Random Patriots/NFL Thoughts That Don't Warrant A New Thread

If you're rating them there (and I assume you are) I'd put Lewis above Woodhead. Danny was great, but Lewis makes people miss more consistently and displays more power than Danny did.
I hear you. I put Woody over Lewis because he has had a very productive NFL career and Lewis has not- yet.

Lol I love how they're complaining about Dean Pees playing too soft and then BAM! Double pass Deep throw Touchdown! Oh their agony taste so sweet!:D
Yea. PRESS EM!! Oh oops. Guess that's why they didn't press em.

For 1 game give me Lewis right now if healthy. For 1 play or 1 career give me Faulk (so far for career). Some guys just have an ability to get a first down. Faulk so so good at it. Good list though and i can see why you ranked them that way.

Random thoughts.

#1 Chandler Jones is on pace to have the best season of his career... and no one has mentioned it cause Sheard has been more impressive by a bit but it seems the case health permitting. At 6.5 sacks he is tied with the league lead.

#2 Malcom Brown was in that silly story 3 weeks into the year of rookies who look like a bust. He has improved every single game so far and right now looks pretty good. If you did that story again he certainly would not be included.

#3 Dom Easley has played well this year but only has .5 Sacks. Just goes to show sacks aren't everything. For such a disruptive presence his sacks numbers have been low since college. Interesting.

#4 Gostkowski is 39/39 on the year (counting XPs and FGs). There are 5 other perfect kickers but no one has more total attempts. Next best are the Seattle kicker 30/30 and Cleveland kicker 25/25 and of all perfect kickers Gost's 57 FG is the longest make.

#5 Aaron Rodgers is having a great year but that offense has scored 27.3 PPGs. Nothing to thumb your nose at but for as good as he has been you would think their offense would be closer to the Patriots which is 35.5 PPGs. Arizona is still silently the 2nd best Offense in the NFL at 32.7 PPGs. (this may be off a bit as PPG counts defensive and STs points which the Pats have yet to score any of btw (no punt/kick returns or fumble-6 pick-6 yet.

#6 Jamie Collins does it all. We talk about his big plays which of course makes but (partly due to missing Hightower) he also leads the team in tackles. So he makes the small but important plays too with 49 total tackles.

#7 The Patriots have caught some breaks but are alone at the top with only 3 Give aways this year. GB is 2nd with 4. Next best team has 6.

That will do for now : )

Hmmm. Tough one.

I think if it was a game I had to have I still might go with KF.

Who'd have thought the Jets would be a well-coached, disciplined team and that the Dolphins would be executing efficiently and playing with passion? I saw some of their London game with a Dolphins fan and I was embarrassed for him, even though I don't like his team one tiny bit.

So it gives BB a problem with the team being banged up -- but perhaps a problem he's happy to have. The most important point of last season -- well, before the last quarter of the Super Bowl -- was the second half of the Chiefs game. That was when (BB said) he discovered that he had a team that would fight no matter what.

The Jets game wasn't beautiful, but BB was really pleased with the players afterwards -- kept saying how proud of them he was. Certainly, with all of the injuries there was plenty of adversity there. And it will probably be the same this evening.

I'm more confident than I was last weekend. But it will be tough -- for the O-line, for the DEs and for the secondary in particular. Will BB be praising the team's "ironmen" again? I surely hope so.

It is clear, at least to me, that Bill really likes coaching this team. Bellichick only wants his team to play hard, prepare thoroughly, and improve over time. So while the execution hasn't be perfect, by far, this team is giving him great effort so far, and looks to be improving.

I think the only thing I bet he wishes he can see before the playoffs, is how this team bounces back from some severe adversity. Unfortunately that would mean seeing how they'd bounce back from a defeat or 2...and that might not happen.

Yes, that's my point.

I've thought about that. I think this season could be like 2010 in some ways. That season, the Pats pretty much beat all the playoff-caliber teams they faced, and they faced a lot. Come the playoffs, they have two issues; I think fatigue was one, and the lack of adversity.

I think this team is stronger mentally, but time will tell. Like the 2014 team, I'm really liking this team. I don't truly feel it's hopeless with them, no matter the game situation. Hell, a lot of these guys (most of them) battled through two big deficits on the biggest stages last year. This is a battle tested team.

Yeah, I'm still swilling on the kool-aid.

I agree, but want to see a full season.

I loved how Danny came in here and picked up the offense very quickly.

What would it take for certain fans to stop whining about wins and too many safties

One thing that I always think about, but never thought it warranted its own thread is if you spell Tom Brady's name backwards, it is Ydarb Mot which would be a great name for a Star Wars character. If you think long enough about it, it will blow your mind.

Whew! It was great to get that one off my chest.

Ydarb Mot.

GOAT Star Wars character confirmed.

I wonder is players do the same to kickers when theyre on a roll like Gost as baseball players do for pitchers when they're close to a no hitter.

I think it's quite similar in the sense that they don't talk to the kicker or approach him on the sidelines, knowing that a big FG attempt is coming up.

Not sure about continuously avoiding him for weeks or months during a streak like Gost's. That would seem awfully over the top.

We've had a couple of 17-2 seasons before, as well as an 18-1 season, so I think it's way too early to assume that things won't be quite similar with thoughts of zero losses.

I would bet anything that someone as experienced and intelligent as yourself would agree that 7 weeks a season does not make. We have plenty of opportunity to see how they'll respond to a loss or two, which will likely include injury situations (past, current, and future) and other obstacles to overcome.

If not, Belichick will come up with something, as well as the adversity of overcoming all opponents on the schedule! Not to worry, Ken :)

Speaking of both Drew Brees and archery, this video that tries to see who is more accurate - Brees or an Olympic archer both aiming at a 5 inch target at 20 yards - is a lot of fun:

This is the most ridiculous thing I think I have ever seen. I love sports science and can not get enough of it. Thanks for posting

Here's another random thought:
During the attempted on-sides kick against the Jets, the Patriots' "hands" team had three offensive players (11, 80 and 87) and eight defensive players.

Agreed - what amazed me was Brees' consistency in terms of velocity, angle of release, rotation of the ball and degree of wobble. I also had no idea that you actually want a small amount of wobble for optimal accuracy.

Hitting a 4.8-inch target from 20yd away ten out of ten times is pretty impressive.

Random thought: Is it just me, or is every time there's a shot of Edelman up close, he appears to be squinting? I seriously wonder if he needs contacts. Not criticizing his play, I just noticed the frequent squinting.
