The best thing I can say about Butler 9 games in is he has continued to improve. As long as that improvement does not stop I have no complaints really.

Yesterday he played like a legit Starting #1 CB in the NFL no question. That can not even be debated IMO. I hope he can improve beyond this but if yesterday is the height of his skill and he can deliver that consistently then I am happy enough : )

Butler's awesome. Even when he's beat he's not burned. He's ****ing legit.

It continues to be one of my favorite storylines of this season that the super bowl hero can actually play corner. This isn't Larry Brown part 2. (Old guy reference)

I feel like we deserve Butler for the CB play pre Revis and busts.

Too bad it looks like Sanders will have a second string QB throwing to him. Or a badly wounded noodle armed starting QB. Either way will detract from the matchup, but I don't care.
The way Mannings season has been going whether or not it was the injuries fault, Osweiler might be an upgrade for Denver.

Butler is a Stud and he is only going to get better, damn if he was just 2 inches taller....
I have lived in the Washington area for 40 years and spent a number of them watching 5'9" Darrell Green play his way into the Hall of Fame. I have no problem with Malcolm's height.

Not only the in-game play and his improvements this season, but the swagger he has, the competitiveness. He didn't give ODB an inch yesterday, wasn't gonna back down for a second. He's not only bringing the game, but he's bringing the 'it' factor of a #1 CB.

Biggest test of the season since the matchup against Antonio Brown and he passed with flying colors. Besides the long TD, which was more on McCourty than anything, he shut Beckham down and made a monster play at the end of the game. The kid is LEGIT!

ESPN stats gave Butler 3 PD yesterday. I thought I counted 4 or maybe even 5.

Beckham had four catches. Even if ESPN is right and Butler only broke up three, knocking down 3 on a receiver who only caught 4 passes all night seems pretty good. Especially since I seem to recall at least one catch when the Pats were in zone and Butler wasn't responsible for Beckham.

ESPN statisticians are about as reliable as Iraqi Generals.

Looks like Bru is President of the Malcolm Butler Appreciation Society. Damn!

Bruschi said he no longer has any reservations about Butler and he’s turning into a “great corner.”

“Malcolm showed after that play the mentality that you need as a cornerback like that, it didn’t effect him the rest of the game,” Bruschi said. “There’s your short-term memory or whatever you want to call it. You forget it and move on to the next play, which all the best corners need to do. I’ve seen enough. I’ve really seen enough with Malcolm Butler — I have.

“I have no more reservations of what kind of player he is. I’d put him up against anyone in the league, in terms of receivers. He’s going to compete. He’s going to battle. He’s going to be there. He makes plays on the ball. Odell Beckham Jr. is probably one of the most competitive receivers. … Malcolm met his [competitiveness] play in and play out. In my opinion, won the game with the break up in he end zone knocking it out of his hands. I don’t need to see anymore of Malcolm Butler because I really think the Patriots have found something with him. He’s a great corner.”

How can anybody not be a fan of the kid? Went from working the window at Popeyes after he was kicked offf his juco team to winning the Super Bowl and backing it up by shutting down Odell Beckham Jr.

I'll admit, I love it because it's the quintessential subversive narrative. It flies in the face of conventional wisdom about a player's "ceiling" being something that can be determined before seeing what they actually do when given the chance. I'm sure Bruschi can relate to that.

Malcolm Butler is the 2010's version of Troy Brown.

this secondary with Darryl Roberts or Tarell Brown will be awesome.

Yep.....in 2016.

I wouldn't expect to see Brown back though.

I also want to give Ryan his props. Butler has been the focus this year but Ryan has done well too. I think you lock both up long term and look for 1 more guy. Both are young and I would like them both signed for 4 year contracts after this year.

Ryan has done very well as the #2 and I don't think you can call it a fluke at this point. Was good overall in year 1. Year 2 was kind of a lost year cause he was behind Revis/Browner/Arrington and later Butler... Never got much of a chance. Now in year 3 he has made the jump and has been consistent all year.

I would sign Butler to an extension for 5 years 25M ASAP. Ryan 4 years 17M ASAP.

Aside from Revis, Butler is the best corner we've had since 2006. The only other player close is Leigh Bodden that one year.

Nice post. I don't think Butler would take those contract numbers though. Probably $8MM per year is the least you get away with an extension like that. Also I don't think we can talk numbers with Butler at all until after his third season.

I thought they could after this year. I could be 100% wrong but UDFAs are generally signed up to 3 years and can renegotiate after the 2nd.

Well we will have room and I am hopeful :) We need some long term young decent CBs here. Have not had them in a while.

The Shutdown Club: Who are the NFL's best cornerbacks on an island?

Malcolm Butler, New England Patriots
Age: 25 | Experience: 2nd season

Butler's interception in Super Bowl XLIX will be replayed for decades given the game situation and the technique he showed on the play. Eyes, footwork, angle -- it was all perfect. The Patriots felt confident enough in Butler's ability to produce as a true No. 1 CB that they let the aforementioned Revis walk in free agency. Butler has rewarded their faith with his play this season. The guy can absolutely ball. Just go back to the tape from this past Sunday against the Giants'Odell Beckham Jr. Now, Butler didn't win every snap, but he sure did get up on Beckham and challenge him. Butler is physical at the line of scrimmage and he will use his hands instead of that lazy garbage we see all over the league with cornerbacks simply "opening the gate" at the snap (turn and run, no jam/reroute). It might be too soon for some to throw Butler on this list, but I'm doing it anyway because I've seen a positive developmental arc from him on tape -- and because you know he's going to battle all day.

Or Butler pulls a Dion Lewis and gives them a team friendly deal because they are the ones the took a chance on him
