Kaepernick BENCHED for... Gabbert.

Can't believe how far that team has fallen. He came within a few yards of winning the Super Bowl and went back to the NFCCG the next year. 4-2 in the playoffs.

I hope this shows just how HARD it is to play QB in this league. Think about it. Both Kapernick and RGIII have had remarkable success when placed in certain situations, but for just brief times.

First it tells you that what system you play in matters. Griffin couldn't function in Gruden's system. Kapernick couldn't grow past the athletic QB we saw those 2 great seasons. Who knows if Brady had been forced to play in a system that didn't value what he COULD do at the start. Who knows what Brady would have been like if he hadn't decided it was important to improve some aspect of his game EVERY year. He never rested on his laurels. Did he have have the mobility to run the west coast offense in SF. (he might have it now ;) ).

I hope Garapolo knows just how lucky he was that he wasn't drafted in the first round and forced to start for some team long before he was ready (and I don't think he's ready now) Which leads to the second factor in QB success. Too many of them have to play right away. I understand why, given the huge investment teams make in the top picks. But too few are ready, and if they are put in the wrong environment it could ruin them.

David Carr insists to this day that his brother was a far better QB that he was coming out of college. But he just got physically beaten up when he reached the pros and it ruined him. The point is you not only have to be good, you have to be lucky in being put into the right system.

I wonder if part of the problem Andrew Luck is having now can be linked to the number of hits that kid has taken the last 4 years. IIRC I heard a stat that he's been the hit the most of any QB over the last 3 season coming into this one. Is it any wonder he's regressed some.

The luck of the draw goes for position players as well. Patrick Chung playing predominantly in a tampa 2 was cut by 2 teams. Patrick Chung being used like has been in his 2nd stint with the Pats is a key contributor. Think about it. Ninko couldn't make 2 teams as a LB or Long snapper. It was by luck that he came here, put into positions were he could succeed and grow, and VOILA, we have one of more effective all round DE's in the league. Right place, Right time. It matters.

For Blaine Gabbert

Oh how the mighty have fallen....

Kaep, Tebow and Wilson are going to change the NFL forever with the read option. It's here to stay. The days of the drop back pocket passer are numbered.

Sincerely,
The Wildcat

I thought Gabbert had the makings of a top 10 qb of a nfl star when he was drafted.

Seems like there's a lot of QB's anymore who fall quickly. RGIII goes from rookie of the year to third string QB, Josh Freeman we saw fall off in Tampa. One has to wonder if Luck will suffer the same fate although it's very doubtful

to be fair Gabbert had absolutely nothing to work with in Jville. I mean hes not the answer but they have to do something. The WRs are pathetic. Boldin is there best guy and he is like 50.

First RGIII....now Kap??? Boy, have the mighty fallen

Question (to anyone): Isn't the idea of a running quarterback predicated on expecting lots of failed plays where you need the QB to make lemonade out of lemons after all of the passing options fail?

It's like the career arc of Vick except without all the dead dogs.

It seems like a defeatist strategy from the get go. I would think a system where you plan and work towards successful plays would be more productive.

Gabbert is afraid of contact. Big negative.

This is partly about Kaepernick's performance but more about his cap hit

They actually signed him to a pretty smart contract - $12 mil guaranteed but any of the salary guarantees are year by year if he's on the roster

If he were good it was a fair deal for both the team and Kap

If he played as he has been then they can cut him after this season with really no cap consequence

Salaries ARE guaranteed in case of injury - so THAT'S why he's now going to sit in a very thick layer of bubble wrap

They're not going to contend with him or Gabbert - right now the priority is to get out of his contract - and they do that by having him avoid injury (i.e. - don't play him!!!)

A mobile QB who can throw well - and even better if they can throw well on the move - is a very good thing

I think with most running QBs you see they're successful in college but lack the throwing skills and smarts needed in the NFL and subsequently fail

But mobility is a plus - Tom Brady will attest to that and he's worked on his mobility in the offseason - and that's been a pretty big plus given a patchwork OL

Granted Brady's mobility has more to do with moving around the pocket and buying more time as opposed to rivaling the RBs - but as good as Brady's pocket presence always has been he's actually BETTER and more mobile in the pocket now than ever before (yes Haters - Brady is getting BETTER!)

Remember that NFL commercial featuring all these new QBs playing that Imagine Dragons song "Radioactive"?

"Welcome to the new age, to the new age….."

Heh. Not so fast.

I was thinking about this yesterday and I thought I remember ed some analyst saying that Colin Kaepernick could be the greatest QB ever and lo and behold, I found the article. ESPN, of course.

Jaworski: Kaepernick could be one of best

Hilarious. Anyone who actually thinks they are getting insight from these fools is delusional.

At least we don't have to see that douche wear those stupid headphones during the post-game press conference.

This should also be labeled "OT".

That is what baffles me. Kaepernick scored a 38 on the Wonderlic (Brady scored a 33), so it's not a matter of IQ.

Could it be that he's just not putting in the extra work? Not putting in any homework?

I have a hard time accepting that his failure to read what the defense shows is the result of some sort of intellectual deficiency on his part.
