Report: Seahawks cut Super Bowl star WR Matthews - NFL.com

"There's no doubt Matthews showed enough against a great secondary to warrant a tryout somewhere else. Will he inevitably be the next great Patriots wideout?"

Chris Matthews, the 26-year-old wide receiver who seemingly appeared from nowhere in this past year's Super Bowl to catch four balls for 109 yards and a touchdown, was waived by the Seahawks on Tuesday, according to FOX Sports.

The undrafted free agent out of Kentucky, who also had stints in the Arena League and Canadian Football League, played in nine games this season, logging four catches for 54 yards. He was targeted nine times in all.

Because of Seattle's epic loss to the Patriots, the Matthews storyline suffered a bit, relegated to a sidebar amid one of the most chaotic endings in NFL history.

But if Seattle had won, Matthews would have been enjoying a Malcolm Butler-type moment. At the least, his absence from Seattle's offense would have raised more than a few eyebrows.

Instead, Matthews goes by the way of Malcolm Smith, another Seahawks Super Bowl hero who fizzled out the following season and wound up somewhere else.

There's no doubt Matthews showed enough against a great secondary to warrant a tryout somewhere else. Will he inevitably be the next great Patriots wideout?

Exactly why was he cut? ...... and what exactly is his injury ? ;)

He "showed a lot" against Kyle Arrington.

Having said that, it could be a decent pick up given our recent injuries.

So Matthews and Turbin are now FAs. These guys nearly cost us a SuperBowl.

Matthews for obvious reasons... But as for Turbin - I've always remembered that last drive of the first half where Seattle had just 29 seconds. Turbin ran it 20 yards on the very 1st play. If it wasn't for that I think Seattle would've taken a knee.

It took a year and a half before Amendola got on the same page as Brady and it took Lafell a half a season. How's a guy with 4 catches this season who just got cut gonna help at this point?

This.

Not only that, but he hadn't caught a pass ALL SEASON going into the Super Bowl (and if I'm not mistaken, was inactive for a bunch of games too). I know BB prepares for everything, but I highly doubt they spent much mental energy devising the best way to defend a bottom of the roster special teams player. Kudos to the Seahawks, it caught us by surprise and got them some big plays, but he didn't suddenly become a great wide receiver after that.

doesn't matter, he will be claimed long before the Pats can...But lets face it the Seahawks really dont have much of a passing game so the kid is getting a better deal more than likely.

Sounds awfully tempting but I would rather a capable*Third* Down RB at this point in time. I cannot see Matthews learning our PlayBook this late in the game.

I'd only do it if it meant bringing Harper to the 53 and putting this guy on the PS until he shows he knows the offense.

This: if he clears waivers.
