Obviously, no one knows exactly how things will turn out, but obviously sorting out the future of the QB position will be an important decision for t*he team. I won't ask you to say exactly how you think it'll turn out (you can say if you want, though).

But, in any case:
  • When do you think the Patriots will make a decision on extending Brady: this coming offseason, or sometime in 2017?
  • Let's assume they've already decided to extend Brady. Would it make more sense for them to keep Garoppolo until his contract runs out and then let him walk, or trade him earlier than that?

I think what would make most sense with Garoppolo is franchising him when his contract runs out. I think he'll have a lot of value.

Not sure when they'll make a decision on Brady. I don't think it's in anyone's best interest for there to be uncertainty, though.

If Brady plans to play beyond this contract, I'd see if O'Brien still likes him and try to get something like the Texans' #2 this year and next plus Hoyer. This year's #2 would be close to the stolen pick, next year's would get us back the #2 we spent on him and Hoyer would be a good backup. O'Brien may stick with Hoyer or draft his own guy in round one, though.

The 2015 QB franchise tag is over $18 million.

Unless I'm missing something, Doug Kyed has gone full ******.
I assume he means "franchise and trade", but I would do it earlier than that (have to have cap space to franchise before trade).

I'm afraid if Brady keeps playing like he is, then they may need to look at trading Garropolo sooner rather than later.

I hate doing it since I think he can be Brady's successor and the Pats could continue to win under him, but if Brady looks like he will be able to play well a few more years then they can't wait until Garropolo's last year.

He isn't Mallet and teams will want him. I would think they could get a #1 in 2017 easily.

Just let him walk when his contract expires and draft a new back up for the GOAT.

Nothing has changed. Same formula for how we handled Hoyer and Cassel and Mallet.

One unknown is if Josh gets HC job this off-season and if he likes JG enough to want to take him with him. That would be a huge start with his new team to have a young QB who already knows the offense.

One way to get back NYJFL is to get the first pick in the second round. If
we repeat will get what essentially is the 33rd pick.

If there's a trade market for a four-year backup who hasn't proven anything making $18M, then sure, you could franchise and trade him. In the far more likely (IMO) event that nobody's willing to pay that kind of money to him, you just let him walk.

If Brady is still playing like this 2 years from now you trade Garo for a conditional pick. The better her proformers the better the pick. Maybe he can get you a first rounder.

Brady has the potential to get you to the SB so you do whatever you have to do until Brady shows he can no longer get you there.

This is definitely the year to draft a QB after the 1st round. There are a ton of QBs coming out of college this year. If I were a team desperate for a QB, I would just draft 3 guys in the 4th through 6th round, and let them compete.

Cardale Jones rJr Ohio State QB
Carson Wentz Sr North Dakota State QB
Cody Kessler rSr Southern California QB
Connor Cook rSr Michigan State QB
Dak Prescott rSr Mississippi State QB
Gunner Kiel rJr Cincinnati QB
Jared Goff Jr California QB
Joshua Dobbs Jr Tennessee QB
Nate Sudfeld Sr Indiana QB
Paxton Lynch rJr Memphis QB
Christian Hackenberg Jr Penn State QB

These are just 11 who will be available.

Goff and maybe Lynch in the 1st round. Connor Cook in the second. Then Kiel and maybe Dobbs in the 3rd. Possibly also Cardale Jones although he may be dropping with the QB rotation at Ohio State. Prescott, Wentz and Sudfeld in the 4th and 5th, with Hackenberg and Kessler in the 5th and 6th.

patriots traded mallett to the texans at the end of training camp last year.

I agree with you that Kyed has lost his mind, and that's your main point, but I just have to point out how queasy I get seeing someone type or say that word these days. While you're definitely not the kind of person who would do anything malicious, there are some here on our forum who have children or family members that God handed some extra obstacles to, and those people have my full admiration (and more guts than I could ever show).

Not meaning to nitpick, so full apologies. I've certainly used it myself plenty of times, as well as other words that I'm ashamed of and would like to take back. I would just love to see a world where we begin to stray away from using those words, that's all. Maybe it will catch on and others may think twice in the future by breaking the habit? Sorry again for putting your comment on blast @oldrover.

We're also making the same assumption that's been made many times in the past, in terms of thinking that we have backup QBs who are worth a lot. I would think that Garappolo may fit into that category more than some others (cough, cough, Mallett), but franchise tag and trade? I dunno....

We'd probably have to see a bit more of Garoppolo to help showcase his talents in order to receive a higher round draft pick. I think it's a bit early to be worrying about a Brady extension at this point.

And for that matter, they released Hoyer at cutdowns instead of paying him the RFA tender.

Kudos for your list and I agree with your approach of taking a QB in the draft or even doubling down at the position in the mid rounds.

As an OSU fan though, I'd be completely shocked to see someone take Cardale Jones in the 3rd round, even if that's where they gave him his "rough" draft projection before the season started. I think he's much closer to a guy like Troy Smith, who actually won the Heisman but still never showed anything in the NFL. Jones is far from a running QB, and maybe even farther from an accurate passer. He's got a strong arm, and took advantage of the skills of WR Devin Smith during last year's championship run, but I think that's where it ends.

Since the draft class looks a bit weak to me, at least at the moment, it will be interesting to see how overdrafted some of these guys will be, and what teams are willing to take such chances.
