Kraft, et al, named in DFS class action suit

The context for all of this is driven by one single fact: the NFL owners and players are joined at the hip toward the goal of increasing revenue from NFL football as much as possible. They can and will compete and whine about how that total revenue is split up, but that's just the infighting that takes place after the main event is over.

FF offers a massive opportunity to keep ad revenues for the NFL going up, and up, and up, as it keeps those fans of losing teams interested all the way through the season.

NFL Redzone is a fantastic start-up business that will end up being watched by more fans that the actual full games are.

This is where NFL football is headed. And the players are delighted, because they will get a slice of it, and that will increase their income.

I believe the reason Kraft and Jones are being sued is because of their equity positions, not because of their ads.

Would be devasting if fantasy football got shut down for good and we didn't have to hear about it. Just devasting :D.

I think we have just passed the high point for the NFL and it will be down hill from here. DFS kept people interested in the truly horrible games this year. You turn on NFL network and it seems like there is constant scrolls of fantasy players points and there were tens of millions of dollars in DSF comercials. You watch a game other than the Patriots and it might as well be pee wee football given the unprofessional play and coaching. There hasn't been a meaningful new QB who takes the big step and stays there in a long time. The game is becoming trashy with folks like Hardy as the NFL tries and tear down Brady to placate the woman beaters in the league who can't seem to understand why guys like Brady don't get in trouble.

Seven high school players have died this year from hits on the field and a big budget movie about the NFL hiding concussions and screwing the players is due out in a week. The number and quality of new players in the pipeline is not looking good. Most people I know would rather sit at home and watch than pay to go and I admit that with a slate like tomorrow, there is a good chance I will pass on TV other than perhaps the CNN report on rape at college which will talk about the 1st draft pick in the 2015 draft being an accused rapist Jameis Winston Is Threatening To Sue CNN To Prevent Airing Of College Rape Documentary

I think quite a few people like Kraft, Goodell and Jones were banking on daily fantasy sports taking the NFL to the next level but it is gambling. I think Kraft laid down to Goodell to protect his FanDuel investment which he believed had a big chance of making him boat loads of cash far beyond the $1M fine and draft picks would cost him. My guess is now Kraft won't have either and will be facing years in court.

I think that ten years from now we will look back at this insane off season and then the massive $ spent on Fan Duel and Draft Kings advertising and see it as the pivot point. It is Heavy Weight Boxing under Don King right now and it is going down, not out but down.

I've never understood how you can be a real football fan and like fantasy football. The two seem mutually exclusive. It's the ultimate TEAM game and FF runs contrary to that. None of the FF people I've ever known have a favorite team they live and die by. I want to throttle people who say things like, "Well, the Patriots lost but at least my fantasy guy [from the opposing team] did well."
I'm a rabid pats fan but I also like fantasy football. I love the sport of football enough that I can enjoy watching a non-patriots game too.

The only thing I disagree with is your suggestion that "the number and quality of players in the pipeline is not looking good." If anything dies harder than the golden-goose NFL it will be the college game. As long as big-time NCAA football exists there will be a lucrative and popular NFL.

Have tried fantasy football a couple of times and was not all that enthused about it, but some really like it so it is their choice..

IMO it is pretty much like spending time in front a slot machine, except you never have to leave home..

These guys have made boatloads of money...

Agree. I've been finding myself thinking this a lot more lately.

I saw something like 1% of all the fantasy players win 90% of the money. Plus once you add to the fact that employees of one were using their inside knowledge (of what layers were and weren't being played) to win on the other site. It may have jumped the (left) shark.

It's not illegal gambling, but it's a fools errand if you think you are ever going to win any money at it. Unles you are a MIT guy.

You have to think that all the sports leagues who have quickly jumped into bed with these sites, might be regretting it.
That depends who you ask. That's the issue that is arising. They found a loophole, but it's not regulated. I personally think it is illegal as it is now. I've been saying that since they stated bombarding us with advertisements. "they're going to push it to the limit, and make as much money as possible , before they get shut down".

Just like Online Poker did.

You don't see those commercials any more, do you?

The DFS, aren't making money given what they spent on advertising, they are buying players. That is not a bad strategy at all if they were allowed to continue because you only have a very limited time to build when something starts. Once you are the leader in an established market it is very tough for someone new to come in. Its like trying to start a search engine now vs in 1996.Jones and Kraft etc... put up big money to grow these now because there is no tomorrow when things explode like this. If DFS were legal these companies could end up with valuations between $5- $20 billion each. Dumping $200m on advertising to get there is a great investment if DFS were legal. DFS is gambling though and my guess is they will crash and burn in a mountain of law suits and their investments will be lost and they will be tied up in court for a while.
