I thought Mayo was a difference maker in the second half on Sunday. He marshalled the D very well and was far more involved than he has been recently.

Could it be that his recent lack of form and starts is down to not being 100% sharp after two consecutive long, long injury lay outs and that finally he's starting to get back to somewhere approaching his old self? Even if he's still not firing on all cylinders. There's been plenty of criticism of his recent performances, despite his history of being a tackling machine and leader of our defense, so credit where it's due.

Other much maligned players who have really stepped up recently are Logan Ryan and Patrick Chung. And although he's hardly been used, Aaron Dobson has done everything asked of him when involved. I know the mounting injuries are frustrating but I think we've got really solid, underrated depth and we'll get through this just fine.

not sure how good or bad he did, but I did like seeing Mayo in there more. Hopefully, he is getting rid of all that rust and is 100% healed

When I saw him, he was in the right spot and doing his job well. I saw him in coverage a couple times and he looked pretty good. I was wondering the same thing too, if perhaps he was finally rounding into form. Would be great if so.

Freeney's poor play gave Mayo the opportunity for more reps and he took advantage. I don't know why Freeney's struggled as bad as he did with both coverage and tackling. There were a couple missed open field tackles that were downright embarrassing.

Always good to see Jerod Mayo playing well. If he can play to 75% of 2012 form the D is better for it.

Love the guy and hope for the best, but the one time I really noticed him it was because he tackled a guy and it seemed like it was in slow motion. But maybe he's on the upswing, that would be terrific.

Yea. I gotta think it takes a super long time to recover from a torn patella tendon.

I don't the Jerod is washed up...yet.

there is a reason BB still has him around. i simply don't get the people who said mayo should be cut.

In the first 4 weeks of 2014, Mayo was the only bright spot on our entire team. He was playing really, really well before that knee injury. Having Collins and Hightower around make Mayo better. Now that he's getting back to game shape I expect good things!

I guess Jamie Collins made Freeney look alot better than he actually is...cannot say the same about Mayo.;):p

I don't think there's been much of that, more just that he wouldn't be here next year probably at this level.

Let's remember a patellar tendon injury is worse than an ACL tear. I think we need to give him one more season to see if he's able to come back to full strength.

they just shelved victor cruz for the rest of the season after he had the same injury. also it ended rodney harrison's career.

Victor Cruz suffered the same injury around the same time, and he just got IRed again. When it's all said and done, he will have lost basically two years to his injury. Patellar tendons are serious injuries - most players never fully recover. Mayo's been a great Pat since '08, but unfortunately it wasn't hard to see this coming. From the moment it was confirmed as a torn patellar tendon, I figured this (he becomes a JAG, if he returns to the field at all) was a too-likely outcome.

It sucks, but just being on the field at all is a small victory with an injury this severe. The silver lining here is that there's a good chance he'll get a lot closer to his old level next year, when he's one more year removed from the injury. I doubt he'll be a Patriot anymore at that point, but still rooting for that outcome for his sake. As long as he doesn't end up with the Jets, Ravens or Colts, I'll be pulling for him to get back to his old level.

It would be really great if he can start playing well, whatever we can do to keep freenys defensive snaps to a minimum

To me Mayo seems to have shrunk in size ????

Mayo won't be around next year, there is no way they exercise his option and they'll save like 6-7 million in cap space by not exercising the option and could get a decent compensatory pick if another team nabs him. I guess its possible that they sign him back to the team at a vastly reduced contract though, but I have a feeling Rex Ryan or a team like the Colts will be all over him

He would definitely have to take a very large paycut. Even if he becomes good, he'd be the third linebacker in a 4-2 defense. And I severely doubt that he can become what he was before the patellar tendon injury.

I really hope he wants to stay with the Pats and takes a big paycut and becomes closer to his old self next season. That would be awesome! :)

I think BB Jr. takes the modest route and stays with the team on a pay cut. I don't see anyone else backing up the Brinks truck for him at this point after the time he has lost to injury and lengthy recovery.

Can't wait to see him knock the rust off this season and back in action next year. I could be very wrong with this being his swan song with us but I hope not.
