it.

they appear pretty good right now. would like to see how they do against Arizona. I think they could get to 16-0 based on their schedule, as long as they stay healthy, but will be curious about that. The pressure builds each week when climbing that mountain. Shula has chimed in, where's Mercury Morris? Are they in the correct zip code yet?

Oh, they're in the right zip code, particularly since Don Shula's son Mike is Carolina's OC.

Any way you look at it, they're in the top 3 teams offensively in terms of average points scored per game (now over 30 ppg), and will now likely be in the top 3 teams defensively as well.

They were 5th heading into the game giving up about 19 points per game, but obviously that went down after yesterday.

Seattle didn't have anything close to a challenging schedule last year, so the comparisons are spot on in just about every way. They run the ball successfully, use the read option to their advantage, spread the ball out in the passing game to a bunch of no names (sans Olsen), and play tough, physical defense.

depending upon certain variables that we don't even know yet, mostly involving injury situations

One missed block slipping on a field that had just had five dozen kids dancing to a halftime show for a strip sack TD...a bobble pick-6 because of an injury...there are a million ways to die in the NFL that are as much circumstance as talent.

That right there is why I would hate for them to go 19-0. Last thing I want to hear is that old geezer Shula crowing about it.

Absolutely, which kind of makes the conversation futile. It's a fine topic to pass the time on a message board, but the debate about "how good a team is" seems pointless, since it's all about who's better for one game.

We need look no farther than the 2012 AFCCG loss at home to BAL where we were 9 point favorites and clearly the superior team. Unfortunately, the wind played a huge factor, as we had the ball SEVEN times in what is normally considered FG range (inside the 35), yet only came away with a measly 13 points.

The 2010 divisional loss at home to the NYJ had a similar point spread, and we had just won 45-3 only a month earlier.

The bottom line is that any of the top 4 teams in each conference can beat better teams. Hell, we see it every single year.

Schedule aside, last year's Seattle defense was a few notches above Carolina's this year. Aside from Kuechly, I don't think the average fan can name even one player on that defense.

I am still not sold on Newton. Cam is still a 57% completion QB. The better QBs are 66% completion players. 2 out of every 3 pass attempts is a completion.

Cam is being coddled and appears to be on pace to attempt the fewest passes of his NFL career. I believe the sulking head case Cam is still there and can be exploited if forced into mistakes. Stop the run and force Cam to beat you.

My Father always told me that when you get in the playoffs put your money on the better QBs.

I think they're a very tough team that reminds me of the 2003 Patriots - great and underrated defense led by the LB and secondary, ball control run-first offense. They play good solid field position football, and with Riverboat Ron learning accidentally the benefits of taking calculated risks, they have enough flair to pull off big plays despite lacking playmakers on the Offense other than Cam. I think they're playing smart football, dedicating to the run and the field position battle. Their Special Teams seem solid too. I can see them making it all the way to the big game.

That said, I agree that the Patriots are a bad matchup for them. They'll play us tough, but they don't have the horses on the DL to pressure with everyone else back in coverage and you know what Tom does to blitzes. Our D would gameplan to take away the run and keep Cam in the pocket and I feel confident we'd be able to bottle them up that way. Would be a tough game though, doubt we'd be able to blow them out. They're built to prevent that.

I didn't read through the entire thread but look at who've they played so far?

Jags
Texans
Saints
Bucs
Seahawks
Eagles
Colts
Packers
Titans
Redskins
Cowboys

Seattle and Green Bay have been the toughest teams on their schedule and both of them are really flawed.

The eye test tells me that their defense is excellent and their offense is opportunistic but that could simply be a result of poor competition thus far.

You can cite the schedule for any NFL team this season because the league sucks. And these assh0les want to expand the playoffs? Give me a break.

Was it only me that has come to the conclusion Cam Newton's teammates secretly hate this guy's guts. I'm sure they like winning....but .....two instances in yesterday's game showed me that this guy is despised.

1) Luke Kuechly takes an INT to the house and then exits up the side lines to be greeted by the over the top/camera mugging Newton screaming like a camera mugging/its all about me jagoff......and Kuechly plus two other defenders looked at him like Newton was the biggest A-hole on the planet.
2) Newton scores his obligatory "screw my teammates I'm gonna run it in for the score TD" followed by the camera mugging dance number....while ONLY two OL wait in the wings to join in....but of course Cam the camera mugging/its all about me jagoff ignores the OL....doesn't even acknowledge their existence....and runs off to mug for the crowd/cameras...etc. He then proceed to the Panthers bench where he ignored teammates he passed (one high five) and players didn't bother to go over and show any love.

Maybe I'm seeing what I want to see.......a self promoting jackass.......but I know I'd hate being this guy's teammate anytime but game time. And even then. I bet the defense resents the over the top publicity Newton gets when it is the great Defense that allows this ultra conservative Panther's offense to not have to play beyond their limitations.

I like to fall back on Bill Parcells' adage when asked the question posed in the thread title: "You are as good as your record says you are." They're undefeated at Week 12. They're very good.

On the one hand, they've compiled that record by beating teams with a cumulative record of 48--65 and they've only beaten one team with a winning record. On the other hand, this is a League where "Any Given Sunday," is a mantra we can't ignore, and, somehow, they have found a way to win every game they've played.

They have five games left against teams with a cumulative record of 26--24 (counting Atlanta twice).

While Atlanta is the only team they have yet to play that has a winning record, they also have to visit the Meadowlands to play the Giants, who seem to be getting ready to do another one of their drive-you-batshit-crazy late season runs to win a pathetic NFC East. They also have to visit NOLA to play a Saints' team with a lot to prove.

Bottom line for me? They might go 16--0, but I don't see them winning in January against Arizona, New York or Green Bay, even at home. Do I have anything to back that up besides my gut? Nope.

Very observant and, perhaps, very perceptive. Thanks!

They are BIG cats and they appear blue! But guess what? I am still here. ;)
