I guess I am one of the few who believes that Revis did not have a dominant season in 2014. To me, it seemed that Revis performed exceptionally well when the Pats didn't need him and he often have up the big play when they did need him.

2014 Revis 37-78 532 16 PD 2TDs 2 INTs 47.4 comp % 67.9 QB rating

2015 Malcolm 36-68 586 11 PD 5TDs 1 INT 53 comp % 100.5 QB rating

Some observations:
-Revis was excellent last year. He was not good in Q1 vs BAL but was fine after that. He was very good vs Indy and very good vs SEA.
-Malcolm has been steadily improving. He is better than his numbers. I'd like to see him make more plays on the ball. That comes with time. If he had 6 picks he'd be right with Revis' 2014
-Financially, the Pats absolfreakinglutely made the right decision NOT paying Revis.

@jeffphowe: I've got a very important announcement. Malcolm Butler did a better job on Sammy Watkins than Darrelle Revis did a week ago.

He's now taken Landry, Jackson, Beckham, and Watkins out of the game.

Is this a fair ranking of the CB1s in the BB era?

1. 2014 Revis
2. early 2000s Law
3. 2015 Butler
4. 2006-2007 Samuel
5. 2013 Talib

2008 Hobbs, 2009 Bodden, 2010 McCourty (zone corner), 2011 Arrington are the rest

Butler's a stud, and maybe besides Peterson & Norman how many other CBs can you definitely say are better than him? Haden, Grimes, Sherman, and Revis have all fallen off.

I'd definitely take a prime Ty Law over 2014 Revis.

Talib was the best CB in the NFL the first quarter or so of the season. He shutdown Julio Jones and held Jimmy Graham catchless.

Then he got smoked by Josh Gordon, punk'd by Steve Smith, and beat by Ty Hilton.

He's a great CB but he's never returned to that amazing early 2013 form.

Yes but he was still lingering that hip injury, the first 6 games (until he got injured against the Saints I think) he was playing lights out.

Watkins had 14 yards vs the jets.

It would've been more than that if Watkins didn't drop the first pass thrown to him. Blew past Revis and had separation on him deep down the field, ball hit him right in the hands then went straight to the ground.

Is anyone claiming that Butler is better than Revis last year? Butler has only played 10 games as a pro. Perhaps in a couple of years he might be develop into the player Revis was 5 years ago. If that happens, lucky us.

Regardless of what the statistics say, do you believe that Revis had a great season last year? I don't. He wasn't the shutdown corner that we expected and he seemed to make his mistakes in big spots.

My eyes told me that Revis had an excellent year last year and the numbers back it up.

He let up a few plays here and there. It happens.

Butler played well again last game and I was encouraged by the mistakes he made. He had 2 bad plays. One was the PI and hte other was biting on the underneath and allowing an over the top pass McCourty had to stop.

The DPIs are hard to deal with particular on underthrown balls where the WR slows down suddenly. It is something that calls for experience cause sometimes WRs slow down only to speed up. You just need to learn to read the situation. If you slow down and turn and then see the ball is not coming you are done. The WR has now got 5+ yards on you minimum over the top. Butler just needs to learn when to know it is real and turn to make a play.

The other play he messed up was when he bit on that under route. I understand trying to help but he simply tried to do too much. That is an easy one too fix. Cover your guy.

These are young player mistakes and I think they can easily be lessened and eliminated. He was making more of these early in the season. I expect them to continue to decrease.

Watkins had 14 yards vs the jets.

More to it than just yardage. Besides up until that final bills drive Watkins only had 15 yards, which was on that one handed grab he made.

I've only read the last few pages of this thread, but if anyone believes Butler is going to sign a deal for $6M/yr you are frigging nuts. He is without question one of the top few young CBs in the league. There is going to be a line of teams frothing at the mouth to give him huge money. If they offer $6mil per all they'll see is his agents back walking out the door and a lot of laughing.

I suppose he could prove to be a flash in the pan, but if he keeps playing like this they better be ready to fork over $10mil/yr. That's what guys who lock down Odell Beckham get paid. Especially guys early in their career.

I'm still hoping he gets extended this year, maybe during the playoffs but more likely during the offseason, for something around 5 years averaging 8 per, with a really good set of incentives, fully guaranteed for the first couple of years and just for injury on later years. I think he's smart enough to go for that, it's a good deal for both sides.

If he does not go for it he plays next year for less than 10% of that, and bears the risk of injury with no relief. Dion Lewis is a good example of the wisdom in taking an early extension even if it looks like leaving money on the table.

His agent is a hometown lawyer with only one NFL client: Malcolm Butler. He's not likely to get his head turned by maximizing bling potential, Butler knows who are the people who got him to where he is and gave him the chance to make the most of his talents. If he's smart he'll look at how much better $8,000,000 a year is than frying chicken at Popeye's not how much less it is than $10,000,000 a year later with the risk of injury during that year making it nada. I think he's smart enough to see that.

And the two catches were pretty meaningless. Sure, the 4th down conversion allowed them to keep the ball, but it was 2 yards past the sticks, and we know what happened on the last one.

Here's a question, probably for Miguel. The CBA says a UDFA rookie can be extended after the end of the regular season in their second year. So Butler could be extended before the end of the league year, which IIRC is March 1. If he renegotiated in the time between the end of the regular season and the end of the league year, would any part of the signing bonus be applied to the current year? The CBA says the new contract would be for next year, so would the signing bonus be applied starting then? Or would it be applied when the contract was signed? Another question would be when it would be paid, would it be paid when he signed the contract or when the contract went into effect?

Underlying thought is, another factor in extending Butler this off season is that he could be handed a really significant chunk of change in the signing bonus. Certainly would be lots more than he'll make this year and next put together (IIRC he is being paid $510,000 this season, his three year deal was reportedly $1.3million which I assume is rookie minimum).

I'm not Miguel, but I know that excess cap rolls forward into the next year so it may be all that meaningful what year things are applied to.

I think completion plays into the mix as well. Butler has matched up with Antonio Brown and Beckham Jr. this season. I cannot recall Revis matching up for an entire game on that level of a WR last season.

You take away Brown’s game in week 1, the long TD by Hurns, and ODBs long reception and Butler’s numbers look totally different. His progress from week 1 to now has been incredible, watching him vs. Brown in week 1 and ODB last week highlighted how far he has come.

Was just thinking, what's the list of Pats rookies who have gotten this good, this early with the Pats?

Brady
Gronk
Seymour

Is there anyone else the Pats have drafted/udfa signing that has made a bigger impact by season two?

DId Peter king really say something about in 3-4 years or now? he wouldn't trade Butler for Revis strait up? (Playing the role of the Pats

This is what he said: "Right now, for the next 3-4 years, I wouldn't trade Malcolm Butler straight up for Darrelle Revis."

He said that? wow! I respected Butler's hustle, but I never thought he could at times cover players like Watkins one on one. I am rewatching the game and I thought he was getting lots of help for most of the time, but that is not what i am seeing. The coaches are bring him along just superbly. This is a great story.
