As if I needed anymore reasons to like Welker.

Overall that was a nice piece, but I couldn't help thinking he was pimping Samuel's position too much. A seasoned reporter MIGHT think to question where all those "market offers" are coming from...BUT not Breer. That's the reason I will totally disregard ANYTHING Breer writes about the Samuel situation until it is ultimately resolved. He is CLEARLY bought and paid for, and will write only what the Samuel camp desires.

Yeah.

We’re hearing, pretty emphatically, that the corner has the offer he wants from “several teams.” And given that, he feels like signing the $7.79 million tender makes little sense.

Okay, so then why doesn't he sign one of those offers?

Answer: There aren't any offers. There are only teams telling him what he is worth. Believe me, as soon as an offer hits hits agents desk, he'll sign it.

One smart thing Breer says:

The Patriots don’t need a reminder of this. Chad Jackson pushed a hamstring injury last year, and it ended up putting a torpedo to his rookie year. Eugene Wilson, also, aggrevated a such ailment in Buffalo last season and wound up on IR for his troubles. Is Meriweather set back by missing minicamp? Well, of course. But it’s not worth risking losing him for a long period, at this time, for that experience.

Remember last year how some people kept screaming that Jackson had to get on the field. Remember all those "you can't make the club from the tub" comments? Well, how'e that work out. I'm hoping this year we don't get a bunch of people saying "Brandon needs to get on the field" and calling him a bust because he has a hammy issue. But it is probably a useless hope :(

The fact that other teams might be willing to give him the kind of salary he wants is irrelevant if they are not willing to give the proper compensation to the Patriots.

Yeah and these teams know that they aren't going to give up 2 firsts or maybe even 1 first round pick for him and the Pats won't let him go for any less. By offering him what he wants, this is their way of driving a wedge between AS and the Pats FO.

Maybe Breer shills for Samuel ... an' mebbe he don't.

But that is one HECK of a blog sequence.
Where else did you read this?:

"Moss did languish through the sprints, coming in last among skill players in just about every one, but from this view, there wasn’t a feeling of him dogging it elsewhere today. Here’s an example of what happens with him: On one play during the skeleton, Brady threw a bullet that was ticketed to go high over Moss’ head. He extended up, with a defender to each side of him, and simply snatched the ball out of the air without breaking stride. It didn’t draw many ooh’s and ahh’s, but that’s kinda the thing he does. He’s so natural that he can make what would be a spectacular catch for some look routine."

Ken,

Taken literally, that's a very serious charge.

Do you really mean it?

Absolutely outstanding blog! And he's making a point I've made about our DBs vs. the Colts.

I don't think Breer has a long enough track record to be clearly having an agenda, whether positive or negative. I have no clue if he's right - although it wouldn't surprise me if several teams are willing to pay Samuel - but there's no reason at this time to think that Breer isn't objective.

I agree. That page is brilliant stuff. Breer is clearly the football writer of record for the Herald. Have I been on vacation that long, or has he been writing this well for awhile now?

"Tory James had issues keeping up with any of the receivers, and got his lunch eaten in a big way by Jabar Gaffney yesterday. Chad Scott and Randall Gay are guys who, even in good years, have had trouble staying on the field. After that, you’re looking at a bunch of guys who’d have trouble making any team. Bottom line, the Patriots DBs have been lit on fire by the Colts in three games over the last two years. That problem could get worse if Samuel sticks to his guns."

Bingo. Without Samuel, the CB situation for the NEP is AFU. Yet no CB of value has been drafted since Hobbs in the 3rd round of 05. Mike Richardson does not count; he is a UDFA in 6th-rounder's clothing. At this point in their careers, Tory James and Chad Scott are better suited for FS. Wilson and Meriweather need to play CB instead.

"For all the talk about the new guys, there may not be a more important player on the roster than Maroney. He’s the only Patriot back with the real ability to carry the load over the long haul. And if he’s missing, it could trouble the passing game in the same way that passing game issues derailed the running game last year. Looking at the depth chart, Sammy Morris projects to be a better version of Patrick Pass, Heath Evans is a versatile fullback, Kevin Faulk’s a pure passing-down back. But those guys aren’t bellcows. Maroney is, and the team needs him to be. So it’s important to get him healthy and put him in position to post the 1,400-yard season he’s capable of."

Why is Chris Brown still unsigned?
Why was Sammy Morris signed instead of Justin Griffith?
Why was Justice Hairston drafted instead of DeShawn Wynn?
For that matter, why was Cedric Cobbs drafted instead of Michael Turner?
Inquiring minds want to know.

You've been on vacation :)

His Point After blog on the Monday after gameday was usually even better than you just read . . . seriously.

From Pasquarelli :

"• Morris impresses Pats: New England may continue to monitor the status of former Tennessee Titans tailback Chris Brown, arguably the best player still available at the position, and a guy who would provide the Pats a viable replacement to the departed Corey Dillon as the backup to starter Laurence Maroney. But this week's minicamp may have convinced some Pats officials that the roster is a little better off at tailback than originally thought. Journeyman Sammy Morris, signed as an unrestricted free agent this spring, had a very productive three days, catching the ball well and actually displaying more versatility than Dillon had."

Griffith is a FB with 81 career carries. Nice average aside, he's not close to a solution.

Perhaps not, but I would sleep better if there were an experienced (or, in the case of Griffith, a potential) load-carrier on the 53 by Opening Day. Chris Brown seems like a no-brainer; he must have some health issue, right?

Breer's stuff is outstanding-he makes everything understandable and seems to have a keen eye for detail. Great in depth analysis from him all throughout camp. I've got him bookmarked right up there with Reiss news.:)
This kid is a coup for the Herald and for us fans. He may have gone out on a bit of a limb as far as getting into Samuel's offer situation but I see it more as part of his analysis re some of Asante's statements rather than any particular bias, unless his bias is about needing Asante. We'll be ok without him but we'll be better with him. Either way,Breer's an excellent read.

I'm fine with Morris and, in a pinch, even Faulk. Although we don't want to, with the receivers (including TE) and defense we have I honestly think we could run the ball 10 times a game and win most of them. So having, say, Morris as our top RB if Maroney gets hurt really doesn't bother me much.

Nothing wrong with those options, except that I really, really don't want to see Brady throw 35+ times a game, every game; esp. if he begins to feel obligated to take 7-step drops and wait for Moss and Stallworth to go deep.

First of all, thanks for posting this. It reminds us just how good good writing with insight by a knowlegeable observer can be. Gives Reiss a run for his money and raises the bar for everyone.

I think he nailed the issues and the potential of the 2007 Patriots. The only thing I'd quibble with is Breer's tanking on the Samuel issue. He might have "offers," but none of those offers comes with a first round pick, so it's not a market offer. It's a wish. That said, Breer is right IMO that this is the achilles heel of what should be one of the best teams to take the field in several years. I'm afraid tho, that it's beginning to look like both sides are digging in and that a deal won't get done.

He's also spot-on about Maroney. We need to wish him to health. I'm sure we'll "make do" as always if one player isn't able to give what we need, but we've gotten used to a number one runner with Dillon over the past few years and we need Maroney to be healthy and tearing it up from week one.

Otherwise, a lot of very insightful stuff as on AT. Also, between Breer and Reiss I'm liking more and more of what I hear about Welker, and Moss seems like a true all Pro who is going to make a big impact.

Thanks again.
