Doug Kyed on what he'd do with Garoppolo if the Pats plan to extend Brady

Some Patriot fans just drastically over-value our backup quarterbacks, always applying some ridiculously overinflated value to them and their abilities.

That was the case with Cassel, a group on this forum thought Mallet was actually worth a 1st rounder, they did it to some degree with Hoyer, and they're doing it again with JAG.

This is just the same delusional and flawed conversation we've been having since like 2008.

It's Ground Hogs day with the Brady backups.

Spoiler alert: Jimmy G is nothing special, he'll never win a Superbowl, and the Patriots without Tom don't win the AFC East, never mind playoff games. Some of you guys need to get freaking real. How many times do you have to have the backup quarterback conversation before you get it?

Tom isn't going anywhere.

lol
Spoiler alert: You're wrong. :)

Jimmy G wouldn't even start over Bortles on the perpetually awful Jaguars.

Just looking at the AFC, there's a whopping TWO teams that Jimmy G would start for right now: The Texans, because they're a complete basket case at QB, and the Browns, because they're a complete basket case at QB

That's two lousy teams who are in a state of complete dysfunction at the QB position.

If Jimmy G was the prospect some of you believe, he would have far more opportunities in the AFC as a starter, but that just wouldn't be the case.

He wouldn't start for any other teams in our ENTIRE conference with their current starting QB healthy. Just two.

I still want the #32 pick and would trade Garrapolo if they could get within a few picks of it, but not for less than that. The way Brady is taking care of himself and playing he will be great for some time to come and I would extend him for four to five years as soon as possible. Unless he's willing to wait another five to six years Garrapolo won't be the Patriots starter.

Yeah. I'm wrong. You were on this Jimmy G kick last year after Kansas City, calling me a Brady homer, and then we won the Superbowl. Please tell me more about the magical future hall of famer, Jimmy G, and all the Superbowls he's going to win even though he wouldn't start over anyone except Johnny Manziel and another bad Brady backup.

That's just a stupid thing to say.

He's almost certainly the 2d best QB in the AFC East behind Brady.

Jimmy G in the playoffs against a real defense would look about as capable as Tim Tebow in the 2011 Divisional Round. Jimmy G koolaid drinkers are as delusional as the Red Sox fans calling radio stations in 2008 wanting to trade Brady and keep Cassel, or the people who thought Mallet was worth a 1st lol.

Who would Jimmy G start for today in the AFC besides Cleveland and Houston?

Freaking nobody.

You clearly haven't watch anybody in the NFL except the Pats this year.

Without Tom we get swept by the Jets and probably the Bills. We split with Miami.

We instantly become the 3rd or 4th worst team in the division. Everyone in the AFC East knows this except for Patriot fans, apparently.

As far as the Conferences goes without Tom, just lol.

Brady will be getting extended.

I don't know. The Pats without Brady would be just like Miami, Jets and Bills - a good defense with a middling Quarterback so that would suggest parity IMO. Except the Pats got that whole Bill Belichick thing going for them.

You clearly haven't watched Jimmy G hold on to the ball forever not knowing what the hell he is doing against preseason 3rd stringer competition.

Tyrod Taylor, 2015 Fitzmagic and even Ryan Tannehill are all better at QB right now than Jimmy G, who looks suspect and lost even against preseason 3rd stringer Practice Squaders

We barely beat the Jets with Tom. Without him they beat our faces in. The Bills probably sweep us and maybe we split with Miami.

Yeah. That's how he completed 73 percent of his passes this past preseason all right!

He wouldn't start for anyone not named Houston or Cleveland.

Blake Bortles > Jimmy G.

Joe Flacco > Jimmy G

Andrew Luck > Jimmy G

Andy Dalton > Jimmy G

Ben Roethlisberger > Jimmy G

Marcus Mariota > Jimmy G.

Derek Carr > Jimmy G

Phillip Rivers > Jimmy G

Oh, maybe the Chiefs would throw us a 3rd for him… maybe.

He's a back up QB for basically everyone who isn't in a state of complete disaster at QB.

Pretending he is the heir apparent to the GOAT is delusional beyond words.

I'm afraid if Brady keeps playing like he is, then they may need to look at trading Garropolo sooner rather than later.

I hate doing it since I think he can be Brady's successor and the Pats could continue to win under him, but if Brady looks like he will be able to play well a few more years then they can't wait until Garropolo's last year.

He isn't Mallet and teams will want him. I would think they could get a #1 in 2017 easily.

We've got to be realistic...no one is giving a #1 pick for Garoppolo.

I've given the situation some thought and I wouldn't rule out BB moving past Brady even if he could get another two or three years from him. If BB thinks Garoppolo is the future would you trade away 10+ years of more winning if you were right for just two or three more?

Of course not. That's not good business?

If BB thinks Garoppolo is the future, that decision might get made.

We've got to be realistic...no one is giving a #1 pick for Garoppolo. He isn't mallet, but he's shown no more promise than Mallett had at this stage. We got a nice glimpse when he stepped in against KC of what he could do but that won't add to value.
Of course he's shown more promise. Mallet never showed ANY promise. This kid has shown nothing but promise. Lightening fast release, accurate thrower. I'm not saying he's TB or anything close, but I'm willing to bet that he'll be a starting QB in the NFL for a long while, barring injury. Time will tell.

I like the way you list 8 teams and pretend that's the whole of the league. Plus, he could easily play ahead of Bortles given a fair chance. Bortles is awful.

He could or should play ahead of Gabbert. McKown, Manziel, Kaepernick, Hoyer, Cassel. If Chicago had any sense, they'd grab him and dump Cutler.

What exactly did he do to piss you off? Sleep with your wife?

If im BB or Grap, I'd look at it sort of like this, Try and get a deal where I get paid right at the top of backup QB money(4-5 million a year) but with HEAVY incentives where If i have to play my contract goes up to middle tier starter money.

This does two things: for both the team and jimmy. 1.) for the team it keeps a good backup qb on the roster at a reasonable cost, and for jimmy he stays where hes confortable ina system he knows, and gets paid pretty well. and 2.) It gives both the team and jimmy the ability to transition right away into a starter, or if he were to get traded the team hes traded to, if he starts he wouldn't need to redo his contract.
