The officiating

The officiating league wide has been especially terrible for the past four or so years now. It only seems to be getting worse as rules are getting more muddled. They're taking the physicality out of the game and that will inherently cause the officiating to be worse than ever. It's turning into the NBA.

On the Blount TD where Gronk was called for holding, I didn't really understand how that coulda been holding. They only replayed it once and very briefly, but it looked like Gronk pushed the defender and the defender fell backwards. Not sure how that was holding.

Wasn't it Andrews on the hold on that TD? Or was there another TD called back that I missed?

It was Andrews, and he basically tackled a pass rusher around one of his legs. A very disappointing, but correct, call.

One PI on Butler and one on Chung seemed very ticky-tack,

and it is always odd that you can get away with smacking a big TE like Chandler in the head after he goes for a catch, but you use half the force on a little WR and the yellow laundry flies in from all directions.

Well, according to Giants fans, somehow the refs gave US the game.

The games are rigged, of course. In this case the game was not rigged for the Giants to win, but to cover.

For all you pollyanna's who say the games are not rigged, how many millions were gambled on last night's game and how much are the refs paid?
Yup, just like the Ronda Rousey fight was rigged. She agreed to get knocked the **** out and get her lip split.

Look guys, I get it. We all think the NFL raped us twice, with the Kraft's accepting the punishment for deflategate (so some dislike for the Krafts). But to say the refs are in cohoots with the NFL in some scheme to beat the Pats, just makes us sound like Bill's fans and every other team's fans that see their team lose to the Pats. Bills fans were saying that they lost to the Pats AND the refs, that Goodell is in bed with Kraft (how ridiculous is that part ?).

Didn't the refs just have a major grievance with the NFL a couple of years ago ? They probably dislike Goodell as much as we do. Let's accept winning as graciously as we would losing. Refs make a lot of bad calls on both sides.

Giants strategy on 3rd downs was basically throw it up in the air and hope for a catch or PI.
Yes, that was a Joe Flacco strategy if I ever saw one, and it worked at least a few times.

it seems to me pats backs don't turn back for the ball like most other tyeam's backs do...that in itself leads to more flags. Yestersday was so frustrating watching pretty tight coverage at times, yet the lack of turning back for the ball.

The calls WERE bad on both teams. I remember one towards the end of the game when they called the Giants for illegal hands to the face, and when they showed the replay, it was the Pats player whose hands were in the face of the Giants player. I just figured it was a make-up call for one of the ridiculous calls on us. I was shocked when they overturned the Beckham non-TD, although when they show the replay in real time, it is a bang/bang play. What a relief that we got a break on that one.

It's was like that for years (except for last year), I guess the db coaches coach that way. Don't like it but can't complain about the results (6 SBs 4 SB wins, 8 AFC Championship games).

Yes, I was yelling at the TV, "Turn around! Turn around!" I don't know how many times. But, you still shouldn't get called when you don't turn around and you also don't touch the receiver!

The OPI on Gronk was one of the worst that I have ever seen. The LB initiated the contact.

The Butler PI call was horrible. I don't think he touched him at all.

Chung's was bad but I kinda see where the refs were coming from.

The Andrews holding call taking away the TD was about as obvious as it gets. Definite holding.

Butler PI was phantom. Melvin PI was a good call. Didn't get a good look on Chung PI.
The bigger point is that Flowers held Jones on 85% of the plays was only flagged once or twice. Can't let the Giants get away with holding every play and then call the Pats to take a TD off the board (it was definitely a hold though). I am amazed at the offense's proclivity for dumb penalties in the red zone.

Also, imagine if that Beckham play was called against Edelman or Gronk, and we lost that game. It would be the subject of 10 threads here at Patsfans. To be honest, thrilled with the result of that play and Butler's strip on that play, but how is that different then a RB diving, breaking the plain, and then the ball being knocked out of his hands, it ALWAYS results in a TD. Still happy with the reversal, but I can understand Giant's fans anger.

I agree. It's really very irritating. Other teams can rough him and abuse him and there's never any flags, but if he does anything that resembles roughing against some 5'9" DB, it's automatically a parade of yellow. They treat him like he's the Hulk playing football, like he's impervious to injury and unable to be stopped, but needs to be prevented from using his super abilities to harm anyone at all costs.

The little guy refs identify with the WRs more than the big guys. It's the same reason that linemen don't get the same protection against blocks below the waist from the competition committee that open-field players do.

I don't often accuse the officials of being in the bag, but it sure seemed like they were. Let's just say they were reffing as if they were VERY aware that Goodell was in the stands.

Did everything they could to help the Giants, and it still wasn't enough.

If they were in the bag, Hochuli would have ruled ODB's catch a TD. They are trying to do a difficult job while keeping up with elite athletes without even the benefit of regular practice.

It is different because the RB had possession of the ball in the end zone.

Hochuli's crew is usually not very good, those pi calls were God awful and I guess the league is just going to hack a gronk now

It was Andrews. The phantom holding call on Gronk occurred on another play.
