Former Pats QB Ryan Mallett misses team flight to game

As I was reading this, I was also matching some earlier- in the season -statements about his not being the starting QB. In fact, before I learned that he missed his flight, I wondered if the relationship has soured; if it might take a bad turn.

His reputation was suspect at best when he entered the draft. I am surprised we spent such a high pick on him. Sadly, he was at his best when he stayed out of headlines and carried a clipboard.

Tiffani Thiessen > Mallet.

Why did anybody ever think this guy was going to be something in the NFL.

He's got a big time hitch in his throw.

This just in: Mallet has blamed "bad traffic" for missing his flight.

The only way you can blame traffic for something like this is if it's him driving on a bridge, and both the start and end of the bridge collapses so he is stuck there and has to save babies from falling down from the bridge, and for him to then be airlifted by helicopter from the bridge. Unless that happens you simply can't blame traffic.

It's like when I played and someone was late and blamed the train or bus. Well, maybe you should have prepared for the bus or train being late, and taken an earlier one so it can be late without it being a problem. It's still your fault for not preparing. Same with Mallett

He ran a pro style offense at Arkansas, and had a big arm. The Pats felt that he provided good value since he slipped all the way down to the 3rd round. That's about it.

It was more than obvious that Mallett wasn't going to be anything after his 2nd TC/summer/preseason here, when he showed absolutely no progress whatsoever. Of course, they gave him the benefit of the doubt and kept him one more year since he knew the system, but his 3rd preseason may have been even worse than his 2nd.

Now are we sure they didn't intentionally try to get him to miss the flight?

If his excuse is traffic, weather, whatever, the rest of the team had to deal with the same circumstances and they managed to make the flight. That is weak, really weak.

If I was paid a million dollars a year, I'd make sure I'm always an hour early.

A million dollars a year, and you missed a practice earlier in the year due to "oversleeping" (after losing the starting quarterback competition)? If I was in that circumstance, I would be sleeping in an airport hotel filled with alarm clocks and be at the terminal several hours early just to show the coach how I learned from the previous mistake. Especially as a quarterback that is supposed to be the leader of the team.

One time could be an aberration. Two is a pattern. Quarterbacks, are supposed to be the leader of the team, and set an example. O'Brien is a BB disciple. I think he will set his own example by cutting Mallett.

I'm not entirely sure that they are in a good enough situation with their QBs to cut him, but you are right. He's probably just guaranteed himself a spot on the bench and a worse reputation moving forward.

That's a shame, since he most likely would've had another starting shot at some point this year.

So surprisingly, the 7th round pick the Pats got for Mallett has a decent chance of having a better NFL* career.

It really doesn't. Mallet could stop pouting and backup somewhere for 5 more years

Pointless beating around the bush. Leopards don't change their spots and Mallett is proving his unprofessional college attitude has followed him into the pros. That's a shame given he has a cannon. Fortunately, 99% of everything is between the ears and our signal caller sets the bar ridiculously high when considering preparation.

Wow. Stuff like this makes you appreciate how lucky we are to have Belichick and Kraft

Pretty sure I heard that BB the GM was undermining the coach.

Not sure if you were trying to be funny or not....but yeah, that can happen as well. Just look at Chip Kelly for example

O'Brien is done there after this year. Rick Smith vetoing the decision to cut a guy that has acted like baby is a Smith power demonstration. Basically telling O'Brien "You traded for him, deal with it"
