OT: Schefter - Denver Trades for Vernon Davis

Calm down.

You can have confidence in your team and at the same time admire the Broncos trade for a still decent TE who is an excellent blocker (which helps their shaky LT situation) by giving up only a 6th rounder in 2017.

No one is "cowering".

DEN could use a better option at tackle, but it certainly isn't a necessity. We've got our own issues at the outside tackle positions on the OL, which I'm sure they're talking about right now on their forum just the same :D

This is not a cheerleading convention. It's a sports forum.

There's a 99 percent statistical probability that you're mistaken, but don't worry--it's occurring in meaningless "garbage time" of our discussion, so it doesn't really matter.

Before someone gets their panties in a bunch, I'm only joking around.

Broncos become responsible for 9/17ths of Vernon Davis's 4.35m salary or $2,302,941 and 9 $25,000 46-man active roster bonus.

This move is probably overrated but still good by Denver. Maybe there will be a few other interesting trades but doubtful

This trade can't be anything bad for Denver (just doesn't fix the aging QB arm issue) as it is incredibly cheap trade (essentially only a 2017 6th, while they might get a 5-7th comp pick as makeup if he goes in FA next year) and adds another big target for the short game (which by dec may be all Pay-me has left); however, ....

There is one thing that might be bad for Denver. Supposedly Davis was the ringleader of the inside-locker room argument/mutiny to bench Kapernik. It is interesting that immediately after trading Davis SF announces they are sitting Kap in favor of Gabbert. That doesn't seem to match with doing the trade, but maybe both decisions made in isolation and Kap is really bad this year. IF IS TRUE that they traded him to get rid of a bad presence, what are the chances he stirs up sh*t when he gets lit up by a defender after a slow arriving pay-me floater?

I can but hope (sorry no collegial best wishes to Denver even if it is payme's last lap) ;)

Meh, what can you do?

Our TE is better.

Actually, IIRC, the most they can get for him is a 5th b/c he's been in the league for 10 years.
I'm usually pretty informed about these things (i.e. comp picks), but that I did not know ct.

Everydays a school day. :)

Well, technically one could choose to start a thread about how they "can't take it anymore," but it wouldn't really change much.

The bottom line is that it was a low risk move, (particularly since they'll recoup the low round picks via compensatory selections) that gives them another viable target.

If Brees can rejuvenate Ben Watson, it's certainly possible that Davis can help out in some capacity as well.

Yeah, I wasn't aware of that either. Kudos to @ctpatsfan77 for keeping us on top of things, as usual.

VD's recent history:
Unproductive
Slowed down
Injury prone

VD's Broncos future:
Will be hearing footsteps as flutter ball approaches / preparing for contact before ball arrives.
Survival mode

See WW for references.

This can't be considered anything but a good move by the Broncos. They have the cap space and they have the need. The last 2 years have been horrible in SF. So has Davis. But for most of his career, Davis has been an elite TE, both blocking and receiving.

While we all HOPE that he's slowed down, developed alligator arms, and has become disinterested, we can't ignore the possibility that the chance to move to an undefeated team and go to a superbowl could revive that talent. At best (for us) he's an upgrade at TE. At worst, the Broncos added a really talented option for Manning, and another big challenge to our defense. There is no downside for them with this trade.

Davis is a primadonna TE/WR. Hope he causes some locker room issues there.

To be fair, it took Watson years and years in the Saints offensive system before he started to perform at the level he's at now. I don't know what kind of a study Vernon Davis is, but I know Ben Watson was known for his smarts and high football IQ

Also, Brees is not in decline like Manning clearly is.

Yeah, even if you have a low opinion of Davis, he's still better than what they had, and it's not like they were hard up for cap space. This trade improved the Broncos, without any significant cost (opportunity or otherwise). We can quibble over how much it improved them, but that's really all there is to debate here.

This. There's no real reason to **** on Vernon Davis. He's fine and better than what the Broncos had, and they got him for virtually nothing. Good for them. It helps their team.

No one's saying Vernon Davis is Rob Gronkowski. At least, I hope they're not.

He's only been there a couple of years prior to 2015, so not sure where the "years and years" comes into things? He was stuck behind Jimmy Graham.

My, what a difference one good week vs. the NYG 29th ranked pass defense makes. Most have noticed the obvious decline of Drew Brees.

His shoulder looked as if it wasn't bothering him as much this week, allowing his throwing motion to be more normal. That seems to have made a huge difference.

He's thrown for almost 20 INTs in the past 2/3 years, along with leading his team to a 7-9 record in the past 2/3 years.

I don't think it's fair to claim that one has seen a downward spiral, while the other hasn't. They are still good QBs who are battling father time. At the moment it appears as though Brees is holding up better.

Great point about the shoulder injury though. He does seem to be playing better lately.
