They needed to do something and unfortunately for them all they have is Gabbert

But why not wait until their bye week in week 10?

Niners bench Colin Kaepernick; Blaine Gabbert to start - NFL.com

I get Colin has played horrible but that sure isn't much better!

The idea for San Francisco now, is to not win games. Blaine Gabbert gives them the best chance to do that.

Then they can get a top-3 pick, either trade Kaepernick if they can get a QB, or keep him if they can't, have a "QB Competition" in training camp with Kaepernick pre-determined to win, and the 49ers reset next year.

One thing's for sure though, it's tankin' time.

losong games is not good for any coach's career opportunity the following year. Nor is giving up plays for the players.

Tomsula was hired to be a placeholder anyway, after all the rats jumped ship when Harbaugh left. He'll keep his job, or a job, with the team, so long as he plays the good soldier.

Are you implying that the 49ers aren't trying to tank, and think the best way to improve their team this year is to bench their starting QB and trade their #1 TE?

It's almost irrelevant who is behind Kap. The Niners are currently almost incapable of sustaining a TD drive if it requires passing against even significantly below average coverage. Plainly put their passing offense is by quite a bit the worst passing offense in the NFL. It may be the worst I have seen in recent memory. And the effect is defenses are crowding the line making any run game production twice as hard.

Given that reality you can either (A) stay the course and hope the clearly worst passing offense in the league will get better, (B) bench many/all the receivers and many/all the OL to try something different/the unknown, (C) bench the QB and try something different/the unknown.

C is the only viable course. They have to see if the backup, even if it is Gabbert, can be productive in the passing game with the receivers and OL that is in place/the Niners are stuck with. And if he stinks badly guess what happens?? Nothing. The Niners are already suck so bad on offense that even an epic fail by Gabbert will mean almost no difference (when you are scoring about 6 points a game there really isn't anywhere but up).

In an evening national game featuring the Niners a few weeks ago, I posted here the HC needed to bench Kap at the start of the second half. IMHO it was clear their passing offense was appallingly ineffective with Kap (including previous games too). And while it may not be all his fault or even significantly Kap's fault, as the HC you should not watch week after week after week of passing offense that is well below every other team in the league without making an executive decision to try something different. In other words the HC's decision is quite late...

The Niners may want to lose to get some sort of lock on a draft pick, I really don't know. However, Gabbert does not give them the best chance to do that. At worst Gabbert will only give them an equal chance to do that.
The Niners have scored 109 points this season. The next closest are 125, 130, 133. Yea, the Niners have played 8 games while the other lowest 3 have played only 7. The Niners are currently a big outlier on offense.
5 of SF's 8 offensive points production: 3, 6, 3, 7, 18.
The Niners scored 20 in a game against Minn where Kap had 160 yards passing, an average around 5.5, and the lead RB had more rushing yards than kap passing.
The Niners scored 25 against the Ravens. Kap's passing highlights: a heave-ho TD pass for 80 yards, a 13 yard drive resulting in a FG (excellent starting position), a 20 yard drive resulting in a FG (excellent starting position), a 30 yard drive resulting in 54 yard FG (excellent starting position).
**I hate to take away from one of his few good moments against the Ravens but it is what it is. And to be fair he did have 2 good drives in that game for 10 points. But remember everyone is stacking the line and daring him/giving Kap extra room to throw.

I lived in the Bay Area for many years and still like, for some reason, to watch the Niners. I just cannot remember watching an offense as painful to watch as what it has been this year. The Niners need to try something, anything if they want to win games. Again it may not be all Kap's fault but there is almost literally no where to go but up.

It was hilarious when Kap posted some pictures on twitter doing bicep curls or some other ******ed exercise. Then some random dude pointed out that instead of lifting weights he should be studying and Kap actually responded all butthurt. I guess the random dude was right. Kap is clueless out there.

So Jordan Devey hasn't fixed their offensive woes?

First RGIII....now Kap??? Boy, have the mighty fallen

a humbling experience for him......I'd hate to see him rededicate himself, and wind up with the jets.....the dude has some mad skills

Looks like they're looking to tank the season at this point and get a good draft pick.

I would say that keeping Kap in as the starter is tanking the season

It only takes a couple seconds to look around before the snap.

I live in Jacksonville. Wait until you get a load of Blaine Gabbert.
