Revis and Welker keeping their heads on a swivel - Week 11

If Welker had lasted on the street for one week longer, do you think he'd be on the Pats now in wake of the Edelman injury?

As insurance to Dola more than anything of course

The best move Bill made this off season was NOT signing Revis.

...while whipping the Jets into enough of a lather to get them to sign up for this:
Signed a five-year, $70 million contract. The deal contains $39 million guaranteed, including a $2 million signing bonus. 2015: $16 million, 2016: $17 million, 2017: $13 million (+ $2 million roster bonus), 2018-2019: $10 million (+ $1 million option bonus

jets fans were so happy when they signed revis.
they made it seem like he was the missing piece. they have so many holes...qb, ol, lb, secondary stinks.
they have a nice d-line though, but that wins you nadda when the rest of your team is full of garbage players.
bowles isn't a head coach either. just stands there calling defensive plays. never speaks to the offensive players...Bill is so much better

If teams can get a faster receiver matched up in man coverage, teams are targeting Revis this year, something that never happened a couple of years ago. The Ravens and the Seahawks didn't shy away from Revis in the playoffs last year. I wonder if he'll make the transition to safety like Charles Woodson.

He could be very successful. good tackler and hes not afraid to do it

Bummed to see Revis is losing it already. Even if some want to say he showed signs of losing a step last year, he was still the best corner in the game from 2009-2012, and with us. But now hes on the wrong side of 30. I'll admit that I did not think he would regress this much, not even sure hes a top 5 corner anymore. Still one of my favorite all time players and the best since deion.

Interesting to watch ex-Pat Darrelle Revis looking old and getting burned and then suffering a concussion on one channel while Wes Welker was catching two passes in four targets for the Rams. Both lost. Now, both guys have to be careful to avoid recurrent head injuries.

I'm definitely rooting for Welker to stay healthy and have a good comeback. I'm bummed to see Revis in a Jets uniform, but don't want to watch him with the shadow of head injuries looming all the time.

The NFL has to stay on top of this and keep looking for ways for these players to reduce the risk of these head injuries. Keenum should have been yanked by the officials at the end of the Rams game. He was in la-la land when he got stripped to set up the Ratbirds winning FG. The concussion system needs tightening and the helmet technology has to improve.

Best of luck to both guys.
when i ll see Revis being smacked in the head, i belive that he has conussion, otherwise i think he get burned and with no safety near he could not blame safety so he blame on potential injury. Remember Jordy nelson and Revis blame Mccourty. Or with Revis words: He has a history of doing that.
Karma is a *****.

Remember the Patriots adage about how it is better to let an older player go a year early rather than a year late???

$39 million of which is fully guaranteed all in the first three years. This and the contract Miami gave Suh, and the Bills 140 million dollar defensive line, should help keep the Pat's on top of ge AFC East for a while.

That's the ironic thing. The more desperate these other AFCE teams get in trying to catch the Patriots, the more money they recklessly throw around at 'star' free agents. And the more they recklessly spend, the less likely it is that they'll catch the Patriots

Send your concern to Jeff "I'm on the Competition Committee" Fisher.

... along with copies to Marvin Lewis, Ozzie Newsome and Mike Triplin

Anyone got a gif of Welker's drop just before the StL turnover?

I was watching the Red Zone, and this drop had reminisces of of the Superbowl loss. SAME EXACT DROP!

I am glad they both played here. I was wicked pissed when Wes left but also believe that there were some issues between Wes & the HC.
I wish Wes the very best in life, as he was along serving Patriot. Seriously worried about his health.
Revis I don't care about or root for his demise and I have no ill will towards him but am glad we did not gut this team's future ability to retain and acquire several players as his play declines however slightly. I only wish we had a player of his caliber instead of Melvin tonight.

Can't agree. While he may not be the player he once was, BB would have played to his strengths. While I agree that BB was smart not to pay him the $$ he wanted, if they could have reached a reasonable deal, I would have welcomed him back. We are going into this game tonight shaky at corner with Coleman out.

That play yesterday just reminded me of the Jordy Nelson play last year. Revis was and is a great cover guy, but once he gets in chase mode there are faster receivers out there.

That is precisely why these teams that dive in on free agents rarely have the depth to compete . A couple of key injuries and their looking at guys making the minimum to step into a major void. The Patriots have quality depth at pretty much every position that consists of a solid - not great - but solid veteran, and rookie or 2nd year man close behind.

The receiving corps is a great example - Dobson, Slater, Harper and Martin are a capable, not great group of backups to Edelman, LaFell, and Amendola. The Pats survived LaFell's absence and will do fine until Edelman gets back. If you have all your money tied up in a guy like AJ Green or Dez Bryant - both in the $14M to $15M range or the equivalent of LaFell, Amendola and Edelman combined - it's very hard to pay your receiver group enough money to have six or seven quality players.

Same was true with Revis' $16M this year and $39M guarantee as he gets older.

Edit: What is there to disagree with about this post?

I dont have the gif but it was the same EXACT pass he dropped that cost us a superbowl.

Well, in a perfect world Mevis would have been available for another year for some figure that was not ridiculous. However in the real world that we live in he wasn't so the whole thing is completely moot.

He was not available for something even remotely reasonable. His option year cap charge was insane and the Jets were desperate to get him back. So not signing him for either of the two options was a smart move. You cant disagree with it by coming up with make believe hypoteetical scenarios. If there was a scenario avail to BB to get Mevis for a reasonable number and BB did not do it - then you would be able to disagree.

Its like saying that you disagree that he did not sign Larry Fitzgerald because if there was a way to do it cheaply he should have.

Makes no sense.

the quote I was responding to said the best thing BB did this offseason was not resign Revis, in a thread dedicated to the fact he's lost a step. I won't tell you you can't disagree, so please don't tell me I can't disagree.

That's a sh.tload of money for a safety. Revis was paid to be a lockdown corner for at least the more years, he could turn himself into an all pro safety imo but that kind of money is huge.

Mevi$ could have stayed signed a reasonable contract on his way to possible a 2nd Ring but no I would rather get QB $$$$ than play for proven winner. We all see the logical reasons there Mevi$.

To spend a fortune on pair of post-30 corners so long before your offense is ready, and with no real QB, is really dumb.
