Malcolm Butler

Aside from Revis, Butler is the best corner we've had since 2006. The only other player close is Leigh Bodden that one year.

Nice post. I don't think Butler would take those contract numbers though. Probably $8MM per year is the least you get away with an extension like that. Also I don't think we can talk numbers with Butler at all until after his third season.
I'd put Malcolm ahead of Bodden and behind 06 Asante...but gaining very fast. He's already a better tackler. Needs to grab some INTs

Butler's rise in perception reminds me of Sherman in his 2nd season in 2012.

Butler is on the right team with the right coaches. He's developing into a fine young man whose play on the field matches his temperment off the filed. Whatever you're doing Malcolm, don't stop! :D

Butler's awesome. Even when he's beat he's not burned. He's ****ing legit.

It continues to be one of my favorite storylines of this season that the super bowl hero can actually play corner. This isn't Larry Brown part 2. (Old guy reference)

I initially thought Malcolm got burned on the NYG first play of the game. In part, this is because I was distracted with the game thread, whilst the game was being played. However, as other posters and several Boston sporting pages pointed out, he was blocked/screened by Devin McCourty. And I do remember some posters calling this out, as well. After we look past that play, MB was brilliant through and through in that last win. :D

Even thought OBJ plays bigger than his size I'm interested in seeing how Butler matches up against a tall receiver like Sammy Watkins or Demayrius Thomas.

ESPN stats gave Butler 3 PD yesterday. I thought I counted 4 or maybe even 5.

Beckham had four catches. Even if ESPN is right and Butler only broke up three, knocking down 3 on a receiver who only caught 4 passes all night seems pretty good. Especially since I seem to recall at least one catch when the Pats were in zone and Butler wasn't responsible for Beckham.

However, it's not just about the AMOUNT of plays that matter. It oft comes down to the SITUATION.

And last year's SB win is an absolute perfect example. :D

Suppose he had made every play, except that one? o_O

And I'm not discounting making as many plays as possible- just highlighting the qualitative effect and how certain plays affect a game more than the little ones, if I may call them that.

Please be reminded that Revis makes less plays because opposing teams don't throw on him as much. And this, of course, has a big effect on the game/strategy, as has been discussed in the past.

Or Butler pulls a Dion Lewis and gives them a team friendly deal because they are the ones the took a chance on him
I think there is a really really good chance that would happen. They not only took a chance on him, they showed a lot of faith in him last February and again this year. They've treated him right all along, there's a good chance he'll repay that with a decent hometown discount.

Yeah, I love McCourty and I'm one of his biggest defenders, but he made one of the worst plays I've ever seen by a FS there. He basically sprung Beckham singlehandedly. If he does his job there, it's a 10-15 yard gain. If he's not on the field at all, it's probably a ~25 yard gain.

Butler played a *really* good game on Sunday. The TD wasn't on him and the PI was bogus. With serviceable safety play on that TD, Beckham's final stat line against him ends up being something in the neighborhood of 4/30 on 12 targets.

The more recognition butler gets the less he will be thrown at and the more potent our defense can be if we can eliminate one side of the field. So do your job as a patriot supporter and spread the word, butler is a shutdown corner.

Ya bad play but where the ball came down screwed him. Beckham had to turn in to catch it which put him in position to cut inside once he got it. If that ball was thrown slightly further McCourty which was what he was anticipating he tackles him.

He needs a couple more high profile INTs for people to stop throwing at him.

There may be some truth to this.

With that said he is manned up on WR1 so they will throw at him anyway.

I don't know.

After that ludicrous PI call in the Giants game, he got reputation-style non-calls the rest of the game. Beckham couldn't breathe.

I think there are plenty of folks around the league who already see what he's doing. How would you like to be the OC studying film on Butler v Beckham and trying to decide how to attack him? I think the obvious answer is Ryan and Coleman get to see more passes thrown their way than Butler does.

Batting down passes and tight coverage is one thing. Making a QB pay dearly with a pick is another.

UDFA's can't sign an extension until after their 3rd season. We have Malcolm for one more year on the cheap. Then, he will get his well-deserved new contract.

I've always been of the opinion that perception, especially in pro sports, counts for a lot. I'm glad players on D are being spoken about in the media. It will add to the intimidation factor of not only facing Brady, but a host of others.

Any one here get that Butler Jersey yet!?

If we'd kept our cast of CBs from last year, I wonder where Butler would be right now. Opposite Revid and replacing Browner against quicker receivers? Starting in the slot over Arrington? Hard to believe he was barely an afterthought up until that incredible second half in the SB.

The mental toughness butler showed after that first big play is what separates the good from the great. There is no pff formula or stat that measures that competiviness or resilience. This guy is special.
No nfl player quits because of a bad play. He made plays he doesn't have a special mental characteristic.
But what separates good from great is not allowing the 87 yard td.
