What do we do with Jimmy G going forward?

It's a mistake to think that we can likely move on or reload at the QB position. When Brady leaves look for BB to leave as well - so all bets are off. The JAG/BB era is not likely to ever happen IMHO.

Maybe your right, but what about a 2nd in 2016 & 2017? I could see that happening.

It could also be a player for a player.

Are you kidding?

Cassel went 11-5 in 2008 and it took him AND Mike Vrabel to get ONE (1) 2nd round pick.

BB is no jock sniffer.

He will go when he wants to go. Not as Brady's valet.

If Brady's career end coincides with BB's timing, then fine. But if he still wants to caoch, he won't be afraid to stay around after Brady - - he may even look at it as a challenge to prove for his legacy. All one has to do is look at the YOUNG TALENT this franchise has stocked on the D . I challenge anyone on this board to show one team in the NFL with as many top-flight talent under 26 years of age. There is more than one way to win a SB. The Ravens/Giants/Bucaneers all won SB's this century with mediocre QBs and devastating Defenses.

One thing the general public doesn't know about BB (but most people here do) is that he is an obsessive NFL historian. That would mean alot to him.

Brady could suffer a career-ending injury in the preseason next year for all we know.

If Belichick thinks Garoppolo is the guy, **** no, you don't trade him. In 3, 4 years, this defense will be one of the very best in the league. Garoppolo's in line to drive a Ferrari, I doubt he's in any hurry to play for a dogshit team.

In other words, this thread's about 2 years premature, IMO.
I agree that the Pats will be great in 4 years still, but it is a football eternity. Is there a reason you are confident in the Defense in that future time frame? I mean we have Jones, Hightower, and Collins now... We may not have one of them in 3 to 4 years. Alot of other players will have aged... Edleman will not be the Edleman we know now also. If the argument is that the Pats/Belichick will always build great teams and that is why they will be a strong defense in 3 to 4 years I can buy that I guess. I am just curious if there is a reason you have for thinking it beyond that. (Like do you foresee a core group being together long term on D kind of like Law, McGuinness, Bruschi, etc did)

...if you're an ADHD owner/GM like Jerruh or Snyder.

Let's all get our popcorn and watch the "all-in" Denver Broncos who have won zilch rings during John Elways wizardry.

In fact, I implore everyone to closely watch Brock Osweiler the next few weeks and ponder what life looks like when your team doesn't give a crap about who is backing up the star QB.

Shoukl be an interesting story to follow......

Can we convert JAG into a receiver? It only took four years to convert out latest college QB into one.

Let him develop, you never know what the future holds. Kid has got a lot of potential. It only takes one hit, and he's playing meaningful snaps.

...and both times this happened during the BB era: Superbowl win and 11-5. Not bad.

My view on Jimmy G is this. It is all about next year. If next year Brady is playing well then you look to trade him before the deadline (if you get good value)

The Broncos drafted Brock Osweiler in the 2nd round in 2012. How is that not giving a crap about a backup QB?

The only way this is a realistic conversation is if Josh mcD and caserio leave together for Detroit this offseason.

They will get out from under Calvin and staffords contracts, and want to start fresh with a QB they can trust.

Outside of that, there isn't any other situation where JimmyG could possibly be valued at the price the Pats would be willing to give him up for.

Id rather keep our Steve Young.

Not directly comparable. Cassel had a guaranteed $14.6M salary that was hurting the Pats cap.

The morning of the Week 17 game against the Bills last year, Caserio signed a contract with the Pats that keeps him here through the year 2020. Of course, he can leave if another team offers him a step-up promotion position.

The point was what the Patriots received in return for Cassel.

They had to throw in Vrabel and they only got ONE 2nd round pick.

I was responding to a poster who thinks the Pats could get TWO 2nd round picks for a backup QB who hasn't gone 11-5 in the NFL.....and with no Vrabel throw in.

The pick we got for that trade is currently on the roster and a significant contributer.

Patrick Chung.

Exactly.

The poster had been posting that the Patriots could get TWO 2nd round picks for Jimmy G, when Cassel (who had 11 more NFL wins than Jimmy G. has at this point) and Vrabel got only ONE.

How a pick turns out is just a gamble. Just ask the 49ers and Giovanni Carmazzi or whatever vs. #199 that year.......

But a draft pick position has a numerical value.

Many of us myself included was under the illusion we would get top picks for Mallett.
So I have no expectations, that being said I look around at the Cleveland Browns the Niners, Houston, and say is it impossible?

Well that's never going to happen so having into him will be easy. Jimmy has played 3 quarters in the nfl, you could not get a first for him

That was kind of my point. Short of a no way in hell do I turn that down deal JG is not going anywhere. That said I do think you could get a first for him. He was taken in the second and has had two years behind the GOAT while showing promise in the little preseason action we have seen. Teams are starving for QB's with promise and make stupid trades all the time.

Which is why I mentioned Detroit, who has already cleaned out their front office.
