Article here: Former NFL official rips Roger Goodell, instant replay

Money quote here:

“A few very visible errors in recent weeks has rightfully put NFL officiating in the public spotlight,” Scott Green, a former NFL official for 23 years, wrote for USA Today.

“The League is predictably handling the issue no differently than the others that characterize Commissioner Roger Goodell’s regime: arbitrary punishment of an individual for a fast public relations fix,” Green wrote. “It’s a reactive approach that may give some short-term satisfaction to one team’s fans, but it doesn’t address improvement.”

I for one am shocked that Goodell would act arbitrarily in the name of prioritizing PR over 'getting it right'. And given how Green phrased his critique, I think there's a clear, implicit criticism of how Deflategate was handled in there as well.

Well to be frank, I'm shocked and in disbelief.

Must be something about Goody turning his wrath on the refs that's got this guy stirred up.

When Goodell came for the Patriots, I remained silent. I was not a Patriot.
When Goodell came for the Saints, I remained silent. I ws not a Saint.
When Goodell came for the Ravens, I remained silent. Iwas not a Raven.
When Goodell came for the Patriots again, I remained silent. I was still not a Patriot.
When Goodell came for me...

Doesn't RG have an extensive background in PR? So no surprises there in his this smear campaign.

awesome.

The owners have an incredible tolerance--if not appetite--for Goodell's sophomoric managment of the league. Any ability to think rationally and admit an error was apparently drowned in the sea of Benjamins they threw at him.

The most incredible part of this article is that the head of officiating, the dude making the replay calls in the Command Center in NY, HAS NEVER OFFICIATED AN NFL GAME!!!!

This is astounding. What kind of lunatic a would hire a guy who's never been on the NFL gridiron to oversee the most critical aspect of officiating a game? Oh wait, easy answer, Roger Goodell. Ugh. No wonder so many replays come up with the wrong answer or wimp out under the non-conclusive bull.

I don't really buy "he's made a lot of money for the owners" slant. Koko the gorilla could sign thousands of words. Pretty sure if she'd been selected commish instead of RG, the league would still be rolling in $$$.

Well, let's hope this is a one time thing for Roger.

She'd actually **** things up a lot less...

Yeah, I agree with you, the league would've made money without him. He got lucky with the Brady's, Manning's etc that pushed the NYFL into the spotlight. Not to discredit his stupidity that made the headlines as well.
