UPDATE: Dion Lewis has been IR'd with torn ACL, and will be out for the season

Well if there's any good news out of this, if there's any position that we can afford to lose due to our history of having successful guys come and go, it's the receiving back position.

Dion sure has been one of a kind though.

Well, if not "next man up" then what? "throw in the towel?"

Players need to step up. You never know who might be waiting to make an impact. That's part of why the season is so dramatic.

Does this suck? Yes. But any whining because injuries might have cost us two more Superbowls in addition to our 4 is just a tad obnoxious. Get a grip.

I would like see the teams' offensive production with their first choice "3d down back" and without - that means production in games in which Kevin Faulk, then Danny Woodhead, then Shane Vereen were out injured and their backup played...I could be wrong, but I bet the difference is staggering....

We've seen this current team's offensive production without Lewis (albeit in just a single game) vs the Jets and they did very well. They put up 30 points against the #1 ranked defense at the time.

I feel like injuries are always our biggest obstacle in winning the SB.

I still think we beat the Giants with healthy Gronk
Agree 100%, a healthy Gronk is virtually unstoppable, and even if you stop him, leaves others open. I think they win the second SB against the Giants with Gronk even at 70%.

Heard Welker still wants to play. Give him #39, put him in at RB, and it'll be like Woodhead never left

How did "next man up" work in 2013? How did "next man up" work in 2012? If the ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl, then "next man up" is a crock. If the ultimate goal is to win a division round game, then cool, it works.

Um, have you been paying attention to the offensive line this year?

Hard to take any solace in this loss. The Pats lose a fine player and good teammate.

I guess we have something to look forward to next year. The return.

It's better to have knee surgery when you are young as opposed to old. In many cases the body naturally has the ability to heal faster. Who knows? Maybe there was a slight micro tear and it was just ready? Still, whatever, it sucks losing this guy. He was so fun to watch.

The offense has looked very pedestrian without Lewis. 13 points without him yesterday vs a pretty average Washington D, and vs the NYJ without Lewis the offense sucked until the last two drives.

Lewis got injured with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. They had only 2 drives after that. 1 was a 90 yard TD drive and the other was a 10 play 5 minute 30 second drive that that ended after LaFell got illegal contacted and there was no call and then Brady dumped it off to Bolden for a few yards and then they punted from the Washington 35.

They put 30 points up on the jets. Their season average is 34.5. To say the offense sucked is laughable.

.

To be fair, they had 13 points without him AND with an OL that, shall we say, was less than optimal. Brady was trying to get the ball out in less than one second rather than the 2 he's been averaging. I think that had more to do with it frankly.

Oh that really sucks. I was really hoping for just a strain. I hope he makes a speedy recovery in the offseason. He will be missed.

seeing ray rice's name floating around twitter..

the circus would be in town if we signed that jerk.

Yea fuuuuhuhuhuuuck that noise. There's gotta be some good RB the Jets have released this year. Anyone?

I would support bringing in Rice if he was still good. Problem is, he didn't look very good in his final year in Baltimore.

Like a loser:rolleyes::( I went & did some of the math for games without a starting third down back, in this case my study was the 2013 season in which the Pats lost Shane Vereen for 8 games. In games Vereen played the Patriots averaged 29.2 ppg and in the games he missed they averaged 26.3, so field goal difference.
As I like to do when I work with stats like this, I like to adjust for outliers - in this case I discarded the high & low score of each test group (a 55 point outburst vs Pit, a 6 point egg vs Cin, a 16 point yuck vs Den & a 43 point performance vs Ind) and we have the pats scoring 29.1 with Vereen and 25.0 without him.
So there's a bit of insight into the effect the loss of Lewis may have on the offense...

How many of those games were with/without Gronk?

It doesn't look like you took other variables into account.

With a sample size of 8, I don't understand why you'd think it's wise to discard 25% of the numbers? They aren't "outliers" when there's only 8 games.

They put 30 points up on the jets. Their season average is 34.5. To say the offense sucked is laughable.

And the four point discrepancy is completely accounted for by a single Edelman drop.

It wasn't easy, but the other guys get paid, too.
