OT: Manziel demoted from starter to 3rd string QB

What in the hell happened there? That seems like a dramatic turnaround from last week.
He was filmed partying with a bottle of champagne over the weekend.

I do not know what he went to rehab for, alcohol may never have been a problem for him, so I cannot put the champagne in a vacuum without knowing more about his issues.

I agree though he should have towed a line much better than he has.

I've assumed that his rehab was related to things he was photographed doing in a Vegas bathroom.

Pettine is S T U P I D.

Can you clarify why you think he's the dumb one? He didn't draft Manziel, owner Jimmy Haslem did- not sure if you're aware of the famous story that Haslem drafted Manziel simply because a homeless man told him to?

The Browns didn't even interview him at the combine- just brought him in for a private workout, that was it.

I think Pettine is greatly limited in what he can do.

In the space of 3 years, Haslem has fired 2 presidents, 2 GM's, and 2 HC's. Think that's probably where the problem is.

He has to be one of the worst thought out draft picks ever. He has an attitude problem which is never good for a QB and he may even be an alcoholic. This was known before he was drafted. Even without these issues, he certainly doesn't look like an NFL QB. He succeeds by playing a hectic scrambling style which is not a formula for long term success in the league. And he's maybe 6' flat with shoulders as broad as a typical 15 year old.

What a boneheaded decision by Cleveland.

I swear like 5 mins ago I read that manziel was gonna be the QB for the rest of the season. o_O

Why the hell is anyone surprised by this? It's obvious Pettine doesn't like Manziel at all. He only played him cause McCown was hurt. McCown comes back, so Johnny gets demoted.

He's about one more mistake from being "Johnny out of Football". I wonder if any team will even take a flier on him next year.

There has to be more, although it is the Browns

He went to rehab for alcohol and he obviously relapsed.

That's all the reason anyone would need to demote him.

The kid was just partying. Pettine has continuously and openly question Manziel's ability. Their game vs the Bengals for example, Manziel was moving out of the pocket and making plays, they interview Pettine at halftime and all he says is that he would like to have Manziel make plays from the pocket. And Manziel went to **** in the second half.
I know Manziel's decision making is foobar but the Browns did not have the setup for someone like him.
Disclaimer:1. I am an Aggie whose time overlapped Manziel's college career. 2. I have disliked Pettine ever since he weighed into Deflategate.
Clarification over.

Johnny Foosball has been under severe scrutiny RE his substance abuse problems and (more recently) serious allegations that he is a woman-beater. I've been part of an online accountability movement to help bring more needed attention to the latter. Several thousands of us signed the petition for the Browns to bench him until these more serious allegations receive their due focus.

Manziel will be a Cowboy very soon. The Browns should just cut him. This is stupid. I think Manziel can either flourish or burn to the ground in Dallas. He likes to party but has he committed any crime?
Actually, since you mention it, if you believe the initial account his girlfriend gave, then yes he has committed a crime.

I think this is a situation where Manziel swore to his bosses and coaches he would go totally clean and so they were beyond pissed when those videos came out.

Oooooh. Bad bad boy. How we have fallen as a society. Didn't Wells pitch a perfect game hammered? Michael Irvin was into powder, no? How about the guy who pitched a game on LSD? I can list many many more.

Manziel in the right system can play. That whole team is dysfunctional.

Manziel sucks.
Manziel just had an incident involving himself, a woman, a car, and drinking a bit earlier.
Manziel had gotten so bad that he got shipped off to rehab.

If Manziel hadn't been a first round pick, Manziel would be on the waiver wire already.

Um...if you're just off having to undergo a stint in rehab, and you probably made lots of assurances to the coaching staff, and you're already developed a rep for not working as hard as you should, and you've /just/ been given an opportunity to be the starting QB, it's probably not the smartest move to be caught partying on your bye weekend. I'm only surprised they didn't cut his ass outright.

This doesn't make sense; last night ESPN only promoted Manziel as the star in next week's game about a dozen or so times. How could he only be a 3rd stringer?
I think that was a very seriously edited video. They had to cut the Manziel vs Flacco when Joe tore up his knee.....Now it's McCown (??sp) vs....?????

I think Manziel is a perfect fit for arena football. He doesn't have the maturity or drive to make it as a qb in the nfl.

Manziel should look to the CFL. If he can control his off field shenanigans, he might be able to have a nice career that way.

From the second Pettine made comments about the availability of Rex Ryan playbooks before the Browns even played a snap I knew the organization was screwed for at least another 2 years.
