@PP_Rich_Hill: Jonathan Freeny outsnapped Jerod Mayo 53 to 16. The global population scratches its collective head.

Can someone explain the above to me? Is BB scared that Mayo could get hurt again in extended playing time?

Mayo was back to his old self last night. He made 3-4 plays in just 16 snaps and one of them was in coverage. I think we can all agree that we want Mayo taking the LB3 snaps when Collins returns.

Wait mayo only played 16 snaps and had five tackles? How can that be right?

He looked pretty good for only few snaps. Only negative play I saw from him was when he was unable to shed a block and allowed for 8 or 9 yd run I think.

Mayo had a lot of spring in his step, whilst Freeny was simply not impressive in any phase. Not sure what the staff sees in him right now, but hopefully Collins will return and solve that issue.

I didn't really get to watch much of the game but I saw mayo in on a play and when I saw the box score I assumed that he was playing over freeney

Mayo looked very good doing certaing things, but he didn't look like his old self. When he played a position similar to 3-4 OLB and basically just attacking forward he looked good. He shower power and the ability to straight line burst and speed. The problem was when he had to play more of a sideline to sideline role as off the line LB. He didn't look as smooth and fluid as you would like in his movement, and not as fast as before.

Agree. It also looked like the coaching staff trusts Freeney much more in coverage.

Hopefully Mayo becomes our Bob Sanders (Colts 06) for us in the playoffs we are going to need him

BB referenced Mayo's play on WEEI yesterday. He said he's still not quite back 100% but working very hard and is close to getting back those few "extra ticks" that he's currently missing. He also made note of another unnamed player who had the same surgery last year as Mayo and has yet to play a snap this year. He seemed very happy with his progress while also acknowledging his leadership in the locker room, weight room and team meetings.

I think that this is Mayo's "farewell tour", glad to have him on this team even if it is in a limited capacity..

Or maybe he could go over to TB 12's and get some "magic elixir" in some parts of the country it is known as the fountain of youth...

I get that he has more range, speed and quickness than Mayo but trust in coverage?

I'd love to know why....

He reminds me of Gary Guyton back there.

Simple. Mayo would replace Hightower if necessary. It isn't and Hightower is more mobile than him. Freeney is quicker, he's replacing Collins.

I'm afraid the ship's sailed on Mayo except on obvious running downs. It's a passing league, they don't really need a "running downs only" linebacker.

I like Mayo and it's sad he's lost almost two seasons to injuries, but in that span, Hightower has replaced him and Collins will put Freeney back on the bench. Question is, in a passing league, how often doyou need a 3rd linebacker and when you do, what type of linebacker do you need.

I agree with the poster who hoped Mayo could have a an impact this year, I could see him coming back with a vengeance as an extra force. Unfortunately, his best future utility would be as a Hightower replacement and Hightower simply does a lot of what Mayo used to and more that Mayo never did.

I seldom suggest trades, but a team needing leadership and a great tackler would really benefit from mayo.

Why is, Collins is out. I don't think anyone is saying Mayo is similar to Collins in his strengths. Collins has become a good tackler, but it's mobility and pass coverage they're looking for to play with Hightower.

I agree. It's not because they trust him. It's because they don't have a choice.

He did recover the fumble, alas he also proceeded to fumble it, fortunately we kept the ball.

So why did they sign Spikes?

This would seem to be the best answer regarding Mayo.

Mayo was a perennial pro-bowl 3 down linebacker his entire career. When you get the tendons in your knee shredded, it tends to slow you down for awhile

Mayo's only played in about 25% of defensive snaps all year. Monday night was no exception.

This will be his last season here, and I think he would have been let go last offseason if not for his injury. His role has been diminishing since Collins emerged in late 2013.
