What do we do with Jimmy G going forward?

Are you kidding?

Cassel went 11-5 in 2008 and it took him AND Mike Vrabel to get ONE (1) 2nd round pick.

NE franchised Cassel in order to get some compensation instead of nothing. The reality then was that NE possessed minimum leverage given the league understanding that NE would never keep that franchise contract for a backup. Getting a high #2 and unloading 2 major contracts (combined $19 mill) for players that had zero future on the roster was a deal they were comfortable with. There is also a timing component involved with this transaction. NE clearly the decks very early (March) with this trade and one could assume NE valued cleared cap space prior to FA more than clogging up their available cap into the summer months and squeezing a higher pick from a desperate team.....a pick that would be drafted a year later. And that 2009 draft, NE avoided the first round like the plague.....trading out and not using the huge excess of picks that year (4 second rounders) to move up.
Eff Clay Mathews :)....We want Chung, Brace, Butler........call the jeweler!!!

Here's a Wikipedia summary of the 2009 Pats........this was clearly a transition year across the board....coaching staff, wobbly vets, contracts....all cleared out.

Trade him for a first round player.

nothing............you keep the guy until he becomes too expensive for the job he serves

garoppolo hasn't shown much except for the apparent potential.

The point was what the Patriots received in return for Cassel.

They had to throw in Vrabel and they only got ONE 2nd round pick.

I was responding to a poster who thinks the Pats could get TWO 2nd round picks for a backup QB who hasn't gone 11-5 in the NFL.....and with no Vrabel throw in.

And you're missing mine as well.

Cassel's draft pick value was depressed because of the money he was owed. Do you think the Pats couldn't have gotten a first for him if they somehow has him under contract for, say, $3M for 2009?

Vrable was on his last legs & that was the 2nd pick in the 2nd round.

The Texans gave 2nd round picks in 2007 & 2008 for Schaub.

You know the game & I respect your opinion. Please keep in mind that there is no QB's in this draft that they consider "Franchise type" top of the draft selections.

I do not think that it is a stretch to think that a team like Houston would give up a couple of 2nd round picks to get a QB considering this years QB draft class.

Maybe your right, but what about a 2nd in 2016 & 2017? I could see that happening.

It could also be a player for a player.
I could see two second rounders, probably still not likely but it might happen if Jimmy gets some snaps this season. I know we had the shady trade this off season but player for player trades almost never happen in the nfl.

Complaints about passing on Matthews still exist? I thought those went extinct years ago. :)

Joe, if a weak franchise that drafts high was willing to give us two 2nd rounders for Jimmy, I'd take it in a heartbeat. I just don't think that's a possibility right now. But I have to tip my hat to you for the Schaub example.

I didn't predict one more year... I said I wd be happy with one. Hey, he's very highly motivated this year, so we can't factor that in as a norm--and all thee extra work may even take away from his longevity.

He's Tom Brady. Yes we can take that as a norm.

EVERY back-up QB has more value in a trade than as a clipboard holder until there's an injury...

Yes.

But also, recent trades for backup QBs have been failures for the teams acquiring the guy, so I doubt Jimmy G has much trade value.

If circumstances causes him to actually play, his trade value might go up afterwards. That was the Cassell situation.

Oh god it's happening again. AGAIN?! AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????

Keep Garp on the roster until his contract runs out and then decide what to do. 38 year old QB...Patriots need a viable backup. If you want to trade him mid-season, that would mean that the Patriots kept 3 QBs on the roster. Do we really want to see 3 QBs on the roster? I don't. Could trade him in the offseason, but again....that leaves the Patriots looking for a backup.

Maybe they draft a guy in the second round next year and that makes Garp tradable, but I wouldn't expect much for him.

And yet someone asked this offseason about his price.

While we're on the subject
Exactly.

The poster had been posting that the Patriots could get TWO 2nd round picks for Jimmy G, when Cassel (who had 11 more NFL wins than Jimmy G. has at this point) and Vrabel got only ONE.

How a pick turns out is just a gamble. Just ask the 49ers and Giovanni Carmazzi or whatever vs. #199 that year.......

But a draft pick position has a numerical value.
The numerical value is a great point. I used a draft chart to equate what I thought the Patriots compensation should have been in the Revis tampering charges we filed vs. previous rulings by the NYJLO.

Unfortunately I didn't take into account the bias towards this orginization and region that exists at 345 Park Ave. and the undermining the overwhelming number of former Jet flunkies that are allowed to command the higheat ranking positions in that cabal.

End result: Instead of being forced to swap picks with the team tampered with like with in the well publicized cases of the 49ers v Bears over Lance Briggs and the Cunningham remarks leading to the Lions v Chiefs decision, Woody Johnson was allowed to search his couch for change as punishment.

$100 grand. What an absolute joke and abomination. A complete and absolute slap in the face over the Revis scenario. Do you know where that $100 grand went to?

I can guarantee you not one red cent went to a family with a child battling cancer, not unless they were part of the Jet family.

Disgusting.

Excuse me for the rant shmessy. If we were able to nab a 5 with no strings attatched for Jimmy G. I'd be all for it.

Truthfully, I say let him stay here for his rookie deal as long as Tom is healthy and the coaching staff trusts him.

Cassel got lucky and parlayed a nice little career. Good for him. Hoyer has had success as well. Mallet needed to grow up. He didn't. Rohan Davey had spirit but not the talent to match. O'Connell is dead to me. He went to the Jets.

To be fair he was claimed off waivers by Detroit and traded to the JEST.

My position on this issue is simple.

You trade Jimmy G for a low 1st or two 2nds if....

BB determines TB12 can play at an elite level in 2016.
Can find an excellent developmental QB in the draft.
Bring in a functional/find a veteran QB.

I'd really like to see them get a top-end CB and a baller in the offensive backfield.

I don't get why anyone would be so motivated to get a 5th rounder for Jimmy G.

Seriously, do people want NO BACKUP for Brady??????

There is a REASON why BB spent a 2nd round pick on the kid. Maybe it is important to have a credible contingency plan in place if Brady gets hurt.

It's called insurance on a very valuable position. Methinks there are alot of people here who have FEMA on speed dial. :D

I just wish our offense ran the ball a bit more to prolong Brady's shelf life(i.e rotator cuff). The guy is averaging 40-50 attempts per game. If Brady wants to play 3-4 more years, Pats may need to adopt a slightly different offensive approach with more emphasis on the run game, kind of like Denver in the late 90s when with Terrell Davis.
