Football motivation: Harbaugh vs. Belichick (merged)

Gonzalez played in 14 Pro Bowls – he loved playing when it was in Hawaii. Things were always so relaxing there, so fun. One year, Belichick was his coach . . .

On the opening kickoff, Gonzalez was out on special teams . . . and he went through the motions and didn’t block anybody. Gonzalez jogged happily to the sidelines.

“Why don’t you (bleeping) block somebody Gonzalez,” Belichick grumbled as Gonzalez jogged by. . . .

Gonzalez felt himself fuming. This was how the great Bill Belichick treated people? They were at the Pro Bowl, for crying out loud. This was Hawaii, for crying out loud. . . . And this was what he gets? To have the game’s most famous coach swear at him for not blocking on special teams in an exhibition game?

Oh, yes, he was mad – who did this guy think he was? Gonzalez played football the right way. He didn’t deserve this. He stewed on the sideline, furious. And then it was time to go back on the field for another kickoff, another special teams moment, and the ball was kicked. Gonzalez locked in on a guy running down the field. “Why don’t you (bleeping) block somebody?” Sure, he heard it again. OK coach, fine, check out this block.

And Gonzalez absolutely mashed the defender, took him completely out of the play.

Then Gonzalez walked over to the sideline, and you better believe he walked right by Belichick, wanted to see the grimace wiped right off the man’s face. But Belichick showed no signs of even noticing him. He was looking out on the field, seemingly oblivious to Gonzalez’s presence. So Gonzalez kept walking. And as he was a few steps away, he heard Bill Belichick say this:

“Nice block, Gonzalez.”

He looked back, and there was no hint of a smile on Belichick’s face. Bill Belichick just kept looking at the field, and in that moment Tony Gonzalez understood. The man had coached him into blocking on special teams in the Pro Bowl.

BB can do that kind of thing because he's BB. BB's opinion makes Hall of Famers feel inadequate. Any other coach aside from Lombardi, Walsh, Noll or Brown will look like a weirdo.

Had forgotten this "Bill Belichikism".. Meanwhile in Baltimore this 2-7 team has been crapping the bed after the Pats provided a blueprint on how to beat them..

Meanwhile in Indianapolis(4 - 5) Drug addled Irsay and his group of clowns proudly display participation banners..

Karma is a f..ing bytch.. keep putting up stickers Harbaugh like a second grade teacher does..

Talk about the reek of desperation.

Never mind how ridiculous and juvenile this is, imagine how the players must feel. They all probably feel they're suddenly back in 3rd grade.

Yep. Mangini learned at Belichick's knee, then set out on his own as a young whelp and tried to act like BB. It was not well received.

And on the flip side, different demeanors can work for a coach. Pat Summerall once wrote about his experience playing both offense & defense for the Giants when Vince Lombardi was the OC and Tom Landry the DC. The two coaches' personalities and styles of presentation were completely opposite. What they had in common was that they were meticulous, demanding and great teachers.

But stickers...nah.

I think Jim Harbaugh considered that idea for his players and thought it might have been too juvenile for them. I wonder who told john this might be a good idea.

Perhaps John can turn this into good PR by having a local elementary school teacher give out the stickers during a Monday or Tuesday award ceremony.

Juvenile is the NYJFL these days. Whining for flags, crying about 'running up the score', baseless accusations, participation banners. I expect these stickers to catch on. Players will be so proud of their haul of stickers that they will want to display them more publicly. They will be marketed by the league and appear on helmets soon [licensed versions only, of course]. Certain players might even finagle a game stoppage to have the application of a record Nth sticker applied to his helmet in view of adoring fans.

My high school football team did this for solid plays or good practices. As a third string bench warmer you are Damn right I am proud as hell of the one sticker I ever got reading a pulling guard ripping under him and blowing up the RB in the back field. This is professional atheletes who got 100 of those back in high school? Oh....yeah....who gives a sh$%
